Any fans of Orbiter (spaceflight simulator) around here?

Can you enter the gas giant atmospheres?

I've seen videos in which ships were aerobraking in Jupiter's atmosphere, so I think it's possible.

EDIT: Here's one video in which aerocapture at Jupiter was used (3:20):

Link to video.

If you don't have a ship with advanced functions (like monitoring the external pressure and temperature), you can even land on Venus. You won't get back though

This game would be so much easier if it actually told you the controls?

I mean, I found the Help section and it didn't say anything. Hmm. A bit odd, but OK.

I go to the website, there's a FAQ, this sounds promising, oh wait, NOTHING THERE EITHER. EDIT: except under 'how do I start' which is rather ambiguous wording imho

My spacecraft remains grounded on the runway due to the horrendous 'training' my cosmonauts received.

Edit2: I got it running. I tried to turn 140* in East like they told me to, but there was apparently no compass or similar device to tell me when I was at 140*; I remain angry at this program. So, I turned and turned and turned and decided to just land on the runway again. Well, I did manage that, but I attempted to take off again, to see if I could get to the moon.

I ran out of fuel HERE, spiraling out of control.

Download the PDF book I linked few posts back - "Go Play in Space". The tutorials there will teach you everything about the controls and navigation. It's not hard, you just have to get used to it.

But knowing isn't doing. It takes some practice to master thinking in 3D :) I am now ready to start learning how to travel between celestial bodies. This will be great :)

Numpad 5 is the "kill rotation" autopilot. Your new best friend, trust me.

I'm afraid I'm not quite cut out to this game

I intentionally crashed the ISS into the Earth. In the middle of the Indian Ocean.

I guess I'm too fixated on destruction. :ar15: :run:

What would be really, REALLY skillful though, is to crash the ISS into the Kennedy space center...

Or the world trade center as I mentioned earlier.

the WTC doesn't exist

however it would be nice if your ship actually, um, crashed & burned. I hit the earth going at a velocity of what I assume to be 2,000 m/s and I just bounce off it?

I hit the water and float? :p

I think there's a check box somewhere that turns crashing on and off. :p

I could be wrong though. It's been over three years since I've flown it. :p

where might I find the mod (cause there's got to be one), where you can play as the enterprise?

Most ships in Orbiter don't include advanced damage simulation. If you want that, download Dan Steph's Delta Glider IV (a MUCH improved version of the vanilla DG) or one of the XR series of ships (Ravenstar, Vanguard, or Delta Glider XR).

Remember this is a Space Flight simulator, not a Crash simulator :D (Though I confess I once de-orbited Mir to see what happens too :D )

I know there was a star wars mod that added a few imperial star destroyers and the Millenium Falcon.

One such site that have (or used to have) addons for orbiter was avsim.com. But apparently, there was a big crash or system upgrade and a lot of uploads were lost. :(

^ It's the enterprise. Star Trek not Star Wars. ;). Oh well I will google it.

Greetings from the Moon! :) It's been one short evening spent in front of my laptop, but a giant leap forward for orbinautics

And before some conspiracy theorists start claiming that I've never stepped on the Moon, here is the proof:

Me in front of my ship.

Walking towards the Aurora lunar station...

LS Aurora - isn't it beautiful? At least as far as a lunar station can be?

(I hope there's someone in there, because I don't really have enough oxygen for the trip back...)

:D

congrats, whish I had some spare time for this.
