Any guitar players out there?

Macchio. And dammit, didn't he do a good job of miming it? Almost had me fooled, and I once won an air-guitar contest miming 'Eruption!'

It was a display which has has only ever been surpassed by Barney the dinosaur.

You won an air guitar contest by miming a tapping riff?- MUST have been the 80's!

BTW just in case anyone is looking for the sound track to listen to the guitar duel- don't bother it wasn't included!

I have an MP3 of the whole scene.

So now I see there are a few guitarists here. That's cool. Does anyone know any U2 songs? U2 is my favorite band. The Edge has a pretty unique style though. I tried to mess around with it a little. Does anyone else play any praise and worship songs?

Like I said, my guitar skill level right now is very basic. But it's a blast. I think it's the most fun musical intrument I ever tried. The only other ones I tried (in my youth) were violin and piano.

That's just my way of saying that I didn't think it was all that good- but I'm not a big fan of Ralph's- so maybe I'm biased.

I play electric and acoustic - have done for 34 years.

Actually that's not strictly true. I once had a gap when I didn't play for about five years. Yet when I picked up the guitar again I could play better than when I'd left off! The unconscious mind is an amazing thing.

So what do I play? Classical and folk on the acoustic. Rock and blues on the electric. But I've played all sorts when I've been in bands, except maybe country. I'm not currently in a band.

Ive played guitar for about 10 years or so, I started off on the bass then moved to guitar because I love that HEAVY DISTORTION!!! Yeah! uuhh huh huh huh :D

I mostly know Metallica songs because that was my favorite band when I was learning, so I can play most of their stuff except the fast solos. I used to play all day every day while on the dole in New Zealand:D but now I only pick it up a couple of times a week.

I have a friend with a bass guitar, a distortion pedal and a 100W empliphier and he uses them all together. The noise, the unberable noise!!!!

I love distortion:love: The heavier the better:D !

Well just wait till he gets the overdrive he's been saving for...

I think one of the hardest things for me to get down right now is not playing certain strings when you are not supposed to play them, like for D chords for example. Does anyone have suggestions on how to practice that?

Another example is The Edge's guitar near the end of the song "One."

tablature is like a D chord slided up to the 12th fret...i'll try to do it here.

12 12 12 12 12 12 12 13 12
13 13 13 13 13 13 13 13 13
12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12

Depends how precise you want to be- at higher speeds it doesn't matter too much if you hit the wrong string-its pretty much impossible to avoid it anyway.

Having said that my advice for practicing (which I know not everyone will like) is to play through chord progressions using a metronome. Start off slow and when you can play with no, or at least very few mistakes, increase the speed a little. Practice different strumming patterns incorporating 1/2 1/4 and 1/16 notes.

Also- don't worry about it too much for upstrokes- you don't need to hit every string in the chord- just don't make sure you don't come up too far.

Personnaly I play with my fingers so I can play up to four different strings at the same time without playing the ones I don't want.

The best way not to play certainstrings is to 'block' them. The sound is created when the string vibrates. If you touch it lightly (without pressing) it would prevet the string from vibrating.

In the example you gave you should crate a 'barre' with the first finger but without pressing .Use the other three fingers to play the chords. The chord in this case is 'C' (two half tones lower then D).

I like G-Man's suggestion, but myself in that particular instance of the high D I'd mute the bass strings with my palm, and the D string with the tip of the index finger I'm fretting the D-shape with.

Does that make sense?

Another take, possibly easier to really riff-out on, is to reach around the guitar neck with your thumb to mute those lower strings. Gives it a bit more attitude.

Man I wish I was playing right now...

I've been self teaching myself for about a year now (probably doing more harm then good:p ). The most difficult song I can play is the theme song to Kids in the Hall (The song is Having an average weekend by shadowy men from a shadowy planet). My next big step to take is to learn how to play ska style. Have any of you taken any formal lessons? Its something I would love to do, but lack of time and money complicate things. Oh, I have an acoustic, but I traded it to a friend for her electric (not permenatly though).

Wow this is cool, I never knew there was an Off-Topic forum!

I bought an electric guitar (PRS Santana, not the greatest but pretty nice) right before Thanksgiving. It's a great instrument. I can't play much yet, but I know parts of many songs. Solos are eluding me and so are barre chords. The only song I can play well is "Wonderwall" by Oasis, minus the solo, which I can do but not very well. That song is sooooo easy, but it's a great song. All Oasis songs are great. All British bands are cool (well, most of them.)

I think the best tab websites I've found are:

http://www.mxtabs.net

and

http://www.olga.net

Any other good ones?
