anyone ever knew this torching thingy?!

In my first game of C3C, my major rival (the Ottomans) were rapidly expanding and decided to declare war on my puny empire. Two turns later, a volcano erupted and not only flattened their capital, it killed the SOD heading for my territory. This made me get out of my chair and dance around the room for a minuite or two.

Does (can) a volcano torch any size city? I could see 6 or below getting auto-torched, but if 7 or above, there should be a roll of the dice to determine how many die, what structures are lost, and what units are lost. I just can't see a size 12 or higher city getting totally razed by a volcano.

I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure that lava knows no boundries. Except in the movie "Volcano" where Tommy Lee Jones was able to put up jersey barriers and spray the lava flow with water to stop it.

Cool! Devine retribution!

And yes, a volcano can take out any size city. In RoR I lost Neapolis to Vesuvius when it was my #2 city for population and production (pop. 22 IIRC). I even lost The Oracle! :( I remember thinking a few turns before: was it a mistake to build a wonder next to a volcano? Would it be spared? Sure enough, BOOM! All gone, Oracle and all! It was spectacular though, and fortunately I was well ahead by then anyway. I founded New Neapolis another tile further away...

did they add earthquakes in C3C? because the collosus of rhodes was destroyed by an earthquake.

I have never seen this but I'm off to fortify a unit next to a nearby volcano!!!!!

One thing I think the game designers missed out on though, volcanoes are usually surrounded by very fertile lands. This would also encourage needless building of cities near to potentailly deadly and funny volcanoes.

No there's no earthquakes in C3C but that's an idea for civ4! Also it was the Lighthouse of Alexandria not the Collous that was destroyed by an earthquake.

I think it's the tons of ash that fall from a catastrophic erruption that does the most damage, not the lava. You're more likely to suffocate/get buried in ash than be burned up in lava.

I had Vesuvius blow in my RoR game, but thankfully it only created pollution on the mountain itself.

Actually the pyroclastic flow from a violent volcanic eruption is the most destrucive force in that type of event. Hundreds of thousands of tons of broken rock, ash, pumice and poisonous gasses pouring from the mountain like an avalanche. The mass moves at 100 miles per hour and is as hot as 500 degrees C. ANything is it's path is scored, suffocated, burnt, crushed and buried.

Lava is beautiful and menacing, the ash clouds are ominous and also cause terrible effects but the pyroclastic flow is the executioner in a volcanic eruption!
