Anyone for SW:TOR?

Meh, everything is mind-boggling easy in WoW (save heroic raids, and not even all of them), which is precisely why I left it and don't want to see its horrible recent design to pollute other games.

But the amount of abilities that you SHOULD have been required to use was quite high - healing as a priest, for example, required more than 10 keys for routine play and twice as much if you wanted to use every tricks.

So I take its really so broken. :(

Spoiler :

http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=223941

George Lucas is a child. Worse, he's a child throwing a temper tantrum.

Fact is, he made up an awesome universe, and, when there were people to reel back his more stupid ideas, he made a decent movie (The Empire Strikes Back, ftw!).

But then a bunch of far-more-talented writers started playing in his universe and doing MUCH better jobs at it (Timothy Zahn, Mike Stackpole, Aaron Allston...). Those guys, the authors of the EU made Star Wars the mega-awesome, incredibly alive, and amazing universe that it is today. Those guys are why people are still hard-core fanatics about Star Wars.

Most Star Wars fans will tell you they hate George Lucas. Why? Because he has a lot of really stupid ideas, and he's completely disconnected with his audience (i.e. - Gungans, Ewoks, and Midichlorians).

He was throwing a tantrum with the prequels. He was basically saying, "No! These are my toys! And, I don't care that you've all done amazing things with them, they're mine. And, I'm going to do what I want with them! And, there's nothing you can do about it! Neener, neener, neener!"

And, nobody could reign him in this time.

He's the worst kind of "artist." He's the kind of artist who doesn't trust his audience, who doesn't think his audience is smart enough to get his story. He doesn't realize that once you publish or produce a work it's not "yours" anymore. Not in the strictest sense, anyway. Good writing will mean something slightly different to each person experiencing it. With the prequels, we got to see just what kind of writer Lucas was with such wonderfully cardboard lines as:

"...I have trained you since you were a small boy." Obi-Wan says this to Anakin in ROTS, like he's talking to a stranger. Like he has to explain to Anakin that they've been hanging out for the past 20 years, practically living together, forming an almost father/son relationship. Like Anakin doesn't know who Obi-Wan is or why he should listen to him.

or

"My powers have doubled since the last time we met, Count." Are we watching DragonBall Z? Does Anakin have some kind of Force-o-Meter to tell him how good he is? Nobody would say that!

Mr. Lucas is breaking a fundamental rule of good writing. He's using dialogue for exposition. His characters are literally describing things in their world for the audience. Instead of letting the action tell us how ****** Anakin is, he has his character come out and quantify it for us. Instead of trusting the audience to know who Obi-Wan and Anakin are by the time ROTS comes out, he has one of his characters come out and say it. This is stuff you learn in Creative Writing 101. One doesn't use dialogue for exposition. It's bad writing, and it's insulting to your audience.

It's not enough that he makes boatloads of money off of every book/toy/videogame/comic/idea that has anything to do with Star Wars, he has to pull his wang out and remind everyone that it was his idea to start with. It's not enough that he's raking in cash off of people far more talented than he. It's not enough that people still love Star Wars because of these more talented people and the stories they've told within that universe. He can't just sit back and watch this beautiful universe unfold and grow and expand. He's got to remind everyone that it's not how he would have done it, and therefore, it's not "official."

Well, Mr. Lucas, if you had kept it all to yourself; if you had told the story the way you wanted to, nobody would ever have read/watched it. You wouldn't have an infinite revenue stream. You wouldn't have Skywalker Ranch. You wouldn't have everything you have now. You'd be that nerd in a basement writing stories and making movies for his Mom as she reads and watches patiently, knowing they're terrible but massaging your ego anyway because you don't have any friends.

Good, you're "retiring." Maybe now the universe will be just a little less stupid. Maybe now we won't have to endure things like beloved characters being killed off because you don't trust your audience to know the difference between Anakin Skywalker and Anakin Solo (because no two people in any universe have ever shared a name, George /sarcasm). Maybe now we won't have to endure gungans or the idea that teddy bears with sticks and rocks could defeat an army of trained and battle-hardened STORMTROOPERS wearing armor designed to deflect small-grade blaster fire.

You know why you get hate-mail George? It's because you're that spoiled kid everyone knew growing up. You're the kid nobody wanted to play with after about half an hour because nobody would play the way you wanted them to. You get hate-mail because even though you're that jerk, you make unlimited amounts of money. You reap the rewards of those better suited to tell this story than you, and you're upset about it! You sit on a pile of money that you don't have to work for and then have the audacity to complain about and degrade the way that money gets there.
Sure, you created the universe, bully for you. We'd like you better if you weren't such a dick about it.

Sincerely,

Myk

Its directly from SWTOR forum. Lucas must have pretty colorful and fun life. Someone call Dr.Phill.

To be fair, maybe he said his powers doubled as a kind of boasting, I don't think it is needless exposition. And sometimes in a movie, you do need to do that. I've seen movies where the character will talk to himself, because the audience doesn't want to read what the character is thinking.

I feel the article is being overly harsh on George. Jar Jar Binks is the best creation any sci-fi author has ever come up with, just no one wants to admit it.

Seriously his only problem is catering to young kids. It's his fans that need to grow up, not George. Star Wars is sci-fi for kids and no one gets it. They think it should cater to their needs. People won't be happy unless it's rated R and has graphic violence. Star Wars was, and always will be a kids movie. Even the old movies had alien characters with stuffed animal like qualities to appeal to kids. The force in itsself is so simplistic, unfortunately bioware continues in that same lame light/dark trend. They kind of have to of course, or it won't be star wars.

That why its so funny.

In my honest opinion, Star Wars needs to die, its pure joke and turning into some very vicious. They have milked way too much money already.

So I am planning on buying this for myself after I finish up with my master's program.

That will, if all goes well, be in early May. By then, that should be long enough for more patches, and to get a better idea of the sort of game it's going to be going forwards.

But once again, I will be late to the party. ;)

I don't think Star Wars will die any time soon. The problem is any sci-fi here on out will never be as popular as Star Trek and Star Wars because SW/ST were like the first to become big in their genre (note I don't say SW is the same genre as ST as one is more serious and character orientated than the other). As far as computer games, I see easily another 20 years of Star Wars games.

Only problem with this game as I mentioned earlier is low populations. I was trying to find a group yesterday for a 4+ heroic, and the guy who was in my group was talking about the low server population problem. Although from what he's saying Empire side has like 2 or 3 times the people as republic. When we were trying to find a group, there were only 20 people on Alderaan. No idea how many Empire there were, I still haven't tried playing Empire. I'd like to if I ever get time. I guess people like the evil choices of empire. I don't know. In Wow Alliance always had higher population than Horde (although Horde players tended to be more experienced, and why we often won pvp battlegrounds). I admit the light side choices are kind of lame. But I role play that I support the republic, and hate the empire, and that I'm willing to go to any means to destroy the Empire, no matter how brutal. It's why my character name is Dark Avenger (I couldn't put a space in my name unfortunately :( ).

That's the only thing I'm worried about in this game, is low population. That's the problem with all these heroic areas, and why WOW stopped putting elites out in the open world (actually there are still many elites, but they often give you the power to make them not elite through a quest). Wow pisses me off too with low populations in the open world (the bad part of the lfg system). It's why I don't do questing in wow anymore. The quests are lame anyways usually with no voice acting, and you are by yourself in the world. It just feels like a substandard single player game. A world should feel alive and have lots of people running around in it. I have a feeling SWTOR is just going to be a single player game where you group up every once in a while if you can find a guild who does things together.

No spaces in character names? That's pretty stupid. DO they allow apostrophes in names at least?

Anyways, I tend to play more by myself than in groups, so low populations shouldn't be a huge dealbreaker for me.

kind of a minor spoiler. I only learned later that one reason there are no spaces is you can have a legacy name. I think you get legacy at level 40? I'm not sure. So that is kind of a last name I think.

you can choose what you want for that surname.

I just achieved it. Turns out you don't have to be level 40, just finish chapter 1. I finished it at level 36.

The problem is figuring out a name. I could have chosen Dark for my original name, and then avenger for my surname. But dark was probably taken, and there is no guarantee you'll have your surname available when you reach the end of chapter 1. So that makes it risky.

The fact that my name applies to all my characters makes this a difficult decision. I'm stuck trying to figure out a name. I wonder if it also applies to my empire characters, I think it does.

This could be the most difficult decision I have ever made in my life. :)

This should sum it up. :p

Better to wait is definitely the best idea.

meh. I think I'm playing a different game, or maybe I'm not far enough along. I read the comments down below, and I'm just not seeing the bugs like quests that can't be completed. I could complete every quest so far. There are a few annoying features. I had a quest to return to the fleet, but fast traveling to the fleet didn't work, I had to get in my ship, go to a planet, and then return. They didn't anticipate people fast traveling to the fleet.

My main issue is it's a little slow. The past day animations have been slow, and I find myself pushing buttons to attack, only to be told the enemy is already dead (Kira got the killing blow).

The game isn't breaking any new ground, but it's fun to play. Even if it's not very original.

So far, both names I chose are taken. Even one I thought was an obscure name from Norse Mythology. :( edit: I ended up using a name for a fairly obscure band that is also a latin word.

Okay, I have gotten a couple crashes since I made that post. One problem was due to my internet connection crapping out. They probably should have spent 1 more year on this game. Still too many things missing. While waiting for the balloon for the Tattooine datacrons, I tried out all the emotes. Many are not working and just give one line of text. Kind of lame, should have just left them out.

It's a fun single player game. I like some of the dialogue, some of it really makes me laugh. Combat is pretty fun, but hard on my hands. Hence why I am quitting this game. I made it to level 40. Leveling is pretty fast, maybe a little too fast. Although I think they should have slowed it down more, maybe then people would be more willing to run flashpoints and heroic areas. The lack of multiplayer activity on the republic side in this game is disappointing.

Sadly, this game suffers the problem all other MMO's have. Too much combat, too much button pushing and mouse movement. My hands are killing me, and I know if I don't stop now I'll get full blown carpal tunnel syndrome. MMO's are so addicting as well. There is that social pressure to level fast (in my case to catch up to my brother). I almost caught up to my brother. But long sessions took their toll.

I'm going to give it a B grade. I'd rather Bioware not made this game and did Dragon Age 2 right, but what can you do.

edit: a couple screen shots. One where you can appear to look through my skull and see the back of my eyes, and another where the little picture in the bottom left of Kira is blackface. Every once in a while the blackface bug comes up. It's kind of racially insensitive I think. :)

Sick....a Command and Conquer MMO-RPG made by BioWare----I'm in!!!!!

/fan boi

Warhammer Online was the nearest PvP-MMORPG out there but it mostly suffers from low populations too such that only the base PvP area has constant activity in it; and PvE questing is mostly only fun in the non-story versions (in the PvE questing it is robustly founded in the Games Workshop Universe, but plays out much the same as WoW quests---dull overall). There are plenty of PvP MMOs out there that are well-populated but I don't believe there's truly a PvP MMORPG (where you coop the main storyline, and the story is deep enough to really be considered RPG) with longevity.

I'd recommend checking out All Point Bulletin but it's really a PvP sandbox version of GTA with very little story (much customization however, and a bit of a story in that it's Gangs vs. cops with a little bit of Gangs vs. Gangs). Star Trek Online might be worth your time if SWToR didn't float your boat.

I ended up making it to 50 on my Smuggler and finishing her story. I thought the leveling experience in this game was really good, better than any MMO so far because it has good stories like WoW but with the addition of your character getting to take part in the conversations. Unfortunately once the story is done the game is just like any other MMO, it's WoW with less features. You run dailies, do level 50 dungeons, maybe battlegrounds or raids depending on what you like. Just like WoW, but with less responsive combat and less content overall. I haven't played since about a week after hitting 50 and ended up just canceling my account. Shame, if they could have come up with some new ideas for things to do at 50 this game could have been the new hotness, but as it is it isn't as good as WoW since endgame content is more crucial for MMO's than the leveling experience. An amazing leveling experience like this game has will keep people playing for a month or two, but you need great endgame content to keep people playing for years like WoW has done, and this game doesn't have it.

From what I pick up it is very much "unfinished". Hopefully by May I can get a good ideas of whether it is going to have staying power.

If nothing else, I would rather play a scaled-back WoW clone set in the Star Wars universe than WoW itself.

Well, there was a nice guy giving you advice about using shortkeys precisely to alleviate this kind of trouble.

I would rather play neither lol, I played WoW for years and I'm over it, if any MMO is going to hold my interest again they are going to need to change up the formula entirely.
