I've had an upsurge or spam lately. I use Thunderbird for email. It has an spam filter thing, which as far as I can tell does nothing. Any suggestions?

Switch to gmail.

If you don't want any spam to accumulate in the gmail spam folder, don't put your email on the www, ever.

Im curious, how do you switch from Thunderbird to gmail?

Presumably, he's using either pop or imap with Thunderbird, either of which work fine with gmail.

Using pop, spam never downloads at all. Using imap, you set the spam folder to only download headers, and you never have to look at it.

I recently revamped all of my email organization system. I now have 2 gmail accounts set up for imap via outlook, and all my other email accounts set to forward to one of my gmail accounts. Everything stays synced up between gmail and outlook, and most stuff gets automatically sorted on reception.

I've gotten Gmail to work in Thunderbird, but I prefer webmail.

My mom had troubles with Outlook Express so I managed to switch her to Thunderbird. Otherwise, I wouldn't have had a chance. Also when she reinstalled XP (again), I made her a backup of her email by copying the profile folder. In Outlook, she had to copy every individual one, although I don't know if you can copy the profile.

So she was asleep when I reinstalled Thunderbird for her, and then she woke up and checked her email and yelled at me to come, because she had no idea how all her emails didn't get lost.

I have never ever had any spam in both of my hotmail accounts I use, and none in my new gmail account, but my other gmail account I've used in three or four places only (compared to one of my hotmail accounts which has been used on at least 30 or so sites) is getting a little bit of spam (all in the spam folder luckily).

Strangely enough, none of that spam is trying to sell me viagra, it's about pleasing women, Kama Sutra, the gay community is moving it's agenda too fast, and apparently houses have been unearhed at stonehenge.

EDIT: Ummm what? Whenever I left click on my post (on the text) it opens a pop up window ????

My hotmail was flooded with spam. Then they switched to Windows Live, which didn't work on my Aptiva IBM w/ Windows 98, and I switched to Gmail.

I remember mom getting upset when I asked what Viagra was.

I just use Hotmail and trained it aggressively. Works pretty well. I just have to look in the junk folder once in a while to train it to allow some legitimate addresses in.

Thunderbird is allegedly trainable, yet it lets the same thing through over and over.

Can you filter it, like Gmail? For example, filter all emails with the word "Viagra" into the spam-folder.

I use gmail with thunderbird and imap and I dont get no spam.

it's a .yahoo email address, which is AT&T, which is also my ISP. There's a AT&T email address somewhere, but I've forgotten what it is. Never used it. This is the only email address I've used for maybe 6-7 years now.

Until recently I've managed to not get too much spam. 2-3 a day until the past few weeks, when it's gone up to maybe 10 a day.

The only sure-fire way not to get spam is to make sure spammer don't know your e-mail adress.

When you're already getting spam it's trickier; my hotmail was once getting quite a lot of spam, and I almost switched to Yahoo!, but somehow the spam ended. Opera's mail client is trainable, and that does seem to work. Spam is downloaded with my setup, but it's kept out of my way quite nicely.
