AOE or Civilization III?

AOE is an old game and has old graphics but it is simple and easy to figure out your opponents moves. I suggest C&C Generals for those that love the game but i perfer Civ3 for hour of enjoyment. My only problem is that i cant connect to anyone else online so i cant play Civ3 online, i want to though.

AoE: 11 p.m.

Civ3:  just one more turn (1 a.m.)......just one more turn (5 a.m.)....just one mor..jeez the alarm clock goes on and it's a new bright day and your dull cubicle awaits you.

perfect wording!

Each game is going to appeal to different people for different reasons. As noted by others, you're not likely to get many objective responses from this particular forum.

For me, and this is just my OPINION, AoE was "just another" RTS (spawned by the wildly popular Warcraft series). It added a few more bells and whistles, but, in the end, victory really came down to the ability to button-click, and micromanage, faster than your opponent(s). Granted, that's definitely a "skill" unto its own -- but it's not what I'm necessarily looking for in a grand strategy game. I enjoy the more thoughtful, methodical approach afforded by such games as Civ III, and the deucedly awesome Combat Mission series. The frenetic harum-scarum of AoE wasn't exactly my cup o' tea. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Warcraft>=C&C>AoE
civ (I,II,III) against other games wins with a big diference

I have played civ for 7 years now and stil cant get enough.
all other games (FPS, RPG, Sport simulations, Races, Adventure, D&D, RTS...) get relly boring in say 20 days but only CIV is immortal :goodjob:

I have never seen an RTS that couldnt be imroved by making it turn based. Thinking is so much more fun than clicking.

They both are good....

Civ3 was my first turn-based game (I think but I am pretty sure). I got addicted to it....I play them both...

But its going to be hard to decide to get Age of Empires III or Civilization IV.....Who knows....

EDIT:

Or get both of them...:D

If the romans break a peace deal with me, I'll consider taking a day off work to smite them. There is a real connection with Civ that I don't get from any other game.

I find that TBS are too hectic for my taste. There are so many things that need to be done and you don't have the requisite time to do them. Civ you can take your time, plus there are so many more features. but what really sets them apart for me is the ability to just get up and leave when you are playing Civ. AOE you gotta pause the game, and when your mom is screaming for you, that thakes too much time.

You can win a RTS by one single way - military. Whether domination, conquest or Kill the King.
Because of that, in any RTS there is only one goal: More units.

That's certainly the case with traditional RTSes, like AoE/AoK, but the genre is evolving. In Rise of Nations, for instance, technology plays a much greater part and you can disable military wins in the set-up screen and go for a tech. or wonder win. It also alows you to do stuff while the game is paused, so it's less frantic than the traditional RTS (I'm leaving out the Europa Universalis games, because while they are real time, they are nothing like the normal RTS).

I agree with everyone else though, the two genres aren't comparable, but as RTSes go AoE was one of the best. At least it didn't have bloody elves :D .

While I enjoy playing RTS cames because it often brings out my more tactical mind, I would always agree that Civ is a better, more addictive game.

But some good RTS games exist, esppecially Rise of Nations and Rome: Total War.

IMHO, the only game that got so addictive as Civ3 was Master of Orion 2. How many nights passed playing, how many epic wins in "Impossible" level!

Civ3 just sucks you in. I finally got mine working after a disc problem. I played 17 hours stragiht. First thing I knew is that it was light out. Then 1pm. Finally forced myself to put down keyboard at 2:30. My sleep is completly messed up. Thanks Sid.

get used to it. it happens to all of us but i do it everynight on my many games. Civ3 is only one of the many that is extremely addictive and will deprive you of your sleep.

I'd have thought Rome/Medieval Total War series is more comparable to Civ 3 taking into account that the former is both RTS and Turn-based.

If they improve the battle AI in RTW, i'd have to say RTW would give Civ3 a good spanking in terms of gameplay.

AoE is fun on the campaigns and multiplayer, but on a random map, (unless you play on islands), it's ******** because the AI builds stuff right next to you. AoE compared to Civ3 for fun factor is a tough call, but civ3 is a million times better for strategy. AoE is too chaotic. All you have to do is build the wonder to win also. For multiplayer, AoE is way better I find. Civ3 is kinda boring and has alot of stupid rules that other people want like tiny map/1 min turns/accelerated production and other players quit as soon as they start to fall behind others.

For a good balance of strategy and gameplay, Stronghold is what I recomend over AoE.
