sama bin Laden dead: Blackout during raid on bin Laden compound
The head of the CIA admitted yesterday that there was no live video footage of the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound as further doubts emerged about the US version of events.

Leon Panetta, director of the CIA, revealed there was a 25 minute blackout during which the live feed from cameras mounted on the helmets of the US special forces was cut off.

A photograph released by the White House appeared to show the President and his aides in the situation room watching the action as it unfolded. In fact they had little knowledge of what was happening in the compound.

In an interview with PBS, Mr Panetta said: "Once those teams went into the compound I can tell you that there was a time period of almost 20 or 25 minutes where we really didn't know just exactly what was going on. And there were some very tense moments as we were waiting for information.

"We had some observation of the approach there, but we did not have direct flow of information as to the actual conduct of the operation itself as they were going through the compound."

Mr Panetta also told the network that the US Navy Seals made the final decision to kill bin Laden rather than the president.

He said: "The authority here was to kill bin Laden. And obviously, under the rules of engagement, if he had in fact thrown up his hands, surrendered and didn't appear to be representing any kind of threat, then they were to capture him. But they had full authority to kill him.

"To be frank, I don't think he had a lot of time to say anything. It was a firefight going up that compound. And by the time they got to the third floor and found bin Laden, I think it - this was all split-second action on the part of the Seals."

The President only knew the mission was successful after the Navy Seals commander heard the word “Geronimo” on the radio, a code word from commandos reporting that they had killed bin Laden.

The absence of footage of the raid has led to conflicting reports about what happened in the compound. According to Pakistani authorities one of bin Laden’s daughter’s, who was present during the raid, claimed that her father was captured alive before he was killed.

There was also growing doubt about the US claims that Pakistan’s intelligence agencies involved in the raid.

Lieutenant General Asad Durrani, former head of the ISI, Pakistan's intelligence service, said it was "inconceivable" that his government was unaware of the US raid on Osama bin Laden's compound.

He claimed his country was forced to deny any knowledge of the raid to avoid a domestic backlash. The ISI's official line has been that bin Laden's compound had "slipped off our radar" after it raided the building in 2003 while hunting for another senior al-Qaeda operative. The agency claims it was unaware that bin Laden was hiding there.

Lieutenant General Durrani, however, said that the denial was a "political" maneuver by the intelligence services to avoid claims that they were working too closely with the US.

He said: "It is more likely that they did know [about the raid]. It is not conceivable that it was done without the involvement of Pakistani security forces at some stage. They were involved and they were told they were in position.

"The army chief was in his office, the cordons had been thrown around that particular place. The Pakistani helicopters were also in the air so that indicates that it was involved.

"[There are] political implications back home. If you say that you are involved there is a large, vocal faction of Pakistani society that will get very upset because we are carrying out repeatedly these operations with the Americans."
So let me get this straight: Now they're saying that Obama didn't watch the raid unfold live in the Situation Room?

I'm going to have to start keeping tally of how many times the story about the raid changes.

My advice: stop even trying to follow it. Its useless to do so. Unless you were actually there, and witnessed the whole thing, you have no idea what the truth actually is.

I am just going to trust that he was indeed killed, and apparently survivors that were at the compound have seemed to confirm this with the Pakistani government, so thats good enough for me.

While I would like full and accurate disclosure of our government on this, lets be real: your're never going to get it. Too many people are involved and each one will add or subtract some tidbit that will alter the story further and further. Thats just how human communication works at the basic level anyways.

When you're reading unofficial reports as the official White House position, you're libel to see changes in the story.

This was the story from the beginning...? I remember one of the first stories I read the following morning discussed the blackout that occurred when they went into the compound. In fact I believe the quote from Panetta discussing those "tense moments" was made the following day.

Looking at the article, which is dated on the 4th (Wednesday) I seem to be correct...it says "yesterday" meaning Tuesday the 3rd. So, two days following the raid, Panetta said there was a blackout in an interview with PBS. Ooooooh news!!!

Apparently, the soldiers were arguing whether to kill Osama or Obama.

Why is it that right wingers never know the difference between being witty and being tasteless?

Anyway, back on topic... apparently the story is still changing. Now it's a dog that got OBL

Plus, in terms of public consumption news, I find that about a week later there's usually a very good, indepth report in Time/Newsweek/NY Times. Until then, I just don't get too wrapped up in it.

you beat me to it. I was going to post the same thing. I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking this about the way they worded it.

and it's called a sense of humor. I don't even know if he's a right winger or not. Not that it makes any difference. I think even liberals should find that funny.

As for that link, is that true? Titanium fangs is the coolest thing I have ever read about. This could possibly be the coolest invention in the history of mankind. Why have I not heard about this? I'm getting this for my dog. :D

So basically, Nickey, you're saying that public news outlets reporting on a special ops assignment undertaken by the U.S. military aren't 100% accurate from the very first minute the event occurs. And that in some situations, government officials may even limit or conceal certain information about those special ops assignments.

May be news to you, but I think most everyone else gets that. That's kind of the point of having special ops, actually.

I knew it was too good to be true. It would have been the coolest invention ever.

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/05/no-navy-seal-dogs-dont-have-titanium-teeth/

Military dogs are awe-inspiring creatures, especially when attached to elite troops like the Navy SEALs. All day, the media have been in a frenzy over the fact that a military dog accompanied SEAL Team 6 on its mission to wax Osama bin Laden.

But let’s kill a misleading meme before it spreads further: Navy SEAL dogs don’t have titanium teeth.

A piece in The Daily took a good, detailed sniff around the German shepherds and Belgian Malinois that accompany special operations forces on patrol. But overshadowing all the cool radios and cameras strapped to the dogs is the claim that their “razor-sharp teeth are made of titanium,” at a cost of $2,000 per chomper. Getting bit by them “is like being stabbed four times at once with a bone crusher,” one dog trainer told The Daily. To quote enhanced-grille expert Pall Wall, that got the Internet going nuts.

There’s one problem. If the dogs do have Kanye teeth, it’s a sign something’s wrong with them.

“It would not be possible for them to use titanium teeth to make them even more aggressive,” says Jeff Franklin, owner of Cobra Canine in Virginia Beach. “They’re not as stable as a regular tooth would be, and they’re much more likely to come out” during a biting.

The only reason to have titanium teeth? Medical reasons, he says, like “if a dog breaks a tooth … it’s the same as a crown for a human.”

Franklin should know. Cobra Canine got a $550,000 contract in April from the U.S. Special Operations Command to train military working dogs for Naval Special Warfare Group 2. (He says it’s been “three years” since he’s worked with the very secretive “DevGru,” or Team 6.) That’s a re-up from the past two years, when he’s had contracts for dog training with the command that paid out $470,000 each.

Indeed, the command’s requirements for dog teeth don’t seem to account for the circumstances that would lead to grille enhancements. “All four canine teeth must be present and must not be weakened by notching, enamel hyperplasia or abnormal, excessive wear,” it reads.

In other words, if for some reason you see a SEAL dog with light glistening from its titanium teeth, your proper reaction is pity for the creature. “It’s a detriment, not a help,” Franklin says. On the other hand, if you’re coming into close contact with the jaws of a SEAL’s dog, you’re in for a lot of trouble from his very deadly master.

There have been goverment officials that "misspoke" as well, not just media outlets spreading false info.

I suspect that conspiracy theorists would not be happy if the government provided a webcam stream of all the rooms in the White House.

At least there's no doubt that Navy Seals has dolphins that can sniff out mines and sink subs with the solid state laser mounted to their dorsal fin.

Why is it that right wingers never know the difference between being witty and being tasteless?
I don't know, Bucky. You'd have to ask a right winger. Now if you have questions on tastelessness or opinions on how journalists should be able to handle their own language, I might be your man.

Anyway, back on topic... apparently the story is still changing. Now it's a dog that got OBL
I can't help feeling a bit sorry for the poor creature (the dog, that is) having to participate in this kind of human activity.

At first I thought that the inevitable hollywood movie would be a dramatic/action one. But now I'm leaning on a parody.
