Hi Guys,

First up I want to apologise if this has been mentioned in a previous thread, but a search brought up a million threads and I can't really review them all!!

I'm thinking about buying a Mac in a few weeks and want to know if Civ V (and Civ IV) will work on it.

It's a quad core 2.8GHz with 16GB of memory and a ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor.

Is this ok?

I don't have the greatest knowledge with regards to computers.

thanks in advance.

wait, the new iMac will come out before Civ V comes out, in fact it might come out within a month

That computer is more than enough to run Civ 5. You might want to consider getting your hands on a copy of Windows (XP or Vista can be had cheaply, I think), and use Boot Camp on your Mac. This allows you to boot into Windows, and thus play Windows games.

I think you can't buy Windows XP anymore...

But W7 is one of the best OS from Microsoft in a long time, and if you have access to some student discount or some other OEM license, it's not very expensive (specially if you have the money to spend on a Mac :p)

For playing games you should use Win7 as it will make a lot of things easier. (support aso.)
Why would someone need 16 GB RAM while using a quite old GPU? (or did you mean the Radeon 5850 ?)

Content creation probably... Video, Photo, CAD, etc...

The 4850 is from the previous generation but it's not exactly OLD... it has come out around exactly 2 years ago? Due to consoles holding back game development, it will be a good card for another 2 years at least.

But I agree that, if there's an option, he should go with the 5850 (DirectX11 & more powerful)... You never know what game he might want to play next! :ar15:

inb4 the PC's. Civ 4 will work fine. I can play it on my 08' Macbook. BTW, you will love the Mac! I love it for the interface alone, but it's great for Movies, photos, and nearly anything else!

Hey, sorry to add to the "do-you-think-my-computer-can-run-CivV" pile but I was recently passed down a 2008 unibody Macbook with the following specs:

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (P7350/P8600)
2 GB RAM (I plan on upgrading to 4GB soon)
Integrated Nvidia GeForce 9400M with 256 MB shared with main memory
(up to 512 MB available in Windows through Boot Camp)

Any thoughts on whether or not this machine will have a chance at the lower/lowest settings?

Thanks!

It will run on those specs (Windows boot camp)... I'm 99% sure.

I'm serious, wait until the update, in 10.6.4 they found partial drivers for the 5850 and the GTX 480, now the 480 is too big for an iMac (obviously for a Mac Pro), I think the 5850 can fit in an iMac

EDIT: Some people managed to make the drivers work with a 5970  (as well as most 5000 series), also people got Mac OS X drivers for the GeForce 465, 470 and 480  some sexy toys are coming Apple's way
