Ara: History Untold

Against the Storm as a named inspiration! That game's so good, hooked me in 100%. I will keep my expectations in check but I'm happy to see that!

I am really feeling that content starvation but what can you do......

Oxide has released another gameplay video. It's very short, but I'll take it. :)

Since it is part of a new series, I have created a thread for it, which you can find here:

Against the Storm is excellent. ❤️

Encarta England is now up. 👍

So they're intentionally holding back...well, I can respect that. It also explains why that was the end of public alpha testing. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to play Act 1, but that's as far as my privilege went. I'm curious to see what the next acts have to offer. :)

I just cross my finger and hope this is legit, I can't understand holding back stuff with a strategy game, it's not a graphic adventure or a narrative action game for fudge sake....

i don't know if against the storm is that great.

it's definitely very well-made and incredibly addicting, but the game gives a feeling of being stressed, dark, and not all that enlightening for the amount of time you spend on it.

it's sort of like scrolling through themed content on youtube shorts. you get your fill but you wonder what you spent your time doing afterwards. maybe just me.

That's alright! I know that feeling as well, though personally I find the game satisfying to dip into for a run or two -- I get really into the building/production/building placement for an hour or so, and have fun seeing what kind of 'build' the cornerstones give me, then wrap it up :D (I usually stick to relatively lower difficulties though, I just want a chill time gathering and producing stuff, hahaha)

I'm guessing it's not quite as much of a stress point when it comes to Ara, but it does have some magic to it that I like, so I'm interested in what they got from it...

Checked again. More players are tracked now. One of them has even accomplished the achievement "Barbenheimer: As a female or non-binary leader, bombard cities 100 times over any number of games". Must be a warmonger, incredible.
Just saw that post at Reddit, so they're reviewers and influencers now playing the game. The reviews will be released on 23. The original X post:

Nice article here that addresses modding in this part:

So, Ara: History Untold may come to consoles in the future, and it will probably enjoy future content expansions and additions after launch, but what do we know? Well, I've now been told by two separate Oxide Games representatives that one feature is definitely being planned. "There is work looking into modding support as a primary field of interest for our developers; we understand the utility for a game like this," Leskur told me. During Gamescom 2024, there was a similar discussion on how modding support can be vital for a game like Ara: History Untold to enjoy a long, healthy lifespan.

Ara: History Untold is built on Oxide Games' proprietary Nitrous Engine, a massive undertaking that has contributed to the game's long development time (which, I was told at Gamescom, may not have been possible without Xbox's backing). The Nitrous Engine boasts neutral core threading for full support of up to 16-core PCs and a custom Microsoft DX12 rendering engine, all in the name of visuals and (most importantly) performance that simply wasn't possible with off-the-shelf engines. This also allowed Oxide Games to begin building modding support into Ara: History Untold from the beginning.

Well, that's great news. 👍

Oh and the article mentioned there will be a colorblind mode. Very thoughtful. 😃

So, I'm currently in my first month of my PhD program in history, and I've decided (rather sadistically) to finish most of my requirements by the start of October. Some of my courses allow students to choose which weeks they would want to submit discussion papers on, and all of them fall within the first week of October. Which means I won't be able to play this at launch
One of the weeks I'm writing a paper on is about global history, so at least that would keep my hype going haha

I really, REALLY hope that Ara comes with a TSL earth map from the get go, or that modders can make one quickly. I think this game would do super well with it. And the chosen start civs are well balanced for TSL.

Agreed. The huge map sizes should make for a really good TSL map. Here's hoping. 😀

Less than a week before release! I'm excited. I'm glad this forum and reddit exists. Is there a discord?

The steam forums have some good takes here and there but also is a bit of a cesspool.

Reddit is quite the cesspool, yeah.

New game guide up. Talks about your first few turns.
