Archeology - How does it work?

It wou;d be nice if archeology also extents to post techology wars in links to the archeology on World War sites, especilly in consideration to the archeology of Blitz sites. Also it be extra nice later on to be able to do archeology of sea battles so we can search for the Mary Rose.

I'm only on my second played match ever of the civilization series and I think it would be quite interesting if spies could take other civs archaeological finds, and art in addition to just stealing technology and having a city view (even though both of those are fantastic things not to go to waste).

This would be a cool idea to at least have this sort of option with the spy and it would be a challenge to see how this works. Supposedly the relics and artifacts(according to dev team) would be displayed in a museum provided you have one. Maybe have a spy steal relics and artifacts to sell to the black market?

I am so very excited about the inclusion of more great people...and the whole mechanic of this Great Archaeologist can be used in so many other areas of the game in the future! A GREAT step forward to adding more depth and "story" to an already great game. Great scientists....research jungles for X...or even natural wonders... The concept of the once beloved/hated "random events" might just come back into the game (Hopefully-IMHO). Great Prophets might actually have more use after you build the first two No?

This ONE area of great people units can be exploited in so many ways and add so much more depth into the game with a minimum of code I think. Fingers crossed.

I have not been this excited about an announced expansion of features since BTS. GREAT Work!

Basic diplomacy would be required to reach artifacts out side of your borders/no man's land.

Open borders would begin the flood of tourism, encouraging a cultural competition over ideologies.

etc etc

I think the danger is getting too carried away in imagining mechanics that does not fit the scale and scope of the game. Similar mechanics would be Scouts, Missionaries and Great Merchants; and Archealogists (and Great Writers/Artists/Painters) wouldn't act any different than those.

Archaeology is one of the more novel features in BNW, I think.

In Civ IV I remember chancing upon an Aztec empire that had been completely destroyed and occupied by barbarians before I'd even had a chance to meet them. Discovering and conquering this fallen empire is one of my favourite memories of Civ.

Looking forward to seeing if something similar will start happening in Civ V now.

I wish that the map would get filled out with some dinosaur bones or something else in the parts that did not have much war, to add a random factor to the prescience involved in the archaeological landgrab race. This may reduce the temptation to cheese the mechanic long in advance and give the AI a better time of finding some.

^^Cool idea! Bones to a museum for culture via an archaeologist...or to a "lab" via scientist for science. One mechanic delivering two possible outcomes! whynot.

Keep in mind it's not entirely battles. Goodie Huts and Barbarian Camps apparently also can trigger them. I wouldn't mind seeing Dinosaur bones, but keep in mind that would require a Paleontologist unit, not an Archaeologist ;)
