Also, it's not just that they can be distracting, but they would affect server load times as well as individual users load times.

I hope the answer is no once a ruling is made. If you allow animated profile pics, then you'll get more and more requests for animated avatars and images being enabled for sigs.

Right now the "skirmish line" is at animated smileys in signatures, and I kind of like it there...

I'd think it'd be fine. It's not as distracting as an animated avatar is, since you actually have to want to see it when you view a profile.

Can't see what harm it would do to let people have animated profile pictures. It's not like people are going to look at them often anyway.
