Argh!!! Windows XP sucks!!!

I just installed Windows XP yesterday but I´m going to de/install it ASAP

Everything loads a lot slower than in Windows 98, the new Start menu is terrible, I can´t take screenshots from DOS programs, a lot of handy programs from Win 98 are gone and replaced by terribly bad programs, or not replaced at all etc. etc. etc.
And since five minutes my keyboard has gone mad and assigned different symbols to a lot of buttons!
I didn´t know they could make such a bad Windows, this is worse than 3.1. Unbelievable.

Well I´m gonna figure out how to get back to Windows 98 now, I guess I´ll probably have to format

Good luck. I lost a lot of my stuff with WinXP (My fault, I overwrote the windows directory) and I was never able to get it off. Of course, I didn't format it, I had programs and data that I would have lost.

It's not that bad. Best windows I"ve seen yet. You can turn on the 'classic' start menu, and it'll be the one you know and love. As to screenshotting from Dos, that I'm not sure of. I don't use dos anymore. But perhaps someone here has an answer. . .

If you don't have a fast enough processor (1Ghz+), or enough RAM (128mb+), XP is not going to run smoothly. However, for a system taht can run XP, XP runs with much more stability than previous versions of windows.

Well your computer probably is slow. There are plenty of ways you can make Windows load less services to speed up the OS if you have a slow computer. Also, the new start menu is simple to change. Just go to the display settings and then choose Appearance and choose the classic view - it will make everything be like classic. And then right click the taskbar and choose properties then the start menu tab and change it to classic to get the classic start bar. Simple as that.

Did you upgrade from 98 to XP or something? You should consider doing a clean install instead.

Hah! I've used every version of Windows and most versions of DOS, and by far Windows XP and 2003 are the most stable OSes I've used from Microsoft.

On a Pentium 4 1.8 GHz machine with 512 RAM, I'd have to say that XP runs better than anything out there. Yet on the computer in the next room (family's computer), a Pentium II, with 256 RAM, it totally sucks. XP wasn't built to run on old machines.

Yes I did an upgrade.

Well good for you, but I have a different opinion about that. XP has thrown me out of games several times, 98 never did that.

Do you work for Microsoft or something? I decide if and why I like 98 better than XP. I like change only if it makes things better. And in my experience XP definitely wasn't better than 98.
Part of the problems will probably be due to my slow computer yes, I have a pentium II 300, 64 MB RAM. But I have a friend who has a 2000 Mhz Pentium, and XP runs slower than 98 on his computer too!

In each case, I'm not going to bother about XP anymore, I have 98 back already

64mb RAM is WAY too little to run 2000/XP. I'd say that 256mb is the acceptable minimum for decent performance.

XP is the best OS Microsoft has ever released.

Windows 98 is end of life anyway...so you won't be able to get new drivers or support after the end of this year.

XP has the most stable core available (when installed on NTFS...although FAT32 is still good) and it's program support is excellent. I've run DOS games on here that I couldn't run on Win98 (but did work on Win95)

You gave up too quickly.

The start menu and interface can be made to look just like Win98. And that saves on performance too. But you have no right to install XP anyway...your computer is too slow.

Like installing Win95 on a 386...a bad idea.

You could probably run Windows 2000. But it won't be that fast, i suggest at least doubling your ram to 128mb...it costs next to nothing for an extra 64mb stick and it should be alot faster.
In fact, in the UK a 128mb stick is only £15..in europe it can't be that expensive either.

300mhz and 64mb of RAM? Yikes, I feel your pain. Those are the absolute minimum specs for running XP pretty much. Yes, you're far better off with 98 until you can get an upgrade for your hardware - that or you can always give linux a try

Honestly, XP is extremely stable. Cornmaster pretty much touched on that. I have never gotten the blue screen of death once using XP. All my games run under it, and for those old DOS games I like to play that don't run under XP, there are programs and ways to make them run so you don't need to worry for it. Don't get me wrong, 98 SE was a great OS - much better than ME, however 2000, 2003, and XP are far superior (if you have up to date system specs that is )

I don't mind at all about my system specs. I don't play any games that require higher specs and I don't need any programs that require higher specs.
Once there are going to be a lot of good programs that I can't run with my system specs or that need XP, I'll take xp in consideration again. But for now, I'm happy with Win 98.

Dude, go to Norrod at the end of the Steentilstraat. It's in the length of the Gedempte Zuiderdiep (not the road with Holland Casino, but the one right to it). There they sell the best computers for the lowest price and give good service.

But with this machine I'd stick to Win98 if I were you.

By the way, I've got WinXP, but I can't take screenshots of DOS either.

At first, i hated Windows Xp. Most of my games kept on crashing for no apparent reason, didnt like the look of it, utilities that i liked on 98 weren't/didnt appear to be there etc...

But then i installed Service Pack 1, searched around on it for a while, and familiarised myself with the start menu etc. Now i love it

Everything has been made alot easier to do, ie Direct cable connections, accessing files whilst running programs, blah blah blah.

If you dont have a fairly fast pc, then you should DEFINATELY Uninstall it, but for me, with a 2.4ghz 512 RAM pc it works like a dream

Don't bother with XP on your machine. I've installed Windows 2000 Pro on my machine after having Win98(first edition!) on there for a while. I didn't go for XP because-

1)Win2k was cheaper than XP when i bought it!
2)Win2k does not hog ram and processing power like XP
3)Product activation- Argh no!
4)I hate XP

It runs fine for me on my pc (Celeron 533mhz 256RAM) which isn't too dissimiliar to your machine. Again its a "RAM thing" you should just get 128mb more ram and Windows 2000 Pro and you definately see the difference compared to Windows XP

Yeah I know where it is, the coffeeshop/bicycle-store street. It's a good shop, I've bought some parts of my computer there actually. When I buy a new computer I'll definitely buy it there.

As someone who switched from 2000 Pro to XP Pro, I find Windows XP to be a superb operating system. System start-up in 12 seconds! Whoohooo! Just be sure to use XP Anti-Spy and SpeedUp XP to get rid of some of that nasty spyware...

I have an old computer, 450 MHz and 128 meg RAM. I installed XP last fall, and haven't had it crash (so I had to restart) for me once. I usually strain it, like playing civ3, winamp and gnucleus at the same time. When I did this on ME the computer crashed once a day, so I just XP.
The games that has crashed, have you tried to reinstall them after the upgrade? If they where installed in win98 I expect them to crash once a while.

"Your Computer is slow" shouldn't be an argument. If something works in Windows 98 there's no reason it should run slower under XP. Ergo, Microsoft has done it again. It now forces you to buy a whole new computer to go with the system, and also make other needless expenses to make everithing run "smoother".

Culture shock? I personally was shocked that people would actually pay money for 2,3 extra utilities, a shiny CD and a nicely coloured case. Everything that's done under XP can also be done under Win 98 or Win 95. Wake up people !

P.S. For comparison, the latest version of Linux actually works on all configurations old and new. Windows should also work on all systems.

Pish posh. XP was built for higher end processors and different chipsets. They don't give minimum specs on the box for nothing you know. There are services that XP loads into your RAM, and when you only have 64mb (the minimum needed) you aren't going to have a system that performs well.

They have done nothing of the sort. If you don't want to upgrade your system then don't buy XP. Upgrade to ME, 2000, or just stick with 98. Products get their service discontinued after a few years, and that is normal - it's not "The evil Microsoft trying to force the average consumer to buy their products." If they continued to support 3.1, 95, and 98, they would begin to lose money - any smart company knows better than to continue to support outdated products when they risk losing profits.

When I said culture shock, I meant in the sense of a new style and new icons after having been used to the classic style. Sure you can do some of the same things in 98 and 95 - only XP has a much more stable OS and file system - it supports more programs - it is built to perform higher than the other two - and many other things. I am quite well awake and I like not having a blue screen of death on my screen every few hours thank you very much
