Arioch's Analyst Thread

If someone is fluent in German, perhaps will be able to analyze this video a bit better. It's in a really good quality and zoomed in, so there are a lot of data about combat odds, promotions and such.

I can just help a bit with what the guy with the mike is saying: He likes the combat system, but not the social policies because you can't change them once you have picked them, which he says is "unrealistic". Other than that, he likes and is going to spend many a night playing Civ V.

Somebody else is going to have to analyze the video, I'm afraid.

Thanks feline friend, I was hoping for deciphering interface descriptions, like bonuses and penalties due to various circumstances etc. But thanks nonetheless.

From Murray's video it seems that despite surviving your units can take very heavy casaulties at times, so it all seems challenging to me, worries about combat system pampering the player are gone for me :)

After dropping the nuke on Egypt, the presenter says: "A nuclear missile is going to take care of that modern armor, but it will also mean we'll probably have a hard time winning a diplomatic victory in the game; no one's going to like us very much after this." For those who have been insisting that there are no diplomatic penalties for using nuclear weapons.

It frees up two uranium points too.

Arioch, you don't seem to have longswordsmen listed in your gallery. Are you treating them as unconfirmed? I seem to recall they were mentioned in the E3 trailer. These dudes carry some long blades ...

Its exactly a month till this game comes out, and it looks fantastic. My opinion has totally changed. Not only the fact that I realized that my graphics card is old, but runs games that are 2 times as demanding as CiV so Im pretty sure I will run this game. But Arioch's page really showed me all the stuff that has been cluttered all over this site and made me want this game more. Thank you Arioch :)

P.S. I wonder whats happened to 2k Greg, he hasnt been on in a VERY long time.

Welcome back to the fold, D712 :)

A.I. Egypt didn't buy any tiles to expand their culture beyond the coastline? Isn't that bad strategically. All those gunboats...

I think that was clearly a pre-set situation to show off all the things he did - not a typical game. Everything was very scripted with the order he show cased things, someone probably designed that map for the demonstration.

I see variants here:
1. There are AI penalties as in previous games. I'm dying to hear how they work now together with what we already know.
2. There are City-state penalties. Looks like highest chances for me, especially with diplomatic victory notice.
3. The penalties could be just a reviewer suggestions based on previous civ experience.

#3 is not a possibility, because the presenter was a Firaxis employee.

I confess that, in spite of some lingering doubts about certain design decisions, this game is looking increasingly like a MUST BUY for me. That said, it definitely still looks like I'll be playing Civ4 & Civ5 equally-which will be the first time I've ever done that ;)!

Aussie.
