Arioch's Analyst Thread

So I still see England as potentially the most powerful faction.

That is a bold assumption pre-release - especially considering the Romans have two very powerful ancient units, probably making them capable of wiping out an enemy or two, before the British ever get their Longbows. Also, the Roman special ability is valuable in each and every era and situation, while the British is strong, but situational.

But we'll have to wait and see ;)

I'm curious how the relationship between longbows and cannons will be. The latter might be stronger (26 vs 12?), but has set-up time (confirmed), only 2 range and costs more. I know I was wrong by assuming that cannons probably wouldn't have set-up time to replace ALL early ranged units, but this is a case where it might be reasonable to keep the old unit for quite some time, bringing the topic up again.
What should Longbows be upgraded into, anyway?

They do get extra gold from barb camps (That's no longer random apparently), and free units are a much bigger deal when warriors cost 35 hammers, and spearmen 40. Landsknechts look really powerful too. 33 hammers for a 10 strength unit just screams "Mass me".

Are upgrade costs proportional to the difference in the cost to build the units?

If so, upgrading from a 35 cost warrior to a 33 cost landsknechts might be free.
If so, also free upgrades from all the barbs you converted.

Apparently it was on quick speed so it would be a 35 cost warrior to a 50 cost Ls.

Of course the Spearman->LS upgrade would probably be free... and unless you needed those spearman it might be worth waiting since Warrior->Spear->LS might cost more than Warrior->LS direct.

It's not quick speed, but the upgrade cost (or lack of) should be interesting to find out.

Not at all, Kenny, not at all !

This is what I meant.

Thats from August 6, thats when it was added to the site atleast.

Added: Fri Aug 6 1:06pm 2010 AusGamers chats with 2K Games' Producer Garrett Bittner about the upcoming and hugely anticipated Civilization V, the fifth iteration of the classic strategy franchise.

Nothing new...nothing new at all :( Sorry!

Also the link from MisterBarca is just a transcript of the same video you linked to.

Just played some at Pax. Switching to an incompatible tree costs one turn of anarchy. Once you switch back all the policies you had there become active again.

When you lose your cap a new city becomes your cap temporarily until you reclaim the old one.

That's good info, thanks for that!

Did you get to play long at PAX? What were your thoughts, out of curosity? (of Civ V, not necessarily PAX - I'm sure that's awesome!)

Maybe an hour. I clearly cared more than the others there ;)

New interface plus laptop plus background noise made it hard to tell. I felt the interface was better in one area - the notifications system is great - but bad for micro. Checking build progress, tiles worked and research all seemed to take multiple steps.

I still find the lack of variety in tile yields and improvements very disappointing and am quite happy with most of the rest.

Arioch, you could add the moderm colosseum to your collection.
