I've been doing a lot of reasearch recently into the arms trade and illegal arms trafficking.

i was thinking about how in CivII you could "give" a unit to a forign power as a present.
why not bring the arms trade into the game, considering its one of the largest industries on the planet, and its fuelled every war in the modern period?

we don't have to worry about what is better "M4 vs AKM" debate, basically each Civs level of tech with their industrial capabilities would decided who has developed the most advanced arms, it could be catagorized into several fields "Small arms/light weapons" "Heavy Weapons" "Aircraft" "Tanks/Armour" etc.

you will find if your weapons are the most advanced and have good a reputation everyone on the planet will be wanting to be buy your civ's brand of machine guns or fighter-jets.

Easy money!

if your neighbour needs military assistance send him 10,000 machine guns to help him out!

also the UN might get annoyed with you if you keep exporting weapons to an evil dictatorship for cheap oil!
that could lead to sanctions!

You can gift units in civ 4 BtS.

I would like the idea of being able to sell them

Yeah, I'm a fan of an arms trade of sorts, but think it should be part of an entire move towards more economic specialisation, i.e. some civs would concentrate on commerce, others on power, other on production, and they could trade more. This thread would probably be worth a look, BTW.

Now, what I'm not really a fan of is an arms trade in which the minutiae of arms are delved into. Such as different developed versions of tanks, or something. I think it is much better to go with an arms trade based off some civs producing lots of standard units and selling them in exchange for lots of gold, which another civ would produce, although this idea is limited by the constraint of military matters being too important in Civ.

I assume that you would build individual units with or with out up grades and then offer them for sale via the diplomacy screen.
You could click on the units you would like to sell and they would appear on the diplomacy screen when you open it and be treated as another trade good.
"5 tanks for Oil"
"No we want these 7 tanks for Oil"

I just read the last couple of posts on this, and stockpiling resources/supply lines (all of which I'm a fan). One cool factor would be it would mirror real life; at the end of a war on another continent it would be more economical for you to scuttle/sell/destroy your units than transport them all home.
