What about it do you like as a cover that betters the original?

Yes , I've heard it. The whole album, actually. Though the last time I remember listening to the album in full (I never did get around to ripping it onto my computer...) was pre-cuncussion so I don't remember some of it.

Actually, I know a member of Mudcrutch, although he wasnt in the 2008 reunion.

Funny story.

The Don CeSar is actually located on St. Pete Beach.

It is quite a landmark around here. It was built in 1928 when you still needed a boat to get there from St. Pete. For decades, it was the first thing boaters in the Gulf Of Mexico would see as they approached land, and it has always been painted that shade of pink. It was particularly famous just after it opened. The Yankees used it as their base for Spring traning for 3 years during the depression. It was bought by the Army during WWII and turned into a convalescent hospital. Then it became a VA administration center. When the VA finally moved out to a more central location, it was almost demolished. But a local hotel owner finally bought it and turned it back into a hotel.

And for you Tom Petty fans, he made a music video there in 1985.

totally cool.

the yankess, btw, are a professional baseball team based in the borough of the Bronx, in New York City, New York. They belong to Major League Baseball's American League East Division. One of the American League's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles and moved to New York City in 1903, becoming known as the New York Highlanders before being officially renamed the "Yankees" in 1913. From 1923 to 2008, the Yankees' home ballpark was Yankee Stadium, one of the world's most famous sports venues. In 2009, they moved into a new stadium, also called "Yankee Stadium".

tom petty, btw, did the half time show of super bowl xlii, which wasnt held at the yankees stadium, but at the university of pheonix stadium.
however, the giants won that game and subsequently, on the following Tuesday, February 5, New York City hosted for the Giants a ticker-tape parade up Broadway in Lower Manhattan. It was the first along the famed "Canyon of Heroes" since the New York Yankees won the 2000 World Series.

I remember during the SuperBowl, waiting for the halftime... "I DONT CARE ABOUT THESE STUPID FOOTBALL GUYS, HURRY UP AND GET TO THE GOOD STUFF!!!!!" Because they had the little clock ticking down but they would stop farrrrrrr too often to rewind the tape and it was an exercise in frustration for me.

It's not so much a case of better , but adds something different to the original
It's got a dirty sound and I think Petty's voice suits . The lyrics have some really cool references to weird Cajun stuff like being " raised and weaned on chicken bile" , things I associate with Louisiana and Florida like lightning and crocodiles . Sure , he didn't write them , but it capture the spirit. The way it's just 3 chords repeated gives it that hypnotic feel.

God I hate describing WHY I like music . It's hard.

I once saw an article that mistakenly called Petty a Cajun and I went "what are they talking about?"

Interestingly, T.P. is 1/4 Cherokee. Which led this this interesting discussion:
Me: Tom Petty is 1/4 Native American.
Mom: That's not true!
Me: It is.
Mom: I already knew that. He has high cheekbones.

Well, the Super Bowl is an event devoted to football with music as an added goodie. Not the other way around.

I know. But it was frustrating.

Now here's something bizarre I noticed:

1977-11-07_The%20Red-and-Black.jpg

A simple ad, eh? But I've got a list of shows from November 1977:

November 7, 1977 Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, CA (opening for Nektar)
November 14, 1977 Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, OH (opening for Meat Loaf)
November 15, 1977 Painesville Agora, Painesville, OH (opening for Meat Loaf)
November 19, 1977 Bottom Line, New York, NY (with the Dingoes)
November 20, 1977 Bottom Line, New York, NY (with the Dingoes)
November 23, 1977 Civic Arena, Pittsburgh, PA (opening for the J. Geils Band)
November 26, 1977 Tower Theatre, Philadelphia, PA (opening for Rush)
November 29, 1977 My Father's Place, Roslyn, NY (WLIR radio broadcast)
November 30, 1977 Palace Theatre, Albany, NY (opening for Edgar Winter)
.

Nowhere near Georgia, and they were in Albany, NY the same day the ad lists.

Now here's my best guess -- I'm wondering if there might've been a mixup with the other Heartbreakers that was from New York. Anyone want to comment?

Uh, "Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Epitome of Punk Rock?" Yeah, I'd say there was a screwup somewhere.

Yeah, that I always found a little odd. TP&HB were considered "punk" for a while (it's weird) but....

I was discussing it with a Petty correspondent and I told him about this and he mainly agreed with me, that somebody mixed up the two Heartbreakers.

Regarding the punk thing, look for a magazine from 1977 on my site, it's called "Back Door Man." I'd link it myself but there's so many bad words it would violate the one-click rule.

Would anyone be interested if I linked interesting articles from my site? Not too many... On my forum I do it daily but that would drive everyone nuts here I'd say.

No I would not be interested.

...Then why post? I thought only people who were interested would post. Odd.

Then why ask? The answer you were going to get was pretty obvious.

There is a link in your signature if anyone wanted to read these articles that you find interesting. Remember we are a Civ Fanatics forum...

Its a big site and not everyone knows where the good stuff on it is.

aimee, this is an ask a pettyologist thread, not a vomit vaguely Petty-related articles all over the place thread.

"vaguely"? oh really.

Perhaps you should edit the OP to link to it and then you don't have to worry about posting articles from it ever again.
