Ask a Part-Time Pettyologist -- THE SECOND TRY

OK , let's get this thread back on topic .

@Red Door , what's your favourite Petty album ?

Honestly, I think you are lying to yourself (being a music fan or a Tom Petty fan) if you do not instantly fall in love with Damn The Torpedoes.

But if you're a Petty fan, you have to get The Live Anthology. It's almost as good as being at the concert.

Moderator Action: Stop bickering about who is a real fan and who is not.

Since Red Door seems to be as ardent in his passion for Petty as Aimee is, he is an asset to this thread.

However, Aimee and the genuineness of her being a fan is not the subject of this thread, so please continue on the subject of Tom Petty.

Can I tell another story. I have plenty of good Petty stories. That are true.

OK, here's an unsolicted true story. :)

In 1989, during the first part of the Strange Behavior tour, well Tom had his own tour bus and the Heartbreakers had their own tour bus. Well anyways they found out that the tour bus had a garbage chute that emptied into a giant trash can in the luggage area. So one night, after a show (July 5, 1989 at the Miami Arena in Miami, FL), they ate Chinese food and used the chute a lot.

So anyways the next morning, at 5 a.m., they're awakened to check into the hotel (The Don Cesar in St. Petersburg, FL) and receive the news that the garbage can had not been installed and there was Chinese food all over the luggage.

I found this 1995 poster, which is ... um ... interesting?

I'm not exactly sure what it's supposed to mean. Maybe whoever designed the poster mixed it up with an art exhibition.

I still have more stories to tell.

Funny story.

The Don CeSar is actually located on St. Pete Beach.

It is quite a landmark around here. It was built in 1928 when you still needed a boat to get there from St. Pete. For decades, it was the first thing boaters in the Gulf Of Mexico would see as they approached land, and it has always been painted that shade of pink. It was particularly famous just after it opened. The Yankees used it as their base for Spring traning for 3 years during the depression. It was bought by the Army during WWII and turned into a convalescent hospital. Then it became a VA administration center. When the VA finally moved out to a more central location, it was almost demolished. But a local hotel owner finally bought it and turned it back into a hotel.

And for you Tom Petty fans, he made a music video there in 1985.

Oops, I stand corrected. (I was going off memory there.)

Actually, I'm pretty sure the Don Cesar is where TP&HB performed their Southern Accents "rooftop concert." Hold on a sec, will check.

EDIT: Yup, although it's spelled "Don Ce Sar": http://thepettyarchives.squareserve.org/magazine/magazines-1985/1985-06-20-rollingstone/

There's a little bit of video existing from the show, appears on a Southern Accents documentary that appeared on MTV ~1985 or so.

If you look at the "References in popular culture" on the Wikipedia page it mentions TP&HB! Except it wasnt a music video but the rooftop concert thing.

Actually, here's the documentary I was talking about. Note that the description says 1986 -- Probably a typo as I've seen references to it in 1985.

EDIT: Interesting thing about the performances in the documentary is the version of "Dogs on the Run." I've heard other concert versions of them, but they were slowed down, almost country-like. This is the only version I've heard at the original speed.

I forgot to mention something hilarious. Watch the documentary during "Dogs on the Run" (it's near the end). In the middle of a song, a police officer that is probably twice as wide as Tom and has a huge stomach walks up to the band and suddenly they all stop playing. I don't know why but I always found that image hilarious. It's around the 29-minute mark I think if you want to skip to it.

OK, here's another story involving the Don CeSar/Ce-Sar/however it's spelt. I copied it verbatim from the article because the wording is so funny :)
[Mike] Campbell, [Benmont] Tench, and [Howie] Epstein ogle the extra-healthy young things frolicking by the pool and pick up a few rays. (“I’ve lost my credibility as a musician,” moans Tench, showing off the little color he’s acquired.)

Red Door, what were they like Live? I have found some bands so much better live, and others dissapointing. RHCP for example were terrible, but the Foo's rocked out!

Sigh :(

I agree. The Dead are a perfect example of this. Their studio stuff is 80% crap and not worth listening to, but they are one of the top 5 live acts there ever was imo. My dad said that Petty was a real treat to hear live. He had this electrifying energy that just simply wasn't capturable in the studio. Listening to the Wolfgang's Vault stuff, I'd be inclined to agree with him.

I'm feeling left-out.

What year was the concert you went to? Gives a better idea of what questions to ask.

Well the thread is meant to ask me T.P. questions, so ...
