Asperger's Syndrome

Is it something that you feel compelled to do? Are there times or social situations when you do it more than usual?

I'd say it's not something that one is compelled to do, but rather just one get's the feeling to do it. I can't explain it properly, I don't feel forced to do it, I just feel like doing it. (Running in my case instead of hand-flapping)

As for when; Either when I'm a) bored and have absolutely nothing to do, b) I'm upset, frustrated or stressed about something, c) I'm particularly happy or excited about something.

b and c might seem contradictory, but that's just how it is with me.

Edit: As a side note; while I'm running I usually have the habit of creating fictional stories in my mind (fantasy, or otherwise). Does anyone else do something similiar?

I run while handclapping. BEAT THAT! :nya:

Yep, my mind is steaming with fictional stuff while doing that. It often involves me as the chairman of Sweden, somehow. And Sweden tends to invade the US, somehow.

It just got me thinking. The most awesome guy on Earth must either be a Swede, an Atheist or an Asperger. And they must be on CFC. Wait a minute, if there was such a person with all those traits...

Actually it confirms what I've observed in my daughter. She began hand-flapping at an early age (accompanied by jumping up and down), and it was clearly when she was excited. However, now - although she still does it when excited - it is more pronounced when (with hindsight) she was anxious about something.

Knowing this is helpful to me; having a clear indication of when something is troubling her will help to prevent small problems becoming big ones.

One further thing that I'd like to ask is, at what age did you all become aware, or were made aware that you had AS?

I have not told my daughter because I cannot find a compelling reason to do so. She is happy in all aspects of her life, including school. I don't think that she sees herself as different from the other children, although she is aware that she is 'shy' (her word). Of course, this will change as she gets older but right now doesn't seem the time.

What do you think? Would you have wanted to know at four?

I was sort of aware of some difference between me and other by the age of four, as my parents took me into therapy quite regularly. And I'm thankful to them for that, they forgot about their own careers in order for me to have an easier life in the future. And let me tell you, said therapy helped a lot, for one it allowed me to overcome most of my own shyness and anxiety in social situations.

I became aware of my condition at the age of five, I remember that I was told about it by my parents. It actually was a sort of weight off my mind, as that provided me with a clear reason for the therapy which i had been going to.

I continued to attend said therapy until fifth grade, I think. Without it, I think I'd have less friends and wouldn't be able to function in certain situations. This is supported by my own memories from the when I was five or six, I was attending therapy then as well, but I hadn't yet managed to get along with others properly. I'm resonaly sure that I learned to cope with people partially due to the therapy I had.

Do any of you watch "Boston Legal?" One of the characters - Jerry - has Aspergers. I had heard of it before seeing it on the show, but really didn't know much about it. I just wonder - is the portrayal very accurate?

Tentatively diagnosed with AS around age 6-7, although we poked at ADD and I tried using Ritalin until around age 10 when we were sure.

Probably not. I suggest you tell her when you think she can understand it properly.

wait a minute, I got aspergers, Erik has aspergers, Xanikk has, Sirdanilot has and bill3000. Hold on, is there an connection with playing civ and aspergers? ;)
Yep, there certainly is. See, with Civilization, and more generally with the internet, you create a world of your own. And that's exactly what a lot of asperger people want to have. It's kind of a 'shelter' really.

According to a study that I read last night, 1 in 200 people have AS, so statistically we could expect around 180 members with it.

Assuming this was a random sample of the population, which it certainly is not.

It's dangerous reading about these conditions, now I'm thinking maybe I have Aspbergers too. Some of the indicators describe me well, such as handflapping when I was younger, obsession with very narrow subjects of interesst, below ideal social skills, etc.

Maybe I should have my brain scanned, there was some way to check for this condition, right?
