It looks a tough map in terms of terrain and good places to place cities.

Your first four cities form a line almost towards other side of island. Further away a city is from capital the higher the cost. Although to be fair not many great locations for cities. On higher levels this may not be cost effective.

Your expansion at start seems slightly slow. I normally take a tree chopping approach with minimal defences till 2500-2000bc when barbarians start to be a issue in fog areas. The AI never really attack early on. 4 cities by 1800bc is normally possible in my games. I then either go for military units and or improving land with cottages to expand further. I normally dedicate 1-2 cities building units once i have 4+ cities. Pends on your strategy. If your going to attack all out why not all cities. ;)

I was looking at number of units you have produced. you only built 8 axemen or so? Perhaps 9 swordsmen. If your a war mongerer this seems rather low. esp if you use whipping to build units faster.

Come prince and monarch levels the Ai troops level will be much larger.

It is hard to judge a game based on 1900ad+. Try posting a game at 1ad or 2000bc. A good start leads to a strong finish.

This would actually be better in Strategies & Tips. Moved.

I have to run so I didn't get a chance to look at this too much, but I did notice one thing that surprised me. You don't understand the medic promotion at all. Look at your troops in Egypt. About half of them have medic I promotion. You only need one medic per stack and he will heal all of your units. The bonus is not cumulative so you are wasting precious promotions doing this. Next time either promote them for combat or city defense.

Also that's a really whacky looking map. I would've attacked Isabella earlier in the game since she's right under you. She always founds some early religions and builds shrines and overall neglects her military.

Cheers guys,

Fair comment on the medic 1 promotion.

The problem I had was I was on the top island with cyrus but took him out really really early, because he had much better city placement potential than me consequently I couldn't tech trade with him and as a result I was miles behind by the time I had beelined for optics.

In terms of Isabella, I was virtually forced to take on Hatsheput first because she was miles in front on the tech race so I ganged up with Isabella to nail her until she was behind (I dind't have the cash or the infrastructure for a prolonged conflict and her infantry/marines were turning up when I still had red coats.)

Keep the suggestions coming.

I was a bit surprised you were still using horse archers and knights. These units are probably not very useful in the age you're now in. I'd consider deleting them all or upgrading them if that's more your style (I usually prefer to delete because upgrades are expensive). The reason I reccommend this is because usually obsolete units are not worth the upkeep (costs) they require.

I would reccomend building cottages more often rather than farms. If you usually automate workers this may be an issue. Especially with a financial leader like Victoria, and considering the civics you've employed (well chosen by the way), you should build more cottages when you can. People frequently call this a cottage economy (CE). By doing this you'd have substantially increased your income and probably reached the tech level you're at now much earlier. The alternative is to go for a Specialist Economy (SE)where you build farms and usually no cottages at all, and employ specialists to do your research etc. The SE and CE have different pros and cons but in general you should try to stick to one or the other. For your type of gameplay I think CE is best.

As a general rule of thumb, try to avoid settling cities that are 1 tile away from coast. You lose a lot of productivity from the coast tiles then.

In general, your cities are too spread out (on your main land). Plains are not so bad but unused grassland is a terrible shame. Cottaged grassland is very valuable, and even just 2 or 3 tiles of grassland is enough to justify building another city. Think more about your city placement earlier on to try and utilise all the land you have. It's more important to use what you have than worry about cities overlapping. In particular, a lot of grassland around Nottingham has been wasted.

It's also great to see you don't have a case of wonder addiction!

Another tip, since you have the Kremlin, you should use rush buying whenever you can. It's hard to tell but you may have been doing this already, since you do seem to have quite an income. With the Kremlin, rush buying is very powerful and actually more effective than building using hammers.

EDIT Actually for the rush buying strategy, it might go without saying but you should have production multipliers like forges, factories, power plants etc. in the cities you rush in for best effect.
