Speaking for the Māori, there are a few potential things you could do. The most likely options are either something related to the Kiingitanga, such as Tuurangawaewae, or a specific Pā (but I'm not entirely sure which one would be best just yet. There's a few that are famous for battles, like Ruapekapeka or Gate Pā (the latter of which was the single most devastating defeat the British had during the New Zealand Wars), but they're probably less impressive as a Pā than some of the bigger ones at Kaiapoi or Maungakiekie. A wildcard could also be the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, but that might be a bit weird since that's only prominent because of an international treaty.
They might have not realized who Whina Cooper was. If they had I don't think they would have said that. Curious that the file uses her English name, and not the Māori name she was born with.
Honestly I think it'd be more odd if they used her te reo name - whaea Whina is overwhelmingly known by the name Whina Cooper, by Pākehā and Māori alike. It's even the name of the movie about her.
I wonder if they could add new Ages that don't change your units as an in-between Age. Literally called Eras instead. You don't lose your units and there are other techs to pad out the tree. You could slap eras into the Ages by locking techs and then you wouldn't need to switch.
Transitional Eras. It would be nice if theses smaller tumultuous ages started when entering a crisis and lasted a few turns (25-50) where you would try to get things under control and then transition to the next age at the end of them. This way it would feel more natural than automatic.
I would assume the Modern Age civ would be Sweden. That means it could go Norse>Iceland>Sweden.
Iceland never regained full independence until WWII after they were under the Kingdom of Norway in the late Middle Ages.
I wonder if Iceland and the Pirates just get very emblematic but "normal" wonders instead of specific buildings, e.g., a "Village with Turf Houses" (in Icelandic, of course) and the "Harbor of Tortuga" (assuming that Tortuga will be on the city list, otherwise it could also just be Tortuga à la Machu Pikchu).
Taputapuātea would absolutely be a great choice for a wonder, but not for the Māori. Raʻiātea (where Taputapuātea is located) is ~3,700km away from New Zealand, and while it's one of the likely candidates for where Polynesian settlers set off from to get to New Zealand it doesn't really have much connection with Māori identity once that developed as its own thing in Aotearoa.

Some interesting picks there, if this turns out to be future DLC content.
Whina Cooper and a modern Māori civ make a lot of sense. Likewise Tonga as an exploration civ has been speculated for some time.
I am all for a pirate leader, and Blackbeard is a good choice (I’d have also liked Zheng Yi Sao). Weird to see him alongside Sayyida al-Hurra who was a privateer.
I think a pirate civ is a bad choice though, it’s just a gimmick. It only makes sense insofar as we have Treasure Ships to plunder. Everything else about the Exploration Age, building wonders, researching tech, spreading religion, building land armies? Feels quite silly. It would also be annoying if the very first civ ever from the entire Caribbean was the extremely short-lived “pirate republic” and not, say Haiti, Cuba or the Taíno.
If they don't get a "Flying Gang" unique great people (Benjamin Hornigold, Charles Vane, John "Calico Jack" Rackham, Anne Bonny, Mary Read etc.) what would be the point?
I'm not surprised about the Atomic Era, it's a no-brainer from a marketing point of view move to bring new customers from contemporary nations. I think that believing that we will not have a 3rd age transition with brand new civs is naive, but who knows, I could be wrong. A lot of people here are vocal against it, but if there's something I learned through civ iterations is that civfanatics is not representative of the market as a whole. Not better, not worse, just different.
I'm having a blast in the Modern Era. Looking forward to the 4th one!
I may well eat my hat if the Ottomans aren't hanging out with the Mughals in Modern - there's no one else that make sense (outside Iran) for the Middle East 1750-1950. Whereas pre-1500 you can't throw a perfectly inoffensive cherry blossom in the Middle East without hitting a Turkic empire, including a *lot* of heavy hitters - Seljuk, Timurids, the works. Not to mention Byzantium, Armenia, etc, who all want to represent that same area too.
Positive
+ Very excited for the Tonga and the Maori, both of which are fantastic picks for a Polynesian stack.
+ The Ottomans will also be a fantastic addition we have been seriously missing, hopefully for the Modern Age.
+ Edward Teach (Blackbeard) and Sayyida al Hurra both sound super cool and I would love to play either.
+ I am hesitantly optimistic about a Pirate Republic.
Mixed
~ Iceland is a cool addition, but not a replacement for other Scandinavian representation imo. I still very much want to see a Danish Exploration Civ, and a Swedish Modern Civ. That said if Iceland is Modern and we still get the Danes, I will be OK. But it seems the theming is more Iceland Exploration which would be pretty unsatisfying if it meant we didn't get a Denmark/Norway civ. That said, like with Bulgaria. If we get a Bulgaria AND Byzantines, then Bulgaria is fantastic. If we get a Iceland and a Norway/Denmark, then I would LOVE Iceland Exploration, but it all depends on if its blocking out a more reasonable Viking Exploration civ.
~ Atomic age is fine if they are just extending Age 3, or if Age 4 doesn't have new civs, but I really don't want a whole age of new civs right now. Maybe in 2-3 years from now, but not right now. I was already lukewarm on Civ switching, and 3 switches feels like enough. I don't want more. I want more Civs for the three ages we have.
Negative
- Whina Cooper does not excite me whatsoever, there is lots of great historical Polynesian picks and this feels super meh to me. I hope they portray her in her younger years as opposed to older though. Moderator Action: Removed some lines. Keep political statements out of the gaming forums-AH
I like Tonga and Maori joining the Civ roster. I'm ambivalent about Whina Cooper, if they wanted a female Polynesian leader, they could've gone with Nafanua, Salamasina, Kaahumanu, or even Purea.
Sayyida is also another good leader choice.
Seeing Pirates and Blackbeard reminds me of "I come strapped with six pistols and a dagger. Walk under the black flag with the scallywag swagger! Ain't no parrot on my shoulder and no rings in my ear. I'm an irate pirate; real swashbuckling buccaneer!" and Assassin Creed Black Flag (where Blackbeard gave a sad speech before his death). I wasn't really asking for them.
Iceland seems like an outside the box choice for a "Viking" Civ, but did they did much raiding and pillaging in Europe? I still want Denmark and Sweden.
I would assume the Modern Age civ would be Sweden. That means it could go Norse>Iceland>Sweden.
Iceland never regained full independence until WWII after they were under the Kingdom of Norway in the late Middle Ages.
I think you are probably right... That would make it Norse (Antiquity) - Iceland (Exploration) - Sweden (Modern) - and possibly Denmark for Atomic Age..
Modern Denmark's focus would probably be on the social democratic wellfare state, international neutrality, Danish design and possibly "hygge" or something like that.
I don't know about the connected leader. If it was Modern, I would definitely go for Thorvald Stauning, but he died in 1942, so unless they move the start of Atomic era to the interbellum, I don't see that working. It could be an architect or designer. If it had to be a politician Anker Jørgensen seems the most appropriate choice.
As for the associated wonder, it could be the municipal hall in Århus, or maybe the art museum Lousiana, but the Kingo houses probably fit most with the theme.. The most famous buildings Danish architects designed are outside of Denmark.
Although, I will still hold out hope for a Denmark-Norway exploration age civ... or possibly the Kalmar Union under Margrethe I.
