At random points can't engage religious combat against specific Civ's

I've had this happen in two games now, where out in the open religious units are battling it out but then inexplicably one of the AI Civ's will become immune to attack. Not sure if this is a bug or a 'feature' but couldn't find anyone else mentioning it with a google search.

Here's a screenshot of it in action:

I'd been hitting Germany's missionaries at this spot for a while, but now I select my apostle, have as clear a path to the missionary as you can get, right click on it... and nothing happens. In the screenshot that's the second German missionary that made it through to Yeraterenburg in that manner. Meanwhile a little further down there's a Sumerian apostle I had no problem hitting.

I know you can't attack a religious unit if their on a military unit or in a city center/district, but the ones here are clearly out in the open.

(Edit: Just read the sticky and see a few things missing, will get those up shortly)

Have you already converted a German city? If so, then the German AI is perfectly content to keep on pumping up missionaries and apostles from it, even though they will have your religion. And of course, your apostles won't attack a missionary of your own religion.

Yes that would certainly explain it! I never even thought of that, as there's no indication to the faith of the unit and the unhuman like behaviour of the AI to just keep pumping out faith units the same way and wasting them on cities already fully converted. This had been driving me crazy!

No clear indication of the faith of the religious unit is probably bad enough to be considered a bug. (it is apparently available on a mouseover tooltip..but it should be part of the icon)

I'm having the same problem. I'm Pastafarian and I'm trying to attack a Protestant apostle with two of my own, but it's invulnerable and from a civilization I've never attacked.

Yeah, I don't know what's going on. I was just able to attack them on their territory on land, but once they moved into the water, they were again untouchable. Makes no sense.

Have notice this in my games, can never attack from water to water, but can land to water. If you still have that turn saved try attacking with either of your land based units if they can reach the missionary.
