Augusto Pinochet Has Died

Good riddance.

He was one of those guys who I thought would live forever, much like Fidel Castro or Roberto Marinho (brazilians know the latter).

I cant beileve i never heard of this guy.

Old Augusto is among the last of a dying breed...I'm sure plenty of people will be happy he is gone.

.

Say all the bad things you want about him, Lord knows he deserves the criticism. But also remember that he helped hold the line against Communism in South America.

Anyone else could of done it. He was a dictator and a bad one of that.

Good riddance, and it bugs me he lived to be 91.

Dictators seem to have longevity in history.

Look at fidel and genghis khan. :D

Genghis khan lived to be almost 80 and that was extreme for the way he lived.

Wow. Is that all you can think of? A brutal dictator who overthrew a democratically elected leader, and all you can say is that it's better than the democratically elected socialist?

He was an awful leader, and those who try to rationalize saying that somehow Allende would be worse just because he was following a different economic system than the Holy American Empire are fooling themselves.

Well spoken. Except for the holy american empire part.

Yes, it is indeed not mentioned enough that Latin America (and also Spain) were between a rock and a hard place.

As bad as Pinochet, Franco, Videla and co. were, communist regimes would have been even worse, just look at Cuba where far more people were executed.

Of course this does not justify, at all, the mass killing carried by Pinochet, but it's very important to keep in mind that the Latin American left who fought the dictatorships and is internationally regarded as heroes are in fact villains worse than the ones they fought. They were not fighting for liberty but rather for servilism to Moscow.

Should had been executed for his crimes years ago.

Well better late than never.

I think trying to compare which one is or could have been "worse" is little bit insulting towards the victims of Pinochet.

The deep crisis that Allende put Chile into also suggests that catastrophe was coming. There was food shortage in Santiago. But hey, as long as he is a socialist it's all OK.

I too strongly support punishing the military dictators of South America, and revoking the Amnesty Laws. As long, of course, that the left-wing terrorists are also persecuted. Why is it that people only want to punish one side?

For dictators, the grim reaper is the ultimate war crimes court.

Hrm, I don't think I said that. Let's check...

I was right, I didn't say that!

And his embrace of structural adjustment destroyed the Chilean economy.

Let's not give him praise in economic matters either.

He ****ed up in everyway imaginable.
