Augustus - the forbidden combination?

You are going to build the heroic epic if you are going to fight modern wars or are fighting no wars at a time so your best production city can build it, if you are fighting all the time and plan to end your game in the reniscance era or earlier it is not very good however... Just calculate the hammers needed for it to be worth it...

I think the forum is a fairly unimpressive building. 1/4 of Philosophical compared to the full bonus of CHA, EXP or CRE some buildings give.
Granted, Phi has an excellent primary bonus and is lacking someone in the secondary part (cheaper universities), but it's not worth 4 times that of the other named traits.

Agreed, but bear in mind that there's sort of a diminishing return on GPP, because the more GP you make, the more expensive the next one is. So yeah, even though 1/4 of philosophical may sound bad compared say all of CHA, you'll still be getting more GPs, so the overall benefit is probably closer to ~half of philosophical. And, as has been pointed out, industrious/philosophical is just too powerful.

Industrious is a great warmongering trait. Mainly because it lets you build wonders which help you support your economy for extensive warmongering later. With a good set of early wonders and the great people they produce (including those priests!) you can run representation early and keep science coming even with the slider at 0%.

Its at least as good an economic trait as organized - on a par with Financial in terms of what it lets your economy do IMO.

The only trick is not to get so focussed on building wonders that the AI have longbows before you launch your Praet attack. However beelining construction and sending catapults with your Praets makes your later attack all the more devastating when it comes.

I started an Augustus game this week just for the hell of it.

Who needs Cats???? I can easily take down a 50% cultural defense HILLED city with 6 Praets or less. Most have CRI, some at CRII. I've already done it twice this game. Defenders are archers, swordsman, axemen and chariots.

Heroic epic before 1000BC makes for some nasty elite units.
