Axemen too strong too early?

archers are 3/5. Crap unless they're fortified in your city, which means your enemy can merrily pillage all your farms, SR, and cottages while his are running just fine.

Firstly, you will need to learn to balance development with military strength. Cottages, Farms, and Mines are useless if you do not have the units to defend them. A few Raging Barbarian games would get that lesson through rather quickly.

Archers are viable, and so is turtling with Archers against a rush. If your opponent did rush to Axemen, then chances are he doesn't have the technologies for Farms and Cottages. He is relying entirely on an early conquest to give him a lasting advantage. As I mentioned in my previous post (which you seem to have completely ignored), Archers can be used with Council of Elder and Marketplaces (+ specialists) to keep your economy strong enough to withstand his rush. If you buff up your warriors enough by fighting animals, you won't need Archers to turtle.

Why worry about Axmen anyway? Ive warrior rushed my last two games to get a second or third capital. If your opponent is going to axe you then just preemptivly warrior rush him. If you cant pull that off fortify your warriors in defensive terrain around his capital so he can get hammers from hills and forrests. In a duel you can keep that up, make your opponent mad, and teck and build freely till him getting axes is a laugh. Literely, the best defence is the best offence. In FFH you simply cant neglect your military. At very least reserch copper if your at risk.
I cant say much though, I just won a domination where I used nothing but warriors till I had conjurers, my God King capital built 1 per turn for about 150 turns while my conquests sustained my economy.

I agree. The warrior rush is a very viable option in FFH, and I've been using it so well lately I feel like it's a little exploitave. If you know in advance that your opponent is likely to try to axe rush you, then just end their game with an early warrior rush.

Just finish a Monarch game, and Warrior rush is far more exploitve in FFH than it was in BTS. In BTS high level AI got free archers, the first strikes made a archer rush invalid. Monarch Warrior rush is still very nice to get a second or third capital.

Yeah, I'm come to the realisation that archers are not the answer at the moment because they take more beakers to reach than even the axemen do.
From a thematical/historical perspective this seems a little strange.

Out of curiosity, what speed/difficulty are you and your opponent playing on?

normal speed. It's worse in some ways on epic, since speed changes seem to affect building times for structures more than they do units.

I always have thought it odd that military builds could be made so fast.
