AZ-05: Dan Quayle Challenge

the DP with Hammurabi was available before the one with Pericles (he teched it first). That's why I took it when I saw it. Feel free to cancel it if you want.

I think we're close to the point of turning off research and just spamming rifles for power + spies to slow down the AI. Oh and don't pick up economics unless you plan on teching more - it's a worthless tech for us since we have castles in all of our major cities.

And forcing Pericles to cut deals will not make Pericles hate the other AI - it just makes the other AI hate Pericles. So if you want Pericles to end up in a war, we actually have to cut the DP with Pericles to bribe somebody else into attacking him...

It will, because he will no longer have the "+2 Our Open Borders have brought our people closer together" towards Hammurabi. Try it out yourself.

hey guys sorry about the absence... i really miss summer when i could endlessly play civ4... anyway I'm back but i won't be available for a few days thanks to homework and theater etc.

Here's some interesting info I came across:

Apparently we can just never tech MM and the AP will remain effective even if the UN is built! So we just have to turtle up and win the game before an AI launches. This doesn't sound too hard now does it?

Edit:

That details how we can abuse the AP to slow down the pace of this game. Spread christianity to a civ or two and start holy wars

oh this was sooooooo exciting!

i don't know where to start. or where to end either... this was perhaps the most boring turnset i've ever played and i'm looking forward to more of the same sort.
I have a feeling that Dan Quayle will stand idly by watching the world change whilst he clings to old standards.

all in all 15 turns, some rifles and a few prisons to get the +50% espionage bonus since that's what we are spending our money on nowadays. On the last turn we generated a GM in Washington.

i think that we could end up sabotaging quite some spaceshipbuilds with the points we accumulate over the years, which is a good thing since no one seems likely to start a war in this game (I miss shaka and montezuma, those guys would have gone to war for a penny)

i took some pictures as well, aren't they stylish?

ok, now i remember what they were for.
1. i made that deal
2. we caught quite some spies

do we want to finish democracy and communism for the bonus to espionage? Or are we racking up enough points as it is that it doesn't matter? I'll try taking a look at the save later today...

I would like to force the AI into non-OR religious civics once they all have SM and then spread Christianity to their crappiest city so that we can line-up an AP victory (and also leave open the possibility of protecting ourself via AP peace declarations). As long as we bribe them into non-OR civics, they won't be able to spread Christianity on their own so our majority will still prevail. Plus it'll give us an idea of what pop size we need to maintain.

sounds reasonable, but i think that with the slider at 80% we should generate enough points to force them into changing civics.

i played, but i am afraid that this isn't going to be an exciting report. Nothing happened at all. i did two things:

1. build spies
2. use the spies to undermine Pericles (not very successfully i may add)

I was going to play today, but aborted because I have little idea what we're planning to do.

The spies accomplish almost nothing, about the only useful thing we can do is try and blow up Pericles' towns (semi-exploity). Anything else is not worth it because too many spies getting caught will give us hefty diplo penalties. We are also losing the culture battle and the fortress line will probably end up being in Greece eventually.

How much of the population do you think we need to win the AP vote? Maybe one AI can be made to vote for us (Pericles?). Should we backfill some more cities just to be on the safe side? We can always starve them if they turn out to be unnecessary. Population also adds to power, making us less suspectible to attacks. I have a feeling that simply spamming rifles till the 21th century is not the correct thing to do here.

How do we prevent the AIs from grabbing a cultural victory? Sabotage?

I looked at the save. All of the civs are basically unwilling to declare on anybody else because of the double and triple DPs that everybody has signed. We should sign a DP with Joao and then just sit back and relax... We can then spread christianity once the AI start building spaceship parts and win the game sometime in the late 1900's - early 2000's. ON good news, our score is now only a mere 55k.

We don't need any more pop. We can probably play the diplomacy game better than the AI can (for gathering AP votes) so I wouldn't worry too much about not having enough pop to win. The friendly civs will definitely vote for us.

Pericles is the AI with the most culture and he doesn't have any towns = he can't really attempt a cultural victory.

Edit: all of the AIs are in OR so spreading christianity to any civ that is not friendly with us is not a good idea.

We're losing the culture fight, so I queued up some temples in the border towns. I also cranked culture up to 70% for a while to see if we can regrab some of the lost tiles.

Philadelphia's tile distribution was :smoke:.

Turn 0: Made DP with Joaoaoaoao.

Turn 4: Find a sleeping Great Merchant, send him over to Babylonia. I don't know why we're saving him, we won't ever tech far enough to start any corps. Might as well cash in the chips.

Turn 5: The cultural pressure is really irritating. I decide to grab Liberalism so that we can go into Free Speech. It's good that people are allowed to say what is in their mind, even if they're not allowed to say it out loud.

Turn 11: Thanks to the GM we now have an army of 52 riflemen. I revolt into Free Speech + Mercantilism. We could use the culture boost, and losing the trade routes hurts the AIs more than it does us. America stands alone, but it stands alone together with its friends.

Turn 12: Hammurabi completes Broadway.

Turn 13: There is an uncultured tundra tile on our lands. I'm sending a settler there. Don't settle it unless the AIs try to put a city there.

The AIs are catching up in EP, we can go back to the spy stuff or keep up the futile fight against culturemonger Pericles.

We have 29% of iMaxScore (Dan Quayle). Score by winning this turn = 47049 (Augustus Caesar).

Next up for imitating Dan Quayle: shyuhe.

Not much excitement. Frederick came to us demanding that we adopt Judaism. I thought about it for a while but I declined for fear of losing our DP with Pericles (which seems to be mostly in place from the +6 shared religion bonus). Joao also came looking for replaceable parts, which I gladly gave (why is he so backwards???).

The AI has merrily teched along. I saw the Christo built by Hammurabi (who appears to be the tech leader) but I also saw Pericles finish researching fission (fun stuff). The AI are mostly at assembly line - artillery - electricity in terms of research right now. I imagine they'll take another 30-40 turns to get the space race techs. Of course for NASA, space is still a high priority.

We'll probably have to start spreading Christianity at that point to prepare for our win and try to manipulate it so that the least loved AI is our opposition. Our score is still a lofty 41k. It doesn't appear to be dropping very fast :(

I don"t think liberalism was very necessary... if we lose tiles, we lose tiles. Pericles won't attack us and none of the AI will attack us as long as our two DPs with Pericles and Hammurabi remain intact. For that matter, I think going back to bureacracy is better to get the + shared civic bonus with Hammy.
