B02: God is an American

Beorn, I would like to give this a shot.

Comment: I gotta say, this is a very respectable board that puts aside idiotic complaints. It also encourages people to work together, as opposed to say.. I dunno seperating them by nationality or creed or whatever.

I think I'm going to play another civilization game.. and play as Quebec. Ooohh right, I forgot. It doesn't exist! :D

lurker's comment: I didn't play RaR yet. Can you build McD there? Does it give culture points? ;)

But you are right. 100k is the VC that fits best.
Lurker's comment: (the game is a bit too political for me)

I'm actually trying RAR, seen no McD yet (MAges), but if it exists I guess that the citizens eat 4 food in cities and produce half the shields :D

Arabia 3 looks good to these old eyes. (Is that butter on those hills?) Lots of shields, no food bonuses, bit you can't have everything, and I hate floodplains.

lurker's comment: I agree with Bede on #3. That is gold, afaik, and if you move onto that gold hill, you'll have a nice supply of bonus grassland, and hills/mountains for production. You'll get a nice boost in research from the start on, as settling on that hill will give you 4 or 5 commerce, I think.

FYI, modern tech has these thingies called "glasses". They're available in the IA. Of course after laser, you could go for lasik... ;) this will be fun to lurk

#3 is an interesting start with all that gold there  . If we go with that one, I'd go with GA's idea to settle on top. The negative to that start is no food bonus.

I'm more a fan of big food, so Babylon 2 is what I'd be more fond of, though I'll admit 4 golds in our vicinity fits in rather well.

Sure Bigfoot, official roster now will be:

Meteor Punch <= Up in Arab 3
Bigfoot <= On deck

Soul Warrior
Bede
Beorn

About generalities, do we go for a republic slingshot? Do we make ourselves a granary first (I think it would be wisest, given our shield output and our indus worker)? Do we scout in circle around ourselves first?
Do we build and whip early temples for 1-2 citizens?

rep slinger - i like it but would we get both CoL and Phil first? try to buy CoL seems more prudent.
first granary? i would scout a bit then decide.

my first game with brother bede! [party]

4000 settler moves to gold hills and worker mines in place. The scout on the mountain spot Ivory - very good.
3950 - while checking the science screen, I spill some coffee on the keyboard :coffee:
- omg! alphabet set at 10%: 50 turns+5gpt, alphabet set at 100% 29 turns! breaking even. Thank you, gold hill. Of course, three of our rivals start with Alphabet...
3900 The Teoihuacan tribe teaches us Ceremonial Burial.
3850
3800
3750 The Saxon tribe teaches Warrior Code.
3700
3650
3600
3550 25 gold from a tribe whos name will be forgotten from history.
3500
3450
3400 Meet a Russian scout. They won't trade us bronze working for masonry.
3350
3300
3250
3200
3150
3100
3050 stopped 1 turn short.

- Washington is at pop2,3 turns to grow. It will complete settler in one(actually 3 though), or granary in 7.
- Above Washington, in the Ivory river area would be a great place for a granary city. The granary built with chopped wood.
- the next in line may go, I just wanted to see if we're going settler or granary first.
Attempted dot map:

Isn't it fitting that Russia is our first big rival?

Looks like a good turnset there, Meteor! Got it.

I am at work so I haven't really looked at this yet. A couple of things though, since we are going for 100K I would favor a more compact build pattern (cXXc). It is easier to accumulate culture that way. Also, I have to see if Washington can be MM to grow and complete the settler on the same turn. My preference is to pump out a settler in Washington first, and then build a granary there. We can then settle by the ivory, and probably go warrior => rax for that city (using a forest chop to speed the rax). Unless the team objects, I will proceed along those lines.

I was dissappointed in my turns :( . There is no way to MM to get more food, so it's basically granary in 7 or settler in 3.

I forgot we were going for 100k, which will be a learning experience for me, so dissregard my dots.

We need to build closer than the dotmap indeed, how about on the closest ivory, 1-SW of the current dotted one?

My pick goes with granary first. We have low food surroundings, and I would call it pushing our luck to finish the settler already.

Good point about the food Beorn, building the granary first saves us 5 turns of population growth. However, that also means we won't get our first settler out for another 12-13 turns (about 10 turns later than the 'settler first' approach), during which time our second city could be up and running.

As for the city location, 1 SW of the current dot is a possibility, although our units would have to cross the river getting between Washington and NY (not as good for defense). Another possibility is to put the next city NE-NE-NE from Washington, and the third one N-N-N from Washington (maintains cXXc spacing to both cities, and is on the lake and by the ivory).

BTW, is this set for raging barbs?

I'd buy NNN and NW NW NW any time.

I think they would all fit here [pimp]

Be careful settling too close in the first ring of towns. Once the first ring hedge is built is the time to start cramming them in. Also, don't whip early culture, or at least not in the first ring.

The ideal I have found for a 100K victory is five or six strong and very productive cities, domination style warfare until we control the continent, then start cramming the culture.

Most enlightening, I don't think we have that kind of experience, thanks :hatsoff:

Still, I like the N-N-N or N-N-NE position for the early ivory. Other than that, I'll go with loosening as you said.

Meteor's dot map is pretty serviceable actually. I would be tempted to go three straight north of the capitol for the first town, then knight's moves east and west of there.
