Maybe someone who's playing can be the judge if that's hideously overpowered. It's a nerfed philosophical with a free great scientist in there.

NOT OVERPOWERED. When I played them it gave me an academy but towards the end of the game I was still coming in second or third in science. On price. But I'm a casual player andstayed small.

Playing against them they stayed fairly small and though they were great research pact partners they were really weak and coming third in science.

So its situational. I'm sure someone will dominate with it at some point. But my first two games they didn't. so not overpowered in my book (though my first impression was the same)

i like it. worth teh deluxe pack. i like walls, i like archers (bowmen :P) and i like scientists.

^^ Nebby!

That is the most glorious beard I think I've ever seen.

You should hear his voice. It's the same deep, burly and grizzled sort of thing that you'd imagine with a beard like that.

From my experience, the Bowmen are squishy. One or two spearmen can route you. Keep at least a few melee units with them to protect them.
But bowmen are no *more* squishy than Warriors. Less so, because the warrior takes damage when it attacks, whereas the bowman doesn't. I agree that you'd eventually want some spearmen once you had them, but otherwise bowman spam seems entirely reasonable.

any unit that has a ranged attack value, ONLY uses ranged attacks, so they cannot take cities, though they can drop them to 1hp so a warrior could take it then
So what? That still isn't an argument for building more warriors (you only need one), or for being unable to use massed bowmen when on strategic attack.

Were you running a specialist economy with a ton of scientist specialists to maximize the GPP boost bonus, and lightbuilding key techs for military advantage?

Nope. But I admit I'm not a person that gets satisfaction from winning the game and going for victories. I like the fight and the satisfaction of building a functional empire.

But you cant really run a specialist economy like civ4 you have to build buildings for specialist and they cost money which can cripple you. then there is happiness you have to worry about or your growth stagnates. And lightbulbing techs doesnt always pan out. I definetely was cranking on GS but over the span of the game I got a few techs but mostly built academies. Then my neighbors became aggressive and priorities shifted. greatly.

Which language does he speak? I hope, that not arabic...

Maybe kaldean? But this is a dead language like egypt.

hideously overpowered ability. congrats to firaxis for breaking their own game with the first extra content

Gotta agree, Babylon will be the "financial" of Civ 5 based on this ability. This is ludicrously op.

Babylon isn't as OP as you might think - having played them and Japan/Russia, I still prefer either of the two. Bowmen get obsolete fast even on Epic speed, and Great People come much slower than in Civ IV.

I must say, I'm glad for having ordered the Deluxe edition now. When myself and the other non-Yankee peasants get to fire up the game on Friday, Babylon will be one of my first ports of call ;)

Personally, I don't think they're overpowered - it's a strong trait, but certainly not gamebreaking. And, glancing at this thread, it seems that the people who've actually played the Deluxe edition are in agreement :)

I'm working on babylon at king difficulty atm, and its a strong ability. Including the one from writing I've gotten I think 7 GS and I'm about to move into modern age. Since it seems a GS can grab any tech no matter the beaker cost I've saved up my last 3 to grab spaceship techs. I can't open the save to check right now but I was well over 100 science in babylon (3 academies, scientists, and every multiplier but observatory).

I started in isolation. Arabia is grabbing land like crazy on the other continent and has a big score but I know they're behind me in tech because of the era notifications (wish could actually see what they have...)

And the bowmen are really good barb sweepers. Also I took a (non-militaristic) city state with 1 bowman and 1 warrior. The city was dumb and bombarded my fortified warrior in the forest; gave it 1 dmg a turn while it sat there and healed. Bowman slowly took out its life.
