Balancing a map for multiplayer no AI

Me and my friends loves to play CIV 4 BTS, we usually run multiplayer games that last for many hours.
When it get late at night we just save it and call it at day, then we continue another day.

We never use AI’s and most games are for 4-6 players.

This is how we balance the game.

We usually play the HUB map and when we know our starting positions we divide teams.
The idea is to get 2 teams with placed next to each other in order to being able to help out when attacked. (It’s easier to plan an attack then to plan a common defense when you don’t know where to defend), having allies close to you is essential.

We don’t run pre set team because we all like to micromanage our own research.
We don’t allow tech trading or buying.

I do have some concerns about how to balance our games even more.

# Is it possible to run pre set teams and set them to begin on the same island, continent or similar?
# Is it possible to pre set teams and not share research?
# Does anyone have any good maps to recommend for such games beside “hub”.
# Is it possible to balance such a game playing 2 vs 3, we have a problem when it is 5 of us who want to play.
