Banner Ads!

Recently the banner ads have not been advertising timeshares, or webspace, but.... CONDOMS! That isn't suitable for some children...

Perhaps you could talk to Tellefragged about it! I'm not offended, but it is very odd that a Civ site advertises condoms?

The babe threads pics are often also not suitable for children, of which many are frequenting this forum. I don´t care but I can surely understand parents who will be at rage if they find their kids viewing those ads and pics. And in civil law cases loving America I wouldn´t be surprised by an accusation of overly worried parents.
Just a thought.

I was mystified too... didn't the banners originally advertise games? That makes a lot more sense to me. Someone should tell Trojan that they're not going to have much luck selling condoms to computer geeks

I was just on my way to complain about this, when I saw somebody already had. I think if I started a thread about this, it would be closed (I'm not going to test that hypothesis, btw) yet this banner ad is on your site.

PS: editing it from my post would be very amusingly hypocritical if it is not also removed from the site

That's actually a good reason the condom ads are acceptable.

IMO these condom ads are not that bad, as long as they don't put any popups on the forum. Forum popup is like the only thing I am really against...

They are fine as long as posters know they aren't a topic of discussion in civ3 forums. And they don't really need to be mentioned/discussed over there.

I have noticed that with these forums, if there is something that could be even the least bit offensive, someone will take it to the extreme and get 4-5 people banned over it. I am not offended by the condom ads, I actually consider it "good marketing tactics". The age of people playing Civilzation is also the age group that condoms are mostly marketed to, so displaying an ad on this site would generate the most results.

I am offended by pop ups, and talking ads There was also that "punch-the-monkey" ad that I found disruptive cuz even if you put your mouse over it, it acts as if you punched the guy. I am actually surprised that no environmentalists claimed that ad to be "animal cruelty". . . .

Ooh, they even give out free condoms! A random somewhat-related story: some kids at my school got in trouble for accepting free condoms on a field trip to the local university. Strange that the sex education classes we had (before they got cut from the budget) encouraged condom use, yet anyone who actually tried to do what they were taught got suspended for two days

I have to say, as a 15 year old devout Catholic, I'm rather offended, and suprised about these ads. I'm glad they've slowly disappreared, though I would appreciate it if ads of this types aren't displayed again.

Besides, if my mother was next to the computer while on of those was up, I'd have a lost of explaining to do.

The ads aren't THAT bad, but I think next time a newbie or somebody starts a thread about sex or masturbation, you're gonna hear sure as anything "but you run condom ads....." Especially when you tell them one of the reasons (IMO, one of the STRONGEST reasons) WHY you can't have such threads- because the server doesn't allow sexually explicit material.
