I've been thinking this: how sick would it be to have barbarians to continue to spawn in the later ages. Its not like bad people disappear just because you've claimed the land right?
Like in the modern ages, you get a small building appearing on a tile which houses like 5 or so guerrillas.

I was just wondering if this had been done/thought about before.

Well, you could have a Modern Age start and set the barbarians as Infantry and Tanks or something. :mischief:

I actually have done that is a couple of my mods to the game. It requires that you have some one tile islands to pre-place barbarian camps on so that they can survive to the modern period. You could use more modern units, such as the ironclad for the ship, based on the piratical exploited of the Huascar, a Peruvian ironclad that turned pirate in the course of a revolution.

Hmm, getting camps to spawn within cultural borders normally requires a nice block of mountains which do not get moved into. You would still need to probably pre-locate the barbarians, and you could not use wheeled units, but guerillas and cavalry might work. I have some other ideas, but they would probably get this thread moved to the Creation and Customization Forum. If you do not mind, I will copy your initial post and start a new thread there.

Something I recently realized is that 'barbarians' do not have the commonsense the AI possess not to attack targets they can't beat. I had barbs attacking a 17/17 cav army on a regular basis in the last GOTM. Or maybe the correct way to put it is that the barbarians are at least brave enough to die attacking hopeless targets. If the AI did this, it would be a different game. Just something to consider when you are giving the barbarians an upgrade. A barbarian uprising of guerillas might be a serious threat in the Industrial Age, etc.

That is the whole purpose of the exercise. To cause problems later in the game.

No argument from me, I was just point out that a Cav Army which might seem untouchable until tanks could get reemed by barbarians as soon as guerillas are available for them to build. The point being that it might be a bigger change then contemplated at first glance.

Also, it might make sense to have a variety of events trigger an uprising to make things really fun. Maybe every time a Civ is destroyed it triggers an uprising preprsenting the remaining citizens scattering to the wind yet refusing to be assimulated. Since I don't mod, I don't know how that would/could work. Just a thought.

Isn't there something in one of the conquests (Japan, I think) that has a major uprising occur at the begiinning of each era?

I have long thought there is potential to have barbarians graduating to terrorists with terrorist camps but I'm not expert enough to design it myself.
They could even be hidden under nationality flags and controlled by players like the privateers, as well as being completely independent at times (as happens in our world today!)

That would not be that hard to modify the game to do, and I think that I have already seen some mods that would allow that. You would need to create a terrorist unit, buidable by both the barbarians and regular civilizations, and have the advanced barbarian unit set to that. Your problem would be that you might have the Barbarian terrorist unit appearing long before the civilization one, unless you were playing a more modern period scenario.

modern barbarians are called terrorists.

I would agree with you up to a point. However, terrorist act as individuals or is small groups, and a terrorist unit is going to have different characteristics than a modern barbarian unit. Somalia could be considered a barbarian state or area, with the continued priracy the equivalent of my having the barbarian naval unit being the Privateer. The modern era barbarian group would be fielding three units, a Guerilla unit, a Terrorist unit, and a Small Boat pirate unit, while modern transports would have "0" combat values.
