Barbarians!

I forget where (I think it was in one of the podcasts) one of the devs said that barbarians got a nuke in one of the games he was playing. Also in the gametrailers video there's footage of barbarian infantry in a camp being destroyed by mech infantry.

I realize it probably won't happen, but I'd kind of like to see barbarians stay somewhat relevant into the modern era with new encampment art and units to make them guerrilla fighters/insurgents. They could appear in your borders if you have low happiness, or sometimes on or near the border of another civ if they have low happiness, kind of like how there are armed groups in South America who camp in a neighboring nation and do cross-border raids back into their country of origin.

Yes, good riddance to the magical barbarians who appear simply from fog of war. The manual also says that if you destroy encampments on the coast, you won't have to worry about barbarian ships harassing your resources: another annoyance, especially in the early part of the game.

I never understood why they had cities in CivIV: aren't they suppose to be like nomads? If they are organized enough to form a city, then they're more like a city-state or civilization. Not really a horde of barbarians. The encampments make more sense, I think.

You would have to be really undefended if you let barbarians take 20hp down from your city. I dont think they can pillage it when it has hp. They need to attack a lot before doing any serious dmg.

cities can't be captured (pillaging is what barbs do instead of capturing) unless they have no hp left.

So, modern barbarians in civ 5 are terrorists?:aargh::ar15::sniper::suicide: OOh, I'm not ready to handle terrorists in civ!

No, terrorists don't consist of armies that are clearly visible.

I will probably turn of barbarians when I play just like I did 96% of the time when playing Civ 4. I know it will result in some Civs not being able to take full advantage of their special abilities but its better then having your city suddenly destroyed by nuclear armed "barbarians".

The barbains pillage yeah, so I guess upon defeating the city, they raze some buildings, murder some people, ransack some gold and then leave.

I think that modern examples for what would be represented by "Barbarian" units would be Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, FARC, and Shining Path. Guerrillas and insurgents more than terrorists.

As for the nuke used by barbarians, I think it was the pete murrary who said that, and that the barbarian was gifted the manhattan project or the nuke or w.e by the in-game modifier. So it didn't get it on its own volition, thats not to say It can't, but I think its a bit difficult to guess when a project is needed before a unit is allowed rather than just a tech which's mechanic is already in place.

How can you gift anything to barbarians? I thought they were just units that spawn on the map and then seek to randomly destroy everything that they come across.

i always figured them to be more like the native tribes of whatever unexplored continent they were on

It says in the manual they can capture workers and take them back to their camps.
You ( or anyone else) can get them back if you destroy the camp they went to.
I wonder how many units a barbarian camp can hold?

I'm assuming the Manhattan Project unlocks nukes for everyone as soon as a civ researches it, like in Civ4. That's how barbarians could get nukes, provided they have uranium and capture a worker to put the improvement on it. Or maybe if their camp spawns on top of a resource, they automatically get it?

Or maybe they can have any units without the required resources? I don't think they can build any improvements, and limiting them to resourceless units doesn't seem like a good idea.

No, I remember creating a thread about that where I asked about this some time ago and every Civ has to build the Manhattan project by itself before it can build nukes.

Sure they do. But they're certainly not restricted to them, either. The definition of "Terrorists" is pretty broad.
