I've been playing with the Incas a bit recently and enjoying the early combat edvantage that the quetcha offer. I'm annoyed, however, that ever time I play, once I get a coupla thousand years into the gaqme i get harrassed by marauding barbarian axemen!

In my last game, two Civs started on my continant, myself and Elizabeth. I quickly strangled and later wiped out Elizabeth and then concentrated on getting my quetchas lots of promotions from barbs whilst getting my economy up to scratch - ready for a massive quetcha rush on another continent.

The next thing I know is that from every single piece of fog-of-war on my continent springs an axeman or two. Needless to say they wiped ut all of my quetcha and al of my cities with me unable to do anything about it. "But why didn't you build axemen yourself to defend" I hear you ask. Because there was no copper on the whole continent. Not only that, but ahving discovered no coper I'd had to leggit towards iron working for iron and guess what.. there was only one source of Iron on the whole continent... 2 tiles from my first capital city.

So how on earth did the Barbs make Axemen? Is this fair?

Yes its absolutely normal for civ games.I remember while playing Civ1 barbs got galleys, caravels(boat after galley dunno what was the name) and in the middle of the game they attacked even with musketers(their strongest unit I remember). In addition they could control cities...
Only in civ3 barbarians dont control any city and got only camps.
Good that in civ4 it returned back to normal.

Running an early quechua rush is fine, but that unit certainly runs out of usefullness fast. Against a fortified archer with city def 2 it's not so hot. I do like the bonus against archers, but the AI uses more than archers. As do barbarians, as you know. The fact you got rid of one civ with them was a feat.

I really don't have a problem with barbs building axemen without copper. Anytime I have seen barbarian axemen, it was from a random spawn, and not built in the barbarian cities. Most I have ever seen in a barb city is archers.

I did come across a nicely developed barbarian city in my current game, about half way through it. A nice size 8 city with a fat border pinching the AI civs that also tried to settle that island. It was defended by two warriors (sweet). No match for my amphib swordsmen. I could not understand why one of the other civs didn't snatch it up.

Do you mean the Axemen were the fog-of-war barbarians or built in a city? If they came from a coastal city I would imagine they could trade for copper just like how they build roads to connect their land cities. And yeah barbarians have always been a pain but at least they let you use your military without making war on another nation in the early game.

You don't need Axemen to defend yourself against Barbarians. Archers do a much better job of it, and they don't require any resources. Even Axemen don't stand a chance against them if they're fortified in a city, especially if they have a rank or two in city defence.

BTW, this is hardly a bug report.
