Through battle or maybe research units should be able to learn new tactics. for instance after a certain amount of battles with spearmen you may learn the "phalanx" tactic. this new tacic icreases defence values of spearmen/pikemen.

all new units built will already know this tactic, but units built prior to the discover of the tactic will not know it. you would have to bring the unit into a city and "train" him, this would cost gold or sheilds. If you know a tactic your enemy does not you'll have an advantage over him for awhile, this would make the game more interesting. "Phalanx" would not be the only tactic, there should be many more like "marine assult" or "Guerilla attack",

if you can offer some suggeistions on other types of tacitcs or add to my idea :goodjob:

The basic idea of adding such 'utilization' upgrades with experience and/or techs makes sense. However the old units should just upgrade after a time(4-5 turns?) to avoid MM nightmares. Maybe once the tactics are discovered, everyone gets them in that 4-5 turns. If enemy has some kind of intelligence, they would know it was coming as well.

As long as this is mostly a gradual upgrade thing, it could have great implications.

1) Many units/technologies performed poorly when first used. It took experience and testing for effective tactics to come out(look at early firearms). This means that the earliest verison of a unit may have weaker stats than the very heavily used current classes of units with sophisticated tactics. However using these units will lead to better forms that are slightly better, than way better.

2) Wonders such as Sun Tzu's may could have more realistic effects. This means you could fight wars with 'superior' troops with less numbers.
