battles against all odds

Excellent example, AoA. The Battle of Samar was actually sort of made into a movie. A fictionalized version of it served as the climactic naval battle of the John Wayne war movie "In Harm's Way. The movie is actually rather bad, but that battle scene makes it worth watching..

I believe that the plot was not adopted from the action off samar. It appear to be a fictionalized account of Adm Richmond Kelly Turners career. he was partly pmealized because of pearl harbor, he lead the amphbious task forces at Guadacannal to take the nearly completed airfield, The close cover force of his task force was smashed a the battle of Savo Island yet the victorious Jap forces retired without foing on the the transport ackerage. Note alos the ghe geogrphy in the film. The Two islnad he is on are fictional but two Fiji Islands are metioned as a staging area, and they were staging area for Guadacanal. Although i cannot recall the word from the film, there was metioned something obviously analogous to the "Slot" in the Soloman islands.

If I recall the film, the plan is "Skyhook", and one of the islands is Gavavutu, I forget the other, maybe lavuvana?

Score one for the barrister. I forgot about the battle of Savo Island. The action shown in the movie was more similar to that battle than Samar, but the Yamato never took part in any action in the Solomon Islands, if I remember correctly. That threw me off.

The film version of "the slot" was called the "Paula Passage."

Did I mention that I'm a John Wayne fan?

@AoA: You are correct. Those are island names from the film.

It's been awhile since I saw that movie, as I recall, the maps they use resemble Guadalcanal and Florida Island (where Tulagi is) more then anything.

I think they threw thw Yamato in to be dramatic.

But I cite the bit above to say "no, no!" to Napoleon526. I don't know where you've got that story from; IIRC, both quotes are accurately attributed to Jones, not Nelson. And I am speaking as a fan of Nelson here....

Really? Hm. I knew of course that the "I have not yet begun to fight" quote was shouted by Jones in response to the Serapis' 's captain's request for him to surrender, But I was pretty sure that Nelson said the "Harm's way" quote. I'll have to do some checking...
