Bede01:Funny thing happened...

@ Cuivienen - sorry I didn't get your joke :smoke: Can we name our naval units too? Maybe we could give one of our yachts a nice elvish name in your honor...

@ Senate: Shall we dub Cuivienen "Admiral"?

@ Bugsy - nice going with the beakerheads  (lower level player here...not used to research in Anarchy...) I wish I had employed some more beakerheads in those high food cities...once we get markets and libraries in those 3 on the river, they are going to generate some nice science for us... oh - somebody asked why a temple in Khurasan... agree w/ you - flip risk.

@ Bede - I'm not so sure that the military and commercial traits are that un-complimentary. Consider this: Militaristic means cheap barracks and Harbors. Harbors give food and gold in coastal cities...and we've got one or two coastal cities... Hmmmm... wonder how these guys would do on a 'pelago map...

@ Barbslinger - not buying your fear of Abu. Not for one minute. I'm sure it just breaks your heart that we're going to come out of anarchy on your turns with a stack of Legionnaires in Abu's face... :p

General thought - I hope that yellow border Cuivienen spotted is Zulu, and not Egypt. If it's Egypt, we can count on settler competition from Cleo...

I'm going to have to experiment with the three beaker scientists, but I have the feeling that they are very powerful.

@ Scout - Anyone that can handle a vessel like she did, deserves to be a CFC Admiral. That was a remarkable display of shiphandling  Admiral Cuivienen of the Roman Navy! I think we ought to make her Chief of Naval Operations.

Yellow is Egypt. Black is Zulu.

5. 290 AD (con’t) – Since our budget is -15 gpt, I switch some scientists to taxmen. Currency is now due in 7 turns and our budget is -5 gpt.

6. 300 AD – Found Hippo Regius. Start a barracks.

Abu the stingy now has Monarchy. I trade him Republic for Monarchy and 12G.

7. 310 AD – Found Nicopolis in the jungle. Start a barracks.

Whack a barb and promote a AC.

8. 320 AD – Chop a forest.

IBT – Brundisium: Barracks=> Temple

9. 330 AD -
10. 340 AD – I’m going to play the last two turns of anarchy, so Slinger has a clean slate to play with.

IBT – The English have been destroyed. Currency comes in, start construction.

11. 350 AD – Task Force Abu is now in place. The Egyptians have planted a city on the other side of Basra.

IBT – Ack, some city riots.

12. 360 AD – Moving north. Drop off a settler pair and it happens to be near a bunch of barbs :p

After Action: Task Force Abu is a force of three legions and three elite ACs ready to take out Basra. I figure once the GA is sparked, you can try and fish for a leader.

I have several settlers heading north. No idea where they’re going, just heading towards wide open spaces. A bunch of military units are going that way also.

I have a galley to shuttle settler pairs north.

Save: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads7/Bede_1,_360_AD.SAV

The anarchy will be over when you come out of the IBT.

Well done Bugs. Sorry you had to chew through the anarchy. Not much to do but easier report writing with no builds. 2 questions.

On the trade for monarchy. Why if we we're planning republic?

Do I now play 8 or 10? I'm fine with 8.

Also, it looks like my turns will be spent leader fishing on archers after I whack the first spear for GA. I will also be heading for that juicy land up north. There looks to be enough land for a whole civ up there. With this many cities I'm starting to think like a commie. Any thought from the crew on that? How many cities does it take before it becomes a realistic option for gov't. One Special police station or whatever it is called and we have 3 cores pumping.

A few thoughts on the land grab - settle the northern coastline first...because Cleo can reach it... Hippo Regius will allow you to change coasts with the galley. Hopefully Cleo's fleet isn't too large - we need more galleys.... The barbarians up there are likely to be nasty...

Good luck with it!

On Monarchy, I just wanted to clean Abu's pocket before he died. It is worthless to us... sort of a vengeful thing.

The barbs are nasty up there. That's why I have most available units heading in that direction.

There are at least three spears in the Arabian capitol so hopefully you can generate a leader.

I suppose it is up to Bede, but I would say play your full ten turns.

@barbslinger,
play on till you get to 600AD if you like. We can even things up later in the game by dropping turns from Bugs or whatever. I just think it makes sense for the guy who starts a gov change to see it through to the end.

@Bugs,
Nice execution. Just noticed Cleo has dropped a little ville on the Basra peninsula. Now don't go gettin' all Marc Antony on me about the brown-eyed houri in harem pants. Isn't Joan in this world?

It's good the barbs are nasty up there, means no one else has found it, yet, though Cleo may be close.

On the communism thiing:
The land up north looks primo for that government. With the KGB HQ, an FP and a palace right where they are, and the new specialists you can take this game in whatever direction you choose. Taking Romans to Alpha Centtauri would have a nice flavor to it. (And I'd get to use my favorite city name)

Marc Antony - Now there's a twist. I think we'll nominate Scout for the Marc Antony role.

Yes as soon as I saw that I started thinking about how to get them to declare so we could MA with Abe to slow them both down. War happiness, slow them down on tech pace and little chance of damage.

@Bugs > Any idea where the other continent is on tech?

Shouldn't be hard. She will have galleys sailing the coast

@ Bugsy: How did *I* get nominated to play Marc?

@ Barbslinger: From the turnlog Americans are now building Leo’s Workshop & the Sistine Chapel so they're way, way ahead...

@ Bede: A Spaceship win in Communism? Would we be able to keep up in tech? Or are you planning to steal a bunch of techs?

On MA w/ Abe for war with Cleo... thinking out loud here... embassy w/ Abe... we can't trade him lux or resources yet... I wonder if Cleo lacks horses? Isn't that little Egyptian town near horses? If that's the case, Cleo might be looking to build her UU and start a war... it might be worth establishing an embassy with Abe and Cleo, and just see if war breaks out...

Looking at the MapStat on the last page, Egypt is a lot smaller than America -- if Egypt declares, America will swallow them whole.

Also, if we want to stop Cleo from sending galleys north, we can build a few extra Galleys ourselves and block three tiles of shoreline where the coast bends. Since she won't be able to safely send Galleys north, she won't send any at all.

Communism looks definite for this game. Since we'll be controlling 40+% of the world without conquering anyone but Arabia, Communism would likely end up more cost-effective than even Democracy. Look at the Byzantine version of the Cultured Communist Comrades game.

And, finally: Who killed Lizzy?

@ Cuivienen: I believe Cleo's got the Great Lighthouse, so her galleys can safely travel sea squares and get the extra movement point. I'm not sure a naval blockade is feasible. As for "who whacked Lizzy", I don't think we know... since we only know Abe, I guess we only know who it wasn't. Based on a little comparitive MapStat, my guess is Hiawatha dunnit:

Bede01- Romans – 360AD
Preturn – Not much to do but scan around. I see 4 active settlers and 2 in queue. The settler with a spear by the bananas will have a tough time I’m thinking.
IT – The galley that dropped off the banana settler beats 2 barbs but loses on the 3rd. America completes Knights Templar. We are a republic.

[1] 370AD – Since I think I will be hard pressed getting the current 3 settlers placed I’m switching 2 of the settler builds to worker in Hispalis and rax in Byzantium. We have 21 workers and maybe 7-8 slaves. I think we need nearly double that. We are at 30% lux for 4 different cities including Hispalis building a worker and Antium on a settler. I’m going to tax man the other two after these builds to drop our lux tax to 20% saving 12gpt. We’ll see after the builds. Construction is now due in 10 @-14gpt. Whoa, almost forgot, I’ve got business with Ab to fix all this. Theres 10 minutes I’ll never get back. Let’s go pay a visit and see if he can do something to improve the economy! I was hoping he would declare when I told him to remove his galley. No dice so I declare and move in. I attack with the E AC and win. Another AC retreats and another E AC wins. Still a spear and archer left in there. Gotta be careful. Wanna fish there. The banana settler spear attacks and takes out a warrior.
IT – A couple of workers complete.
[2] 380AD – The GA begins. The result is a 27gpt boost and construction in 7. Kill another barb where are galley landed. One more and we get gold and perhaps safety for a while. Begin working on the barb stack in the jungle and go elite. Looks like Bugs had been working on them already because I heal the others. Rome and Cumae swap to markets. Bugsys bombers is on a mission to meet Cleo.
IT – Antium – Settler > Market. Jerusalem – Harbor > Temple for whale.
[3] 390AD – Constuction spending goes up a notch to get it in 4. Abe wants around 1000g and 4 turns is worth 400g. Kill another 2 barbs. Find a whale for the banana settler.
IT – Egypt floats by. Mecca – Temple – Market. Antium, Neapolis and Hispalis do a worker > worker. Antium will go to market next turn as it grows with worker build. Cancel that I just realized a lot of the temple builds were prebuilds. I forgot because of the unhappiness we have everywhere. A few other builds icluding Antium go to markets. Missed Mecca though. It’s due in 9. Cleo is on F4 now. Construction is cheaper by trading. To whom though. I think to Abe so hopefully Cleo will declare when I tell her to get out. We get it for 4gpt and 193g (273g) vs. 300g over 3 turns and we have it now. I’m putting a mine on the plains in Pisae because it has 2 floodplains. Take 2 leader shots in Arabia. Wins, but no dice. Kill 3 more barb horses. Found Londinium near bananas set to another spear.
IT – Viro – Rax > Spear. Kufah – Galley > Galley. Selucia – Warrior > Temple for fish. Aurel – Worker > Galley
[4] 410AD – Lost a turn somewhere. Kill 4 barb horsies. Working land. Egypt is sailing in the sea so no blockade is possible.
IT – Neapolis – Worker >Temple
[5] 420AD – 2 more leader shots to no avail. 5 more barbs gone.
IT – Ceasaria – Galley > Galley. Nico and Taren > Rax>Spear.
[6] 430AD – Kill 5 more horses. 11 left and we can move up. Found Eburacum nested next to the volcanoes in the south.
IT – Egypt founds on the tundra south of us. Good luck with that site. Rome – Market > Legion 4 now. I’m going to buy lit right now. Viro – Spear > Market. Hispalis Wkr > Wkr. Palmyra – Spear > Temple 4 spice. There’s still a spot the AI could settle up there. HBR is in and we are in a new age. Egypt is tied with us believe it or not. I need an embassy. America is probably taking over. Feudal selected.

[7] 440AD – Thebes is building a market and has iron and horses. Also 5 luxes. Washington is building a uni, has iron, horses and saltpeter. It has 4 luxes and the wo are not at war. I’m really kind of upset with myself for not sending the western galley to try a crossing again. If they hax 5 luxes over there we can meet more AI. Kill 5 more horses. It may be clear next turn. Another leader fish comes up dry. I hate buying from Abe now but I really want some libraries. 7gpt and 69g gets lit and Rome swaps.
IT – CeasarAug – Temple > Galley. Abe is building Copernicus. Shoot.
[8] 450AD – Aurretium founded in the jungle. I feel safer up there now, barbs are dead and I move forward towards the new lands. Leader fishing hole is still dry.

I’m stopping here because I have a lot of game left in AG5 where it is a modern age war. Long turns. There is a galley next to Hippo now that you can grab the settler and spear with. I want to apologize for trading with Abe instead Cleo. I was thinking of getting her into a war so we could leader fish some more but she is so behind Abe that I dare not.

Screen shot to show location of Egypt and America.

@ Barbslinger - looks good. I see that a half-dozen or so markets will be completed by the end of Cuivienen's turns... that looks pretty good.

I hate it that the Barbs clipped one of our Galleys. Perhaps now that our Admiral is up our naval situation will improve. Also hate it that we're in a land-grab contest with Cleo... but there's not much to be done about that.

I see we're still building a Granary in Damascus. Was this intended as a Market pre-build? Or maybe an aquecuct?

We're in a land grab contest, but we've got more settlers headed north.

One idea might be to only subdue the barbs near where we want to settle. Tha raging barbs might knock off a settler pair or two.

Can we spare some legionnaires for settler escort duty? A 3/3 Legion should be a barb killing machine...
