Berkely bans Asian Students!!!!

Then go to other countries like Australia, or Britain (we already do anyway). Or go local. There're other ways to spend our hard-earned cash, after all.

Anyways, only losers who fail to get into the local universities need to go overseas to study... :p Awful waste of good money, if you ask me.

I guess they should'nt have any problem topping any of the other universities they go to anyway;)

Berkeley has a history with discriminating against Asians. They're affirmative action policies that allotted admissions slots by race in proportion to the racial make-up of California hurt Asian Americans the most. They needed higher scores & grades than all other races (including whites) to get a slot. Since one of the underpinnings of affirmative action is to help rectify racist wrongs of prior generations by inflicting a more benevolant racism on the descendants of the past racists, then I guess we can assume that the Asians in California were doing all they could to keep the white man down before affirmative action came along.

Look at the numbers before you decide to call them racist:
The Asian American population at UC Berkeley was 45.2% for the 1999-2000 school year, putting it even with UCLA for the title of top Asian American University.

In the fall of 2003 40% of students admitted were Asian American while 37.9% of students that applied were Asian American. Considering that the majority of the students applying and getting accepted are Asian, they have a reason to have affirmative action policies that let the other minorities have a spot in the school. You can't please everyone it seems.

I don't see why the Asian Americans shld be penalized for studying harder than other people...

Anyways, what does all this have to do with denying summer school to Asians fr SARS-affected countries? Are they counted during the valuation of per centages for Affirmative Action considerations?

If that's the case, then why are Asians banned and Canadians not?
Toronto was taken off the WHO's list about a week ago.

It's not about percentages. The Asian Ameriucans typically have much higher average avgerages and average sat scores than other groups. If everything must adhere to quotas, I don't see how the NBA can be composed of mostly black players.

This is what my university is advising students from areas currently affected, which is defined as Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Inner Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar City (Mongolia), Toronto (Canada) and, in China, the regions of Guangdong, Shanxi, Beijing and Tianjin.

1. If you do not have the SARS symptoms the medical advice is that you are not a risk to others and should continue with your studies, exams and other activities as normal.
2. If you have returned from a SARS affected region it would be helpful if you would inform the University Health Centre. Any information will be treated in confidence.
3. If, within 10 days, of returning from a SARS affected region you feel unwell you should immediately return to your term-time home and phone your doctor for advice. If you are not currently registered with a doctor you should phone the University Health Centre.

A much more apprioriate course of action, in my opinion.

Wierd thread - half about SARS, half about Asian discrimination.

Interestingly, SARS has dropped off the news radar this past week at least the news I've seen. I think when we had two horsemen of the apocalypse out of the bag (war and famine) people wanted to see if they couldn't get pestilence to come along so Jesus would show up on the fourth horse (that's another thread altogether).

I can't believe that Berkely would go as far as banning all Asian students for the fear of SARS:mad:

Now that's racist!!!

Well I wouldn't say that they've 'banned' 'asian' students. They're just turning away applicants from the cities of concern.
I didn't want to go to Berkeley anyway! It looks and feels like Communismville, USA to me. ;) :D

Contrary to popular belief, Berkeley is not part of America :)

Why does being Fillippino make you an expert on race?

Sorry. I should have prefaced my comments with "Before the courts stepped in . . ." The numbers are now a closer reflection of merit (if you consider SAT's, GPA's, etc. merit) since Berkeley's old admissions procedures were struck down. Something about needing a compelling interest to have institutionalized racism. Maybe SARS is that compelling interest.

Doesnt make me an expert just an ordinary Asian american citizen. Who would generally be pissed or discontent.

How is Berkley not part of the U.S?

Oh and sorry about the racist part, once again anger

Well, at least they have clarified and dropped Singapore off the list, after complaints. No links, but what I read in the news (real paper news :p) this morning.
