Keshiks aren't all that great in multiplayer. While they can still retreat humans have a better chance of being able to hit them before they retreat and therefore killing them. This limits the chances of them becoming higher promoted.
They aren't as durable therefore, and in multi people prefer camel archers over them I have noticed.
=====
Admitedly most people in multi I play don't take Mongolia. The few times I have faced Keshiks myself in multi I was fighting a proxy war in someone elses land where they had Great Wall allowing me to kill the fairly vulnerable units easily.
Another game I was using conquistadors vs keshiks. The 2 sight advantage allowed me to see when in the turn he was moving his keshiks near me to try and attack so I could kill them in one hit before he even got a chance. I killed so many Keshiks that way even when he had a faster computer.
Tercios came along shortly but with a small Conquistador fleet (7 conquistadors) I was able to crush a much larger multiplayer Keshik force.
