Keshiks aren't all that great in multiplayer. While they can still retreat humans have a better chance of being able to hit them before they retreat and therefore killing them. This limits the chances of them becoming higher promoted.

They aren't as durable therefore, and in multi people prefer camel archers over them I have noticed.

Admitedly most people in multi I play don't take Mongolia. The few times I have faced Keshiks myself in multi I was fighting a proxy war in someone elses land where they had Great Wall allowing me to kill the fairly vulnerable units easily.

Another game I was using conquistadors vs keshiks. The 2 sight advantage allowed me to see when in the turn he was moving his keshiks near me to try and attack so I could kill them in one hit before he even got a chance. I killed so many Keshiks that way even when he had a faster computer.

Tercios came along shortly but with a small Conquistador fleet (7 conquistadors) I was able to crush a much larger multiplayer Keshik force.

Singleplayer : Keshiks!
Multiplayer : Phants!

Human players can eat keshiks for breakfast if they can move first(not hotseat, online multiplayer). But they have some difficulties to spam pikemen ;)

While I don't do MP, the above posters make a valid point.

Talking about the best units vs. the computer is kinda like talking about which is the best bomb to use to kill a squirrel. It's all overkill.

Conquistadors are by far epic. They are powerful on the battlefield and they can make cities. No more 2-moves per turn settlers who die when attacked. Here comes the 5(?)-move units that can pack a major punch in battle. I used conquistadors several times in combat during my Spain game. They are really good units.

I've yet to play multiplayer so it's good to know that camel archers aren't totally useless. It looks like the Civ 5 guide definitely needs more finetuning :)
