It's odd. There are no religious ones here. I chose it second for the culture the improvements generate. Though it looks like other buildings can make just as much.

Science is important, but I don't think the Scientific ability gives that much of an advantage. Free tech is like goody huts. Expansionists might get equal or better advantage here.

Science improvements are easier to build. There aren't that many science improvements (3 or 4?); of course, in the long run , you'll have lots of cities and you'll want those libraries. But you'll still need trade arrows (ie roads, oceans, rivers).

There are also other ways to acquire techs, through conquest (at least in Civ 2) and through diplomacy. Then there are Wonders like Great Library (if it's the same as Civ 2), Colossus, Newton's College, etc.

I picked Scientific, simply because, in all my Civ experience and in all my experience with every other empire building / world conquest type game (e.g. MOO2, SMAC, RFTS, etc), The civ/nation/race/faction with the Science edge almost always wins.
There's /no/ substitute for knowledge, and knowledge is power.

In CivIII, it can likely be traded for things you don't have, too!

Now, I do think that Scientific has been toned down - the bonus is to building things like Universities, so there's no across-the-board increase in your Research rate.
Combine Scientific with Industrious (odd that that's not an option, eh? Gamebalance, I assume) and you'd pump out those improvements too quickly.
Combine Scientific with Commercial, and you can boost your Research rate... Dangerous.
Combine Scientific wth Expansionistic, and (with some luck) you'll be into the next Age before your opponents are even halfway through!

Russians, baby, yeah!!

PS (I think the French are pretty awesome, too. It's hard to argue with the intense flexibility of being both Industrious /and/ Commercial)

PPS (Anyone know if Philosophy is still going to grant a free Advance?)

Knowledge = Power
Money = Happiness

Therefore Science & Commerce are the Path to victory!

Plus a good early defender, so the Greeks got my vote!

Straight to the point without the useless burden of a sentence :p

but
Money = root of evil !
and power = corrupts and corruption = evil :o
I see a grim future for your greeks ;) :D

Scientific & Religeous looks pretty strong to me !

High culture and advanced science should keep everyone in awe of your civilization, slowly absorb the world and crush the opposition with your modern armies !

It has been brought to my attention that the Persians are Scientific and Industrious.
I been operating under the misunderstanding that that combination didn't exist. I'd convinced myself that it was because such a combination was way imballanced.
Now that I've seen the light, I have a brand-new much-favored civ:
The Persians!!

Although the Russians and the French are close seconds. The Persians get the nod also because of their earlier CSU.

You need Science to advance and Commerce to support your advance. There is no better combo.

Maybe I am missing something, but I thought the only real constant in the game was unhappiness. If you are behind in tech, you can still win battles. If you have unhappy citizens and have to make entertainers, you loose the production they could be creating. I could go on with the other bonuses, but I think you see my point (even if it is wrong:) ) If this is so, why is religous so far down on everybodys list. Getting buildings that make people happy more quickly seems like a big (the biggest maybe?) plus to me.

Also the higher up in difficulty you go the better it is. While on chief it may be worth little (expect for the faster culture gained) but on the higherst level Religous will help greatly.

I'm leaning towards taking the Germans with thier militaristic/Scientific Combo and they will probally have a modern UU like a tank.

Although I won't make my final descion til I read the game manual and get a better understanding of how the game plays.

Well, it looks like the Persians are it! Which is cool, because I was planning on playing them anyhow (along with the Iriquois).

I'll be sure not to repeat the mistake at Thermopylae or Salamis. :yeah:

For me its GOT to be miltaristic. From what I've heard, armies are going to be mighty powerful and could swing the tide of a war therefore more battlefield promotions=more great leaders=more armies=WORLD DOMINATION!!! However, i have to say the scientific comes a close second but in the end, who wins, 3 individual marines or an ARMY of riflemen/ (by the way, the army wins IMO)
:tank:

Well, looking at the poll stats, the WORST Civ to play would be Religious and Expansionist...which is...

Iriquois

Somehow I chose the best and worst* civ to play! [punch]

*Based on Poll results

Well it is clear that "Religious" is percieved to be the dud. Of course, until we start playing we really won't know ;)

The commercial and scientific bonus are the better ones!!! :king: :scan:

If you got money and tecnology, don't worry, you got it all!

That's why I have chosen the greeks as the better civ in the game.

roads or no trade and no resource. for city pop. 1 for a worker, 2
for a new city. roads to bonus food resources. plus, all that food, I never raced to build the Pyramids, I will now. how much faster will roads be built? french, russians, americans, any order.

i think fast working workers will give good economy, culture and science.

the french and the greeks look best to me. good defensive uu and their abilities will be a good combo.

I voted for science because I usually am not very militaristic in the beginning, I research first for better units and attack then!:rotfl:
Its just a pleasure to attack against a phalanx with a armor or howitzer or something:tank:

France got too much. The USA should have gotten commercial and industrious.
