Ocarina of Time is Miyamoto's Citizen Kane. The game encompasses everything that is unique to video games as an art form and takes players along for the ride. Creative level design, massive bosses, an epic story encompassing over forty hours of gameplay, action, adventure, these are what video games are made of, and Ocarina of Time has it all. The game also features a highly innovative "Z-Targeting" system which allows players to target an enemy, always keeping it within their view, to attack and dodge with ease. A similar system has since been implemented in such games as Shadowman, Eternal Darkness, and Metroid Prime, and will most likely see even more use in the future. This highly imaginative and innovative game is absolutely timeless, and will still be considered one of gaming's greatest creations for many years to come.
Super Mario 64 ushered in this crazy thing we call 3D gaming. For the first time ever, players were able to traverse a massive fully three dimensional, and fully interactive, world. To say that Mario 64 has since been imitated is an understatement. Just about every 3D game produced since Mario 64 made its debut owes quite a bit to the plumber's first 3D outing. The game controls like a dream, featuring spot on control not once outdone on the Nintendo 64. Gameplay revolves around solving puzzles, negotiating obstacles, and defeating enemies to gain Stars, which in turn allows the player access to more and more levels. In fact, as the game goes on, it becomes more and more non-linear, eventually offering an absolutely massive number of possible routes to take. Stuck on one star? Don't worry, there's 119 others just waiting to be earned.
