OK, I was Inspired by the Chrono Trigger thread.

What according to you all is the best game released by Square and why?

Myself I loved FF VII for the PS1. Production values were top notch, the charachters and story were great and the graphics were some of the best ever seen in an RPG.

Thoughts on one of the most successful video game companies in history?

Hard Choice. It's certainly a toss up between either Final Fantasy Tactics or Xenogears. Honestly they are so incredibly far beyond anything else Square has made it's not even fair to compare their other games to those two, just in totally different leagues.

I havent played much others but I would have to say FF9 and Front mission 3.

FF8 was a bit of a cop-out. The graphics weren't much better than VII the storyline was less interesting, the magic system was shite, and mostly the last battle was easy but sooo long and boring. I never finished the bloody game because I couldn't handle another 45 minutes fighting the last boss.

FFVI hands down!

What can I say? I'm old school! I like pixels over polygons any day!

FF9 beats FF7 in every aspect...including the villain. Sephiroth is a cool villain but I though Kuja was more hateable better overall. Plus the story starts to pick up at the end instead of taper off like it does in 7...

As for best Square game, Ill agree with Till. Secret of Mana. Followed by FF Tactics and then FF9.

Well, I would say that FFIX was a great game, and an excellent send off to the PS1, but it still can't touch FFVII. FFIX was quite enjoyable, and I enjoyed the characters quite a bit, especially Vivi. He's my favorite video game character ever. But Kuja, he was cool, but still, what could possibly be cooler than Sephiroth? He was such a bad ass enigma, all the way until the very end.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced

Tactics, eh? I must try that one. Is it a true, story based RPG, or is it more a turn based battle simulator?

It's honestly both. It's a true story-driven game, among the best of any square game with only Xenogears being on the same level. It certainly isn't a normal RPG though, it has different map system and battle system in the vein of Shining Force and Tactics Ogre. Seriously though, even if you hate the gameplay it's worth playing for the story alone. I've heard from more than one person that they HATED the game itself, but loved the story so much they chugged through it. Fortunatly they are in the minority, most people love the gameplay and the story (i'm one of them!). Just don't confuse it for Tactics advanced.

Hmmm A close call between Secret of mana and Front Mission III

Mario RPG! :D

A testimate to the visual capabilities of the SNES, coupled with a great dead of humour and some excellent audio.

Not to mention that it was the first RPG I ever played.

I don't think that was a Squaresoft game, especially seeing that it was released during the cold war between Nintendo and Square.
