Best Vietnam War movie?

I've only seen bits and pieces of Deer Hunter, but it wins because it has Christopher Walken in it.

When I saw it, it made me want to be physically sick.

Full Metal Jacket is my tops-normal guys in a baaaad situation. Besides,
Coach (Saving Silverman) is the Drill Sgt!!! :cooool: . But I enjoy ALL
Vietnam movies as I have studied and read much of this war. :scan:

Because it was bad, or moving, or what?

Still...its got Walken in it. No contest. :p

Well, because it's very moving, and it has some poignant violence.

It would be interesting to actually see a Vietnamese Vietnam War movie. :hmm:

And oh, here is some quotes from We Were Soldiers:
Cecile Moore: Daddy, What's a war?
Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: Well a war is when people hurt other people, and people like daddy try to stop them.

Moore and Geoghegan a prayer before leaving for Vietnam
Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: Our Father in Heaven, before we go into battle, every soldier among us will approach you each in his own way. Our enemies too, according to their own understanding, will ask for protection and for victory. And so, we bow before your infinite wisdom. We offer our prayers as best we can. I pray you watch over the young Jack Geoghegan. That I lead into battle. You use me as your instrument in this awful hell of war to watch over them. Especially if they're men like this one beside me, deserving of a future in your blessing and goodwill. Amen.
2nd Lieutenant Jack Geoghegan: Amen.
Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: Oh, yes, and one more thing, dear Lord, about our enemies, ignore their heathen prayers and help us blow those little bastards straight to Hell. Amen.
What can I say... the whole film was an unbelievably crappy piece of propaganda, not to mention the fact it was filmed entirely in America. :crazyeye:

Yeah, I'd agree with nonconformist - the Deer Hunter can certainly give you an ill feeling in a few scenes. Russian Roulette, whether being forced on them by their captors or resigned to by Walken, is an uneasy thing to deal with, especially as grittily as the Deer Hunter approaches it (not to mention the general sense of despair). Great movie though. Although when you boil it all down I'm with you cgannon64 - any movie with Christopher Walken in it is all right by me. Especially King of New York, but I digress...

Anyway, I'd have a hard time picking a favorite among such different movies, but I enjoyed all of the aforementioned (Deer Hunter, Full Metal Jacket (same halves-seem-seperate issues here, but a great movie), Platoon, Apocalypse Now, We Were Soldiers, and Hamburger Hill). If I had to pick a favorite, I'm sure I've watched Full Metal Jacket the most (especially if you count only watching it till they leave for nam, which IMO is surprisingly satisfying as a whole movie unto itself).

Oh yeah and btw - whoever said that killing that sniper in full metal jacket seemed more merciful than hardcore, I couldn't agree more.

Lt. Colonel Hal Moore: Oh, yes, and one more thing, dear Lord, about our enemies, ignore their heathen prayers and help us blow those little bastards straight to Hell. Amen.

I love that quote...

Apocalpyse Now was taken from Joseph Conrad's book Heart of Darkness. If you want to understand the movie, read the book.

How anyone could like The Deer Hunter is beyond me. It was slow, and I mean S L O W ! Also, anyone with any experience in the military would know that it is impossible for someone to become a E7 (Sergeant First Class) with only three years active service. It took me 10 years to make E7, and a lot of people were amazed that I made it that quickly. Other than being slow and unbelievable, it was an ok movie.
