Beta UHV discussion

I actually thought about England or Germany giving something like "Found protestantism and achieve XY faith points". What do you think about it?

I like it. But which UHV should it replace. I think the old ones are better. (Maybe the last could be replaced (Be the first who enters the industrial age))

Suggestion for Cordoba:

1. Make Cordoba the largest city in 1000 AD
2. Build 2 Catholic churches, 2 ortodox churches and 1 jewish quarter in 1150 AD
3. Make Cordoba the most cultural city in 1200 AD

What do you think? Is the jewish quarter too hard? Or the ortodox? I was thinking of a way to portrait the various religions in the area during the time.

Agreed with merijn on that
(btw just to mention, building a few churches and a jewish quarter sounds way too easy)

Well, to build those buildings you need the religion present in the cities you own. And they arent just gonna go there as you wish...

Ok, maybe focusing is wrong. They may have tolerated other religions but surely didnt actively try to lure them there. I´ll have to think about something better.

If you don't spread Islam to your cities on the beginning, there is a very good chance that both Protestantism and Catholicism will spread to at least one of your cities. And the spread of Jewism is hard-coded to spread to a Cordoban city with high probability
The point is that you can easily have all 3 major religions in all of your cities if you really want to

I like this timefram better than the current, but why not just make it build the three wonders by 1150? That way all 3 would coincide. Not sure if the third would be possible, remember Byzantium usually has a few wonders and starts with 2

Well, building the wonders is too closely related to also being the most cultural city. So to make it a challenge the other goal has to be something else.

Unite the Iberian peninsula under one faith maybe? ;-)

True, but right now they are also closely related
(build those 3 wonders and have 7000 culture)
Not to mention the fact that it's pretty lame that you can only win the the 7000 culture part by settling a great artist

We should definitely have a different 3rd goal

Hmm doesn't that sound like Spain?? maybe something else like have 3 cities in north africa and 4 in iberia by 1100 and push back the city specific ones. The real problem in that cordoba is designed to die out somewhat quickly after Spain spawns (or at least thats my take on it) so I'm thinking we should change the goals around some, maybe something based on luxury resources or expansion and give another civ the most food one

Having 4 cities in iberia and 3 in africa isn't a real challenge for cordoba. I mean you start with 4 cities in iberia and 1 in africa, so you have to build a galley and two settlers. That is not really much.

If you have a good 3rd UHV for cordoba that fits better and isn't to easy or complex to code i'll change it. While that i'm quite happy with the current uhv.

Germany

Played it a couple of times and here is my opinion:

The first UHV, contrrolling the Rhine bank, is way too easy. You start with Frankfurt and Augsburg. With the three given settlers at the beginning I found Strassburg, Bern and Koeln. Then I build one settler by my own and found Amsterdam. UHV done without any serious resistance. The western civs, Frankia and Burgundy, are not a threat at all. In some games they declare war but don´t attack in others they stay peacefull to me.
To keep it interesting I started expanding east up to the Oder and tried to conquer Poland. Unfortunately if I expand too much my empire collapses although I have a very strong army, excellent infrastructure and even built some wonders although that´s not aim of playing with Germany.
My suggestion would be to expand the territorial UHV so at the end the German empire should be in this borders: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HRR_14Jh.jpg
Furthermore I would recommend to make the Norse more aggressive against Germany so you have to protect your northern border.

The second UHV, have three vassales, is imo a random UHV where you hardly have any influence. Sometimes I had three or even more vassales very early of the game although I haven´t done anything and wasn´t that strong. In other games I even had none although I was powerfull and most of the civs liked me.

Third UHV, strongest army in Europe, has not been fullfilled yet. Can´t say if it´s easy or hard to fullfill. But if I see how my neighbours are performing I don´t think this goal will be hard to reach :-)

Still great mod although I don´t like getting instability points if you expand too much.

Adopt Orthodoxy, you can get as large as you want

Kievans have a far too simple time. New suggestion:

Found at least 4 cities along the Black Sea north coast by 1100AD
Build 2 orthodox cathedrals by 1200AD
Lose no cities before 1300AD

I will take the civilizations and one by one fix them. It will just take time.

Kiev will be relatively easy to fix, they have little interaction with the AI, just the Barbarians.

I've played two games with the Arabs now (using Beta 4). Most of the challenge is in the second UHV (get Islam to 25%).

The first UHV (to conquer a small region by 1000) is easy, but it forces you to be exposed to the Seljuk attacks from the north and it gives a player some focus, so I think it's fine.

In my first game, I played conservatively, building up my economy and defenses after the first UHV. Plenty of barbs and crusades to deal with. By not going further into Anatolia, I wanted to prevent conflict with the Turks. I expanded onto island and southern Italy. After the Turks spawned I helped them take Constantinople (weakening the defenders) and the two of us eventually grew to 25%.

In my second game I went for the 25% goal early. I kept attacking Byzantium, taking everything in the east. My economy sucked until I took Constantinople. I beelined for religious prosecutor. Prosecuting all my big cities I reach 25% shortly before 1000 AD. Not sure how easy it will be to survive the oncoming challenges, but the last UHV is basically just a survival goal.

I didn't play the Arabs for a while, but when I played them, the 25% Islam goal wasn't very hard. You (just) have to expand your empire from Damascus to Tunis and grow your cities. Then just let your cities grow and you'll the UHV automatically.

And I thought it was harder than that. If it is too easy, we can do stuff about it. Many things changed for Beta 5. I want to test couple of more things (make sure there are no more bugs) and I will release it in maybe an hour or two.
