Just finished an Emperor level game (Vanila Civ 3) playing as Chinese .... had a comfortable lead over everyone ( I had score of 3300, India in 2nd place with 2200 ) .... militarily I had Modern Armor, Mech Inf, Stealth, and most important, my Spaceship needed only the Plantetarium which becomes available once you've researched The Laser ... well, guess what .... right on the turn that I completed researching the Laser, Gandhi comes 'a calling like he had so many other times during the game ... so like a fool I say what will you offer me for The Laser, and he says Miniturization, 2700 Gold, and 68 GPT ... so I say great, I'll be launching Spaceship and/or winning military domination victory ver soon anyway, so I accept .... great move - right! ....

one turn later I get the message "You have suffered a humiliating defeat" .... seems that Gandhi, having stayed out of wars for the most part, and traded heavily with me in GPT for resources, techs, etc. (so I left him alone) finished his Spaceship one turn before me! ...

for the heck of it I replayed the turn thanks to Autosave, and by NOT trading him the Laser, then I was able to win by launching my Spaceship 1st ....

Lesson Learned - BE VERY WARY OF A HINDU LEADER BEARING LOTS OF GOLD AND WHO SMILES A LOT! :hmm:

hehe, funny!

But this does belong in General Discussions you know... ;)

At least he didn't: make the trade, RoP rape your capital, and then complete his spaceship.

ya, he could have got a RoP, then rop raped u, takign your apollo city, then goes on to win spacerace leavign you way behind. now that woudl be called a humiliating defeat.

This happened to me once (I wasn't quite as close to launching) and I learned my lesson. Now I always make sure I get spies in all the advanced civs and keep track of their spaceship progress. There is an icon on your civ's spaceship progress screen that shows which civs are in the space race, how many components they've completed and how many they have in progress. I've also found that if I have spies in other civs, my science advisor will pop up during the game and advise as to a completion, i.e. "The Babylonians have added SS Fuel Cells to their spaceship." With spies you have a level of assurance that you are winning the space race and how long you can stretch things out to maximize your score.

Of course, in planting spies you run the risk of having war declared by the other civ. But I have yet to be ruined by attempting to plant a spy.

Although I m an Indian, I think Gandhi is liar, stupid, idiot, double crosser and the worst leader in the civ3 game . During the game I usually thrash him good and Always llimit him to two or one city i keep demanding whtever gold he has collected over time :groucho:
