[Beyond the Sword] Necro Cristi

some more teaser stufff...

...and i did an North America - After Apocalypse map for you colin =)

Download here:

@Cadaveres - thanks for your input. You are quite right that the undead threat needs to be boosted up from 'annoyance' to 'potentially game ending'. Unfortunately a lot of what you suggested requires python work, which I am still in the early stages of deciphering. Giving the undead some teeth is ongoing though!

@Psycadelic Magi - well, I won't be able to get to modding again until August so a while yet. I'm not sure yet what the new patch changes and how much this affects existing mods.

@SeZereth - more outstanding work. Units like this would really give the mod a new lease of life, um, so to speak.

@Sifaus - thankyou. I will try and include it with the next release. Certainly until I get around to making an appropriate mapscript we need something post-apocalyptic to play on.

aarrgh... i played and tested the map and I updated the map :) there is some "big" changes

zombies are in the download section ;)

Im a bit ashamed of asking this because i think you have already answered this, but i couldnt find the post.
When i load the MOD and go to civilopedia i find the normal civilopedia, the same happends me with leaders and everything expet for the background, what should i do? (PS: I play Civ BTS in Spanish and i se th blue marbel version, i don't know if this is relevant)
(PS2:I love the MOD, at least what im reading about it)

And when you attempt to play the game, do you get NecroCristi, or the vanilla game? This will tell us whether the mod is installed correctly.

I get NecroCristi but apart from the name everything is from the vanilla, the leaders, the civilopedia, everything!

Are you able to get into any of the mods which come with BTS, such as Charlemagne or Final Frontier, with the correct non-vanilla civilopedia and units?

Are you able to get into any other downloaded mod, or is this your first one?

Do the instructions on this post help any?

it works now, i think the problem was an error when i un-zipped it, Thank you very much for your help!!! :thanx: :thanx: :thanx:

played the mod last night and it was a lot of fun. couple of questions:

do you plan on making the religions unique or will they act like they do in vanilla?

are all pedia entries supposed to be in? i had vanilla entries for all leaders, civs, many others things, even though they would have the NC graphics.

It happends to me too but i think its just like that for now

@jimi12:

Most of the pedia isn't done yet. Unless you are experiencing serious omissions like the above poster (no new leaders, graphics, etc.) then there is nothing wrong with your install. They will be done in the future though - I am a frustrated writer at heart so love the literary side of modding.

re. religions, I figured what's the point of thinking up interesting post-apocalyptic religions if you don't do fun things with them? When in the future I get around to seriously modding the religions I am working from he following blueprint:

Early Game Religions

Word of Solomon:

The religion most closely resembling current real world religions and arising out of the progressive Foundationist movement. Word of Solomon is a monotheistic religion based around Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. They see their divine destiny as purging the earth of both the undead abominations and the heathens. Currently they have a couple of units in game (as of 0.2) and will be a religion providing strong units, especially against the undead.

Flesh of Vodoun:

The dialectical anithesis of Solomon's Word, Flesh of Vodoun worships the undead as Gods or, more accurately as multiple manifestations of God. This religion is required to enact the civic providing peace with the undead, as well as allowing the player to build undead units themselves. Will probably have penalties to culture and possibly happiness.

Mid-Game Religions

Breath of Gaia:

The worship of the Earth herself and dedication to preserving her in her pristine form. Disallows many industrial buildings, units and improvements but allows better yields from unspoiled lands, especially forests and rivers. Provides lots of happiness.

Florentine School:

Represents a second enlightenment for mankind as ideas of science, culture, philosophy and art are developed and spread throughout the land. Carries some severe military penalties but is unmatched for science and culture growth.

Late Game Religion

Sunya:

The worship of the void, Sunya is the apotheosis of destruction. Sunya seeks to return all matter to a state of nothingness whether through it's reaver priests or the doctrine of suicide it preaches. Any factions beyond the faction where it is founded would do well to avoid this religion as, when it spreads to their cities, it will slowly shrink them until they are destroyed.

those concepts for the religions sounds really cool. i cant wait to see how you implement them. while i have you here explaining things...

is the pale hand the group that started the outbreak? i understand how most of the factions come about but i was confused about them and zanzibar.

I think they started the outbreak because one tech (i can't remember wich one) shows some reports that say the defenses of the capital cities are no more there so the infection can get through (these reports are from the pale hand) , plus they look too happy and sick, fact wich i find a little suspicious (my original language is Spanish so sorry if I made some mistakes)

Tried Necro Cristi for the first time. Not having played it before I didn't know that tree cutting was so far into the tech tree. Settling in a heavily forested area didn't lend itself to a good start. I understand delaying the tech somewhat to avoid chop rushing, but having it so far into the tech tree is a feature that I don't like in several mods.

Knowing the same applies here too, I will use a map script to reduce the % of forest next time. My two closest neighbors were on flood plains, and I was tucked into the back nine of Sherwood Forest. A less than spectacular beginning for what would have been a great beginning area in vanilla.

The undead were hitting me hard too. I lost more Junkyard Dogs to them than the odds should have allowed. Even when I was on a forested hill and the undead had to cross a river to get to me, my Junkyard Dogs lost. Just bad rolls? Maybe. The undead presented a significant threat in the beginning and made my wooded progression even slower.

By the time I got out of the woods and scouted the world, I realized how far behind I was. I settled 8 cities fairly quickly, but didn't think I could catch up from my deficit to be a contender. Looks like a do-over.

One place you outdid yourself on is with the music. I'm pretty sure I heard some Wagner there. It sounded like a clashing fanfare war march. It seemed very appropriate for the leader. After my mulligan, I opened up the music folder and diplomacy music folder to listen to what I might have missed. Really great choices. I appreciate the leaderheads and their text, and the music most of all.

Next game I look forward to enjoying a healthy dish of revenge!

In the rough timeline I have, the Pale Hand are responsible for a second outbreak happening many years after the initial disaster (I have alluded in some of the tech entries how things turn out for the Pale Hand, but if you know your Greek legends you can probably guess). As to the initial outbreak, there is no definitive answer: the Word of Solomon preaches that God was displeased at the faithlesness of his flock and so opened up Hell to punish the unworthy. The Garden of Ki hold that the undead are simply natures way of thinning out a human population which was destroying the planet. There are many theories.

The Zanzibar Dynasty are the government which existed following a coup by industrialist Wilhelm Zanzibar in the decade after outbreak. They probably read a lot of Nietzsche and occasionally try to murder each other.

re. the music - I've not got any Wagner in there, but there are a couple of Verdi extracts which sound quite Wagnerian - Otto and Wilhelm Zanzibar both have themes from different movements of Verdi's Requiem.

Ah, that's it. It was the Dies Irae requiem. I'm not as familiar with classical music as I should be considering how it has made so many movies (or scenes) that much better (Star Wars, Conan the Barbarian, Apocolypse Now, etc). Very fitting music for Zanzibar. Thanks. I was able to go YouTube it once I knew the composer.

Haven't played it yet, but I have a question. Will players ever play as "zombies"? It could be like a minor civ in Revolution, being at war with everyone. The player could start off with say, with a small "city" that produced 1-3 zombies per turn until the player catches their first city.
You wouldn't be able to build anything in the cities of course. After capturing the first city, its all about turning other units in mindless zombies. Capturing cities could give some quick extra units, a pop 5 city could reward the player 5 zombies and than the city is razed.
