Bismarck (Industrious-Deity Series)

Only two leaders left to go in this series. And now I FINALLY get around to do another Bismarck. While I can't say his UU is very useful, let's see how we do...

Very nice series man. I'm new in these forums (not new in the game though) and it's nice to see someone who is actually proving that cottage spamming isn't the only option to get a win;)

Everything about Germany is good in civ IV except for its uniques...well that and how the AI plays frederick.

Along with IND which is being showcased, EXP is also consistently underrated...but cheap early workers and a cost reduction on THE #1 most important building (which also comes early) area huge lift...and the health bonus is nice too. I find EXP competitive with any other expansion trait and the payback time on new cities is greatly reduced thanks to the granary being a 1 pop whip or easy chop.

Nice write-up and documented series.

I do like to point out a few weakness in these playing styles on high levels.

Wonder spam or going hardcore culture leaves you at the bottom of everything every game; power/research/population/production/score and etc. The top AIs often have more than 3 times your score post 1000AD.

In these kind of games, you are at complete mercy of the AIs and RNG since most AIs can declare at pleased. And when they do DOW it is game over due to non-existant military in your cities and or severe lagging in military techs. AIs are "stupid", but they still can DOW at pleased and invade you with a large stack of tanks against your longbows.

With these Cultural games, it seems the luck of getting early religions to spread to you is also very important, again you may not get more than 2 religions every game.

Edit: At these levels, unless you can get everyone friendly or get AIs fighting among themselves, I would suggest a player at least have the capacity to defend against an unexpected DOW before pursuing a peaceful victory condition.

These successful games posted seemed "easy" enough, but I doubt the true success rates on a random Deity game is very high.

Turn 0

I don’t care for the Oasis much in this start, but at least we have some hills near by. Anyhow, I decided to move my scout north, and spotted another cow plot near by, so I decided to move my settle 2 tiles North to get 2 cows. Now I know there is a risk I’m settling onto another future resource here, but it seems the best way to go about the start for now.

Well, we ended up meeting only Joao this turnset. And in the not too far off lands there is stone somewhere, I will try and beat the other deities to it, or at least eventually take it over with culture.

Turn 10-20
Spoiler :
f_turn20m_a9f596b.jpg

After being very careful with our scout, and popping a bunch of huts, we finally get a tech. It’s a good one at least, so I don’t mind.

Turn 20-30
Spoiler :
f_turn30m_204fc09.jpg

Unfortunately, we lost our scout at the beginning of this set. But he did his job well while it lasted.

Turn 30-40
Spoiler :
f_turn40m_ef6fcf5.jpg

Well, our two workers were hard at work, and now we’ve paid off with our first wonder of the game. Our power should only go up from here :P

Unfortunately we got hit by a ******** TERMITE-EVENT at the end.
Turn 40-50
Spoiler :
f_turn50m_fabcc5a.jpg

And here we found, Mable City. I felt very sickened after discovering there was a patch so close, right in the perfect spot. I would have settled right on top of it if I could. Unfortunately I will never be able to get it hooked up in time to use it for oracle. And I’ll probably lose Oracle race now too, just watch. Oh well, that’s how it rolls in the deity lane.

Turn 50-60
Spoiler :
f_turn60m_4fc2495.jpg

Phew… turns out I was wrong. She came in for us, and after some debate I decided to grab Monarchy so I could trade it around with Joao.

Oh.. And we took that +2 health random botany event. Hmm, don’t we already have +2h with Bismarck anyway? Oh well, the more the merrier. Unfortunately our Capital will be a little crippled for the moment.

Turn 60-70

Spoiler :
f_turn70m_b90b449.jpg

We met Churchill and Ramesses, and did some more tech trades around. These idiots are… idiotic enough to give me stuff for hooking up my deadly resources. Hmmm! They are just giving those wonders away, I tell you…. Even Rammy who is always so protective over them.

Anyhow, here goes city #3. So, if I go cultural here, these are going to be my three main cities. (I think!)

Turn 70-80
Spoiler :
f_turn80m_081a3dd.jpg

We pop a g-spy.

We also meet Sitting bull, one of my favourite warmongering leaders.

But most importantly, here comes in our new Toy…. ToA.

Turn 80-90

Spoiler :
f_turn90m_579fd91.jpg

Ugghhhh. I’m really getting peaved now. I’ve been moving a settler from one decent spot to another, all over the place and every FREIEKEN time just as I’m about to settle, some God damn barb city spawns up right in front of me at the worst time.

I pretty much had it up to my neck with this so I’m resorting to a new tactic. Build a group of city-crackers and fix it the old-school way.

Turn 90-100
Spoiler :
f_turn100m_ba1e6a3.jpg

Ok, a hell of a lot of stuff happened here.

I captured not one, but two barb cities.

I also popped a great priest.

I also met Cyrus and Sury, which are at war.

But best of all….

In comes the Parthenon…

And with Literature 2 turns away, I’ll let you guess what is going on the que next.

P.S. I have S. Paya being worked on in my second city…

I decided to take another stab at cultural pretty early, though to be honest I was thinking on backing out and romping over Joao at the end of the Parth because I felt so dominant at the time. But since I already did a bit of both defensive and offensive warmongering earlier in this series I decided what the hell, lets ride this one out peacefully because I have done so few cultural vics before.

you really done so FEW culture vic before ? :D
but good job spaming wonder on Diety. I enjoy your series

National Epic? The GL will polute the Artist gene pool but is good for bulbs to Liberalism. Is there a good way to deal with that after it is no longer useful?

Very interesting read even though I can't even think about playing deity.

Could I bother you to tell us what are the mods you use in your game? I mean I see quite a few bits of information on your screenshots that seem like you use mods for. Every interesting especially the ones that tell you what someone is willing to trade and when a city grows in size. :D

Bah, one can't wonderspam like that on deity... If it wasn't Obsolete himself I would suspect cheating.

Should just be the BUG (BTS Unaltered Gameplay) mod.

He may use BAT, which is BUG + a collection of graphic mods to make the game look better.

Use the artists for golden ages. Maybe get the corporation eventually with one.

Though Obsolete is prolly going towards Cultural victory so he'll need em.

I didn't bulb anything. I used my scientist for academies which give both a whopping 50% boost, and a 4c per turn. However, because I wasn't using rep for so long(if t all), and since the 4c doesn't even double after 1K years, it may be mathematically correct to have gone after a quicker lib path. The problem is, near the middle I realize things were not going the way I wanted, which really devalued the use of my academies. But it's still hard to say, I'd have to run the numbers on it.

Not having an academy later can cost you around 16 cpt, not to mention the lost c earlier. And then there are other factors, like teching later on, as well as finding out you missed out on flipping a city earlier because you were just a tiny bit too short, etc. But if you can get to lib fast enough, to carry over the difference.... It's all hard to say because so many factors contribute.

I saw you had The Pyramids in queue in one screenshot. Are you still thinking about building them?

No I mean the scientist points from the Great Library can prevent you from getting artists. But the great scientists are helpful to bulb towards Liberalism. After that, you dont need great scientists and you want great artists to settle and to bomb. How do you deal with the G Library after Liberalism?

I forgot to mention, I was trying to also build SoZ earlier in the capital. However, because I wasn't paying close enough attention to my capital as I should have, the blasted game decided to work an unimproved 2F tile, instead of a hill. So then I ended up missing out on Zeus near the end!!!

@#$%#@%!#$@%$%

NEVER trust the game to have any competance in anything. That cost me, but at least I did get a little bit of gold to keep burning off the beakers on my way to music.

I'll never make that mistake again (famouse last words).
