Most on the pictures on the internet are bitmaps, and I can't post them. How come everyone else can?

they show up as bmps on my comp :(

Are you copying them and pasting them into Paint?

As Perfection said, most are jpegs and gifs. BMPs have a horrible compression standard and don't work as well for that matter.

I have a system since I realized the forum won't use .bmps:

PRNT-SCRN in game.
Paste in Paint. Save as .bmp.
Open in Photoshop/Gimp. Save as .jpg.

Gimp is free BTW.

I guess you're using MS Internet Explorer, because it has a problem with file types sometimes.
Try emptying your browser cache and see if that clears things up. You can do it from "tools>internet options" menu in IE. (if that's what it's called on your computer ;) )

Yeah, my Internet browser (Explorer) always forces me to save pictures as bitmaps, even though they're usually not originally bitmaps. This is a pain in the neck, but I'm too lazy to do anything about it. :D

Do bitmaps even compress? I've always thought that they're like wavs, which aren't compressed. I mean, they're like 2MB, and the same file in PNG would be around 200kb or so.

You can get BMPs in a compressed format, but only in 256 colours. The subformat is called RLE encoded, which I often use for windows wallpapers.
