Black Screen after intro videos

For those of you (like me) with the steam install who had trouble getting the preferences dialog to show up: You MUST cmd + double click on the original Civ 5 app and not on the shortcut app that Steam makes. It's in ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/sid meier's civilization v/. You CANNOT cmd + double click on the app "~/Applications/Sid Meier's Civizilation V"

Editing the GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini file isn't necessary if you use the Civ 5 Preferences dialog (cmd + double click); the preferences editor is in fact setting up GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini.

Just a guess, FSresID is probably the ID of the display mode, which probably changes when your display setup changes (unplug an external monitor, etc), hopefully they fix up these bugs soon!

Like one of the other users, command-double click isn't working for me, even when selecting the actual app and not just a shortcut. Tried editing the GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini file as per other suggestions, but it didn't have an effect.

Just wanted to put that out there in case there are others trying the same thing, having no success, and wondering whether they are goofing something up. If somebody out there manages to find another possible solution, please post it! Otherwise, I guess those of us who can't fix our Civ V's with the above solutions will just have to wait for a patch.

Command-double-click on the app worked for me. I am disappointed that the only choices of window sizes align with screen resolution choices. It should be infinitely variable. I like it just smaller than my screen, allowing room for the task and menu bar. I have to go to the next smallest size, which leaves a lot of screen unused.

It is possible to use non-standard window sizes, via use of the aforementioned .ini file and possibly some other voodoo. I couldn't get it to stick initially, but am now using 2200x1400 — not sure which combination of acts made it possible!

EDIT: Sorry, I'm in 2048x1536, which I think was set from the boot-up dialog box shown above.

Have any of the people having problems contacted Aspyr Support?

Have any of the people having problems contacted Aspyr Support?

They posted a new note for the MBP's with 9600 cards

If you are having issues launching the game on MacBook Pros with the 9400/9600, try throwing out the saved game file and the p.list file:

Saves:Macintosh HD/johnDoe/Documents/Aspyr/Sid Meiers Civilization 5
Plist:Macintosh HD/johnDoe/Library/Preferences/com.aspyr.Civ5.plist

I didn't try it since I got mine to work, maybe it'll help some of you guys though!

Any ideas what to do if you're on the newest MBP (with the 330 M), and don't even see the opening movie at all?

Edit: Nevermind - I just noticed that the 330M isn't on the supported card list, so evidently Civ5 won't work on the 2010 MBP's.

I never would have expected that - very very odd strategy.

All I can say is it runs on my MBP 13" with 330M. It takes a while to start up, and I don't think the intro movie displayed, but it did come up with the main menu eventually, and it played a default game start OK. Since I normally switch off intro movies as soon as I can, the lack of the movie didn't upset me.

Have you tried the solution quoted above - trash the ~//Library/Preferences/com.aspyr.Civ5.plist file?

Yep, still doesn't work. Launches, have a black screen, a bit of sound, and an unresponsive system. No keys do anything. cmd-opt-esc gives a low-res screen for a moment, then drops me back to the OS.

Hi guys, first post here. I'm having several of the same problems mentioned above. I have a 2010 MBP 15" with the 330M. I too have the logos/intro which play audio but no video... but if I just let it sit for a minute the menu appears and everything is fine.

"Fine" as in more-or-less functional, that is. The game itself suffers from what I'd call serious performance issues, even running at lowest settings (except for fog of war, which I found so hideous at minimum setting that I bumped it up a notch). The single-player game I played (tiny map, 4 players) was only playably fun until about 1000AD, at which point there were enough cities and units that playback was very, very choppy and unresponsive to the point that it ceased being at all enjoyable.

Are people finding solutions to these basic performance issues? It would be nice if I could see the intros and such, but I'd happily live without that if the game itself just played smoothly!

I still have the problem with the yellow strips on the sides and no menu. Any solution? I have tried every resolution.

This is the response I got.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Aspyr Technical Support!

Unfortunately your ATI Radeon X1900 video card is not a supported video card to play Civilization V, the only ATI Radeon video card series altogether that is supported is the ATI Radeon HD. Below I will post the system requirements for Civilization V so you can get a better view at what you will need in order to play the game.

Any new solutions to the black screen with yellow bars? I have the same problem.

Funny though, the "torrent" version that runs on wine works fine except for occasional crashes during turns. Which lead me to buy it, which lead me to "Its not supported".

so there is no solution to this problem?

does anyone have any idea how many people are dealing with this?

Hi, welcome :wavey:

If you are referring to the problem with the ATI Radeon X1900 video card, Mumster has already posted Aspyr's response above. I would guess there will be no solution unless they relent and work out a way to make it work.

Anyone with the problem should probably contact Aspyr to let them know the extent of it. There's no way for us, here, to know the number of people who have it, as only a small fraction of the customers even find this place, and we have no inside track to Aspyr.

I have a Toshiba Satelite laptop with an intel core i3, has windows 7, downloaded CivBE, then the screen went black after the intro with nothing but a mouse pointer. Deleted the game, will redownload the game, and will work on any solutions anyone advises me to.
