Blackened Skies

Great update! Mods, could we get a list of who's at war with who? Saves us the trouble of digging through the thread.

To United States and Portugal

The Republic asks-nay-demands the immediate return of our troops from the Portuguese army's illegal skirmish against our sovereign nation.

The Spanish Republic has always been proud with its neutral stance to international politics, and fears that it may be forced to reconsider this stance if further hostilities against our nation does not cease.

OOC: Why is Sichuan STILL Zhao?

The United States reminds Spain that it has nothing to do with that most unfortunate incident, which saw Spanish troops inadvertently cross the Portuguese frontier. Our Ambassador in Lisbon has nevertheless raised the matter at the highest levels of the Portuguese Government and has indicated that it is the earnest desire of President Wayne that the Portuguese Government ought to repatriate the errant Spanish soldiery as soon as practical in the interest of peace and good will among nations.

A Declaration from the office of Prime Minister Tom Black

As if the German administration could not be offensive enough, they prove yet again their utter lack of morality and decency. The days of the Industrial Revolution are behind us, and the employment of children and women in squalid factories is utterly repugnant. If the German administration deems it necessary to draft the women and children of their society to fight a war, perhaps such a war is not worth fighting. We condemn the actions of the German regime, and we call on all sensible nations to do likewise.

The Tsar's actions in Persia are deplorable, and their threats to the Persian government is extortion, plain and simple. If the Tsar treats his citizens the way he treats neighbouring states, then perhaps the growing independence movements on his western border have some justification for their actions. We condemn the Russian government's heavy handed attempts at manipulating regional politics, and we hope that the belligerents in the Foreign Office are removed immediately, and that the Tsar appoints sane individuals to take their place.

OOC: My naval attack on Greece was not important enough to be mentioned, right ? Not forgotten ?
But really great update and awesome FMA refernces. *I got the Elric brothers, nothing can beat me*
Another question, Italy invented the Carrier, but we are not able to build more of them ? Since my naval power is only average.

I hope this is not too soon for this

From : Italy
To: France

Italy hereby offers White Peace to France. retreat your troops behind your border and agree to an 3-years cease fire. We will in return retreat our troops from you colonial terretory and stop shelling your port cities. Germany is our enemy, not France.

*Message send to the french public via spies and letters throughn out of bombers, together with the peace offer.*

"People of France. Stop this war. You are getting wasted by your maniac leaders, in a war you don't want or have to fight. Italy never had any ill will towards, it was your goverment who attacked, to support the unrightfull war waged by Germany. You don't have to fight in this war, no italian soldier will shoot at you if you just turn around and leave Italy.
Some of you may be angry for Marseille and Toulon, but now imagine how angry and sad the People of Italy are, for the destruction caused in their homes.
There will be no winner in this war, all that will be left afterwards are broken and destroyed nations, this doesn't have to happen. It's up to you.
Signed by the Italian King."

That's a great idea. I'll arrange for this to happen as soon as I myself make a thorough audit of the global diplomatic situation.

Hopping on as Free Poland.

*squeal!*

OOC: My naval attack on Greece was not important enough to be mentioned, right ? Not forgotten ?

Not forgotten, but it couldn't be arranged in the same time-frame as defending Albania, attacking Toulon/Marseilles, and conducting regular patrols, so I made an executive decision and deferred it. Consider it a misappropriation of priorities by flawed generals.

Another question, Italy invented the Carrier, but we are not able to build more of them ? Since my naval power is only average.

Ah! That is a mistake. Italy's Naval Power should be Strong. I'll fix it.

Your white peace offer is in character as well.

Everyone: I've been informed there may be a bug in one of the algorithms I use for recruitment in the update process, to the effect that some of you who bought units on another nation's Base Cost may not have gotten anything. I'll be fixing these cases tomorrow, but if you see anything else that looks wonky please file a report with me pronto.

From the Office of the President of the Republic

The Republic is dismayed at Russia's saber rattling in the Middle East, and wants Russia to confirm that it will abide by the treaty of St. Petersurg and abstain from further activity in East Asia.

In solidarity with the Persian people, the Han Republic is open to Persian requests for assistance in equipping its troops and restoring whatever infrastructure was damaged in the brief war.

We would also like to call for a second Summit of Non-Western Nations, to meet in Shanghai, in the spirit of the Persian initiative in 1933.

For the record, I'm not allied with Italy. I'm simply prosecuting a blockade against France, Germany and Brazil. If that helps Italy that's hardly my intention.

OOC: Want to be allied Masada ^^
But yay, got a naval and Air tech advantage, since neither Germany nor france can build carriers or heavy bombers, buja.

THE RED STANDARD
The Year in Movies (2)

For the second installment of our series on this year's best and worst, most and least successful, most interesting movies of the year, we will be reviewing the spring openings. Of course this means that we move on from Red Dragon and start with the already quasi-mythical The Smoke that Trickles from Kwangtung, as well as the martial arts crowd-pleaser that quickly outdid it.

March:

The Red Dragon surprised everyone by outclassing its competition and staying strong even through March and into the first week of April. Ticket sales waned by March, however, opening space for promising films to prove failures or to experience unexpected success. One of these was The Smoke that Trickles from Kwangtung. With little to no previous filmmaking experience, Zhang Wu delivered an unprecedented cinematographic experience. Opening in the anniversary of the First Opium War and marketed as a historical war epic, the film successfully appealed to both wuxia and war film devotees. Its sales plummeted quickly, but a steady stream of cinemagoers has kept it in cinemas for almost nine months now.

Its plot revolves around a Canton man who looks for a woman whom he feels he has a relationship with after meeting him, apparently by dumb luck, on a regular basis. He looks for her as the Opium War rages on by the background. He succumbs or evades the obstacles in his way rather than face them and defeat them, and when he finally finds her in Nanking, he kills her husband, a mid-level honest official who is completely defenseless. After she rebukes and loathes him for the murder, he kills her and leaves for Canton again, as another official accounts for the double murder as the unfortunate outcome of small-scale riots after the treaty.

The movie was mostly filmed on location near Canton, around the Yang-Tse and in Beishi. Initially financing the film through a minor studio, the movie quickly ran over budget (Zhang Wu claiming that there was no budget to begin with), which the director paid from his own pocket. Heir to a substantial Hong Kong fortune but with his ancestral home in Hangzhou, Zhang Wu personally hired most of the crew and services. The studio abandoned the project as filming in Canton was wrapping up. One of the concerns was Zhang Wu's insistence to film in chronological order, which means that over half of the film was produced independently. Without his personal wealth, it is undoubted that this movie would have never been completed.

Troubled production aside, the movie was a complete shock to audiences because of its subversion of genre conventions. The nameless protagonist is never given a story. We are only showed a flowering connection to this woman in the fleeting moments that they share or almost share. He seems to somehow fit on a wuxia template, but the differences are so enormous it would be unimaginable. Instead of tackling the obstacles, he evades or surrenders to them. War is firmly present throughout the film, and yet the protagonist always avoids it. Even as it clearly steers him, he keeps away from it. Zhang Wu makes a point of taunting us as the protagonist joins the mob that will defeat the British, only for him to break off into the village in search for his woman. Then he is drafted into battle, but he bribes an officer and continues his journey upriver as gunfire can be heard. The lone hero story is also frequently undermined as he surrenders, is defeated or escapes by random chance the obstacles on his way. Most potent, however, is the climax. The double murder of two helpless innocents, one of whom he is supposedly in love with!

It is the selective and extremely subversive application of violence that draws attention to this movie. While some audiences were disgusted by this ending or alienated by the numerous previous subversions of both genres, many have been captivated by its brutally humiliating story. Many others still have been hypnotized by its images. Revolutionizing cinematography, Zhang Wu has incorporated new shots never seen before, including shooting directly into the sun numerous times throughout the film. As the year ends, they have already been incorporated into the language of cinema by other filmmakers both in China and abroad. The movie itself has seen much success in Japan and has even reached some cinemas in America and the British Dominions.

Yet for all its technical and narrative trickery, the core of the movie is undoubtedly Chan Yazhu. His cryptic but enthralling performance is what pins the audience to their seats. From the subtlest expression of happiness to the implacable visage of fury, his talent has made him a very sought-after lead, with six movies to be released next year and two already released that have earned him some praise again. He said of Zhang Wu that "To work with him is a unique experience" and that he is looking forward to collaborate with him again.

Fortunately the movie is said to have recouped all the overcosts of production during its lengthy run, perhaps even earning a small gain for its director, writer and producer. Unfortunately, the film hasn't been well received by some people who see the film's themes as an indictment of a policy of war "that this government has been cornered into by its neighbours' pressures or direct assaults," said Secretary for Munitions General Da Shu. It is to be seen if Zhang Wu's career will be cut short and his filmography reduced to this undeniable masterpiece.

April:

This month finally found a competitor to The Red Dragon. Although it opened in very few cinemas, its popularity allowed it to get a wide release, and The Sacred Fists quickly became a landmark of the wuxia genre. Filmed by a team of students in a corner of Beishi not magnificent enough for larger productions, it started as their efforts to capture a companion's amazing kung fu feats. As one of them remarked how the student in question could be the star of his own wuxia movie, a story was quickly developed and produced at almost no cost by the students themselves. With a very plain cinematography but an agile editing, an excuse of a plot and Li Long's sheer presence and kung fu prowess, the film is both a thrill and little more than a showcase for Li.

Li Long is supposedly a chastised disciple from a kung fu school who is finally expelled for his unorthodoxy. Soon afterwards, in the aftermath of an uprising, the Imperial government decrees that martial arts are a state secret and all schools must accept Imperial tutelage or perish. Refusing to stoop so low, the school and the surrounding town, where Li's family lives, are subsequently burnt in the middle of the night before the term to surrender expires. Embittered, Li (coincidentally the character's name) receives one last lesson of the elder and now agonising leader of the school, who dies in Li's house. Li then sets out to defeat the commander who burned the school, going through his army of armed men in the process.

The burning sets were models of Beishi buildings that architecture students wanted destroyed, and everything else was shot in location in abandoned houses, vacant temples, parks and solitary corners of Beishi, with fellow students as extras or goons and a local kung fu practitioner as the evil commander. Costumes were the largest expense, loaned from a proper production that had already wrapped up.

It is believed to be the most commercially successful movie of China, and very possibly of the world, with revenue estimates at about thirty times as high as the production cost. This spells a good omen for Li Long and the Shao brothers, who scripted, directed, and produced the whole thing.

Mr President, Mr Speaker, members of the 76th Senate:

I speak tonight for brave men who served this government faithfully and were cruelly murdered for it.

At times history and fate meet in a single time or place to shape a turning point in history. So it was half a century ago in New York. So it was last week at Fort Hull. There your soldiers were murdered in cold blood.

I heard this morning that Governor Hamill is celebrating -- indeed he has led toasts celebrating what happened at Fort Hull. I was distraught because I had hoped that a peaceful resolution might still be sought. I have been cured of that delusion.

We have come to live in a time of great crisis. Our lives have been marked with debate about great issues – issues of peace and war, issues of prosperity and depression, issues of socialism or capitalism. Rarely are we met with an issue so straight forward.

The evil of disunion.

Our brave soldiers have been murdered in coldest blood. Governor Hamill has celebrated this fact. This must be condemned and will be punished.

But this is not the only reason we fight. We must also fight to liberate the millions of your fellow Americans in Tidewater -- indeed a silent majority -- who wish to remain Americans. For the cries of pain and hymns of these oppressed Americans demand a response.

Our justice shall be swift and when it is done it shall bring to the righteous and terror to evildoers.
