Blockading-Do you do it?

Sure I use blockading in the expansion phase.

I block settlers an if possible I try to completely box the AI with my lands in the expansion phase by not signing a RoP.

Well, if not to prevent a settler from settling, I'll at least run them around for a few turns with a warrior or two. Gives me a few more turns to expand and/or take that spot. Helped a lot in the last diety GOTM.

I use every possible blockade. Naval and land. Land blockades used:
  • frontier blockade, fun but very expensive
  • city blockades, to starve and uprise cities
  • narrow land strip blockades, very cost effective (mostly by building a city there)
  • settler blockade, obviously

Settler blockades usually as

S U
U U
D
where S is Settler, U is unit, D is Destination for Settler. You can pobably predict where that AI settler is going to, so you can make them run around in circles even when they are well protected. This you can do with even the cheapest units like scouts. Just make sure you trade with AI to make sure they won't get annoyed. I get good results using this strat.

Anyone use something similar or anything different?

Sorry I think this poll is a bit too broad. I voted YES because I blockade in lots of different situations but then again I don't in others which often get described as ripe for a blockade:

I DO BLOCKADE: Choke points (sea and land), with my units to slow or stop troops/settlers down (as described by cnt_dooku) in fact this gets done throughout the game in all sorts of situations, by building my empire to block others into continental corners (and don't sign RoPs).

I also 'blockade' with other civ's troops/empire. By bringing one civ into an alliance against another when they lie between me and an enemy on the same continent, blockading can be achieved. Eg. continental layout is: Me - Zulu - Chinese. The Zulu empire stretches across the continent forming a natural blockade between me and China. In this scenario the Chinese declare war from far away and your scout / curragh spots a big stack of doom coming your way through Zulu lands. I DEFINITELY get the Zulus into a war against the Chinese as this blocks the Chinese troops from reaching my lands. The new Zulu ally does a kind of blockade for you.

BUT I DON'T't carry out naval blockades of city ports. This IMHO is too expensive for the effect it acheives and a civ will usually have another harbour city somewhere else which makes the naval blockade pointless. In fact I can't think of any situation when a naval blockade has been appropriate. If they are in a situation which means they only have one port bringing in resources then they are most likely on their last legs anyway.

What is Blockading? Not sure but I guess I made some in Civ 2 since it was easier. And by then there wasn't any own territory, just your city tiles.

I blocked off my territory so no one could pass through (keeping another civ alive) since I had an RoP with the 3rd civ that was trying to destroy them.

They had to sail around, which was excruciatingly ineffective. Imagine that!!

I blockade only if a civ keeps trespassing my territory and repeatedly does it even after I shoot them off.

I also blockade if there is a chokepoint consisting of three squares or less, just for fun. :p I normally let the AI walk all over me so that they can eradicate each other. ;)

i dont normally blockade. i was thinking, if i have the statue of zeus wonder, should i use the ancient calvary to surround my land, i dont normaly blockade.

I never use naval blockades. On land, sometimes. For example, if I'm between a strong and a weak civ who are at war I sometimes throw a cordon around the weak civ to protect it from land invasion by its' stronger enemies. ( I can then build up an army to wipe out the weakling, ensuring all the spoils go to me).

Alternatively, I sometimes allow invasion armies from warring states to pass into my territory. I use my units to funnel their armies into jungle or flood plains and then surround them, hoping they will die off. At the very least they will be an unusable drain on resources.

P.S. How exactly do naval blockades work? Is it sufficient to occupy only coast tiles adjacent to harbours, or must I occupy all coast squares adjacent to city radius?
Can I implement a privateer blockade?.

even the AI blockades. They are well aware when they find a 1 tile bridge between land masses and they fortify on it. Really screwed me one game :D
