i just need to do the story-part of the update.

UPDATE XLII
1526 AD
*Note*, because of the historical importance of the decade of 1520, the nes updates will elapse 2 years instead of 10 until it is 1530.

THE AMERICAS
Hernan Cortez continues to advance, now closer to the capital and its royal vaults, the place where much of the treasury is being kept. The Aztec Emperor has called in much of his army to the capital, numbers alone have halted the spanish advance, but thanks to some native aid the struggle is long from over. the Totonacs, tired of the aztec oppresion have given considerable aid to the conquistadors. Spanish Re-inforcements arrived from the north but were told by cortez to remain in the territory taken a week earlier to secure a supply route.

In the south the Greeks also continue to see much success, facing a much small enemy than Cortez, they attempt to gain the territorys of the south.

EUROPA
In the North-sea, the now protestant nation of Sweeden moved its fleet south to aid the british, but they were meet w/ the catholic brandenburg fleet, both took heavy casualties and retired, however neither was lucky as both were trapped in a storm that left only 7 survivors.

STANDOFF AT THE STRAIT OF DOVER
The franco-Spanish fleet linked up n the bay of biscay and continued to advance north. The English Main Fleet headed south to halt their advance, they succeded for no side has begun to fire. But yet again neither side knows that a large naval battle between protestants and catholics was being fought in the Jutlands.......nor the bavarian invasion of Brandenburg.

THE INVASION OF BRANDENBURG
France has sent a large force towards northern germany, and are currently crossing thorugh Bavarian territory, however it is the Bavarians who have sent an even larger force against brandenburg. Berlin itself is in possibility of falling, the protestants in Brandenburg have spent much of their treasury to increase their army in reaction to the invasion. In the East Brandenburg sent a counter-attack towards the once held territory of Poland.

RUSSIA
In Russia a new leadership has taken power, they have begun to encourage expansion to the east and have claimed neutrality to the confilct in northern germany.

COLONISATION
Much of the american coasts have been colonised, adventurers are now headed to africa, some have already gone past the cape of good hope and the tip of south america.

NORTH AFRICA:
In Ethiopia the muslim missionarys have been executed by the government, this has infuriated the sultanage of the ottomans.

THE INCA:
The Mamlukes have stablished a small link of communication w/ the greatest nation of south america.

Spanish Story *secret*

In Mexico…

“Death to the Aztec Infidels!”

“For Gold, God and Glory!”

Outnumbered 5 to 1, the conquistadors of Spain fight on…. Numbers can defeat his Majesty in faraway Madrid fears for the worst, for technology

“This will not last long! Either my soldiers will slaughter the Aztecs, or the Aztecs will slaughter my soldiers! What we need is more troops! We MUST capture the Aztec capitol and destroy ALL their pagan artifacts!”

“Father, calm down, we cannot fight 2 wars at the same time, our fleets in the Strait of Dover is staring eye-to-eye with the British Home Fleet. Our 10 squadrons, France’s 8 squadrons, and Bavaria’s 15 Squadrons on the other side of the Channel verses 23 English squadrons, in other words father, 33 squadrons verses 23 squadrons. We have an advantage, but the English may spend their entire treasury on their fleets…”

“Henry, my boy, u are too logical and believe in statistics too much, the British will spend some money to defend their colonies in America and Africa! Even if they spent all their money, their navy would only equal ours!”

“Father, you didn’t count the facts that the English are in their home waters as well, we must give the English pressure EVERYWHERE! In the Americas, Africa, and the Continent, spread out their forces even more!”

“I AM KING! Not you yet Henry, when you are King, you may do as you wish…we will have a GRAND naval battle against Britain, that is final”

“Your wish is my command father…”

Crown Prince Henry leaves, and King Ferdinand retires to bed… Church bells rings in the morning… King Ferdinand, after 36 years of reigning, and at the age of 68, dies…

“Long Live King Ferdinand, deceased King of Spain!”

“My subjects, since the unfortunate death of my brilliant father, and ur benevolent King, I am now King of Spain. However, technically, this is not official, until I journey to the Vatican and be crowned by the Pope. I will therefore, journey to Rome, and be crowned by the Pope!”

In Palace of King Henry…

“Richelieu, my beloved father is dead…. I must take the reigns of a nation at war in America, and on the brink of war in Europe… What must I do after the coronation?”

“Simple, invite an representative from EVERY single nation in Europe to attend the coronation, aside from the Protestants, even the Muslims, and in front of them all, you will be crowned King of Spain in all the pomp and splendor!”

“Richelieu, that gets us no where, pomp and splendor I already posses, but what about Herman Cortez? Will he accept me as his new king?”

“It does not matter, YOU are KING OF SPAIN, and if he is loyal to Spain he will be loyal to ANY king of Spain!”

“You ease my heart…May God have mercy on the Aztec Pagans, British, Swedish and German Heretics…For I shall not!”

In Bavaria....

"Empress Helen, the Spanish Diplomat in Russia informed Crown Prince Henry that the Russians may send aid to the Brandenburg Protestants, he urges you to be on ur utmost caution...."

[OOC: If I recall correctly, the Incans were not the big blood-letters that the Aztecs were...]

Story:

Day 3: We made contact with the natives today. They were eager to meet us, and indeed were quite friendly. They call themselves "Inca", so we assume that is their tribal name. They have led us to a nearby village, which is on par with most early colonies for the most part. Tommorow, they said they shall lead us to one of their cities.

Day 7: I have not had time to write down what I have seen these past days, but it is a great and magnificent empire of natives! They appear civilized in all ways, and they even worship a single god -- MUCH more than can be said of other natives, even if it is not Allah they worship. They have built grand cities, and they farm the mountains themselves with techniques we have never dreamed of. These Incans have built a vast road, efficient road system, and they seem to travel as far by foot in a day than most people in the Empire ride by horse in a week! Tomorrow, we will be led to the capital to meet their ruler...

Day 8: The capital of the Inca Empire, Cuzco, is of incredible architecture! It is incredible, on par with our own! We met the ruler, their High Priest. He is a strong, wise man and seems very capable of ruling these people. We remained friendly, even complimenting him on his impressive empire, and were gifted with much gold. These people, they are primitive, yet not so. Their culture is not like the rumored culture of the Aztecs, who sacrificed their civilians like crazy to many false gods. They are truly worthy of our respect...

Diplomacy:

To: The Incas
From: The Mamluke Empire

Our explorers speak well of you and your empire. They say you are much more advanced in all ways than the primitives around you, and that you are worthy of our respect. Our beliefs differ, but even there we see you as far superior to those around you, for we too worship a single God. Despite our differences, we see great potential within your civilization. As such, we offer you knowledge of great weapons with which to vanquish your enemies [gunpowder and gun-construction], stronger armor to defend yourselves with [iron working], and our protection from other Imperial powers who may seek to destroy you for a measily 30 PP to us and the chance to send a few missionaries -- no more than 20 at one time -- into your empire.

Orders:

1) Increase the single African Colony on the coast of the Atlantic into a city and produce two Naval Squadrons there. [18 PP]

2) If the Incans agree to the trade, send over supplies and experts to the New Phoenician colony on the narrow strip of Central American land WITH protection from the two Naval Squadrons. From there, they will likely be able to make it to Incan territory without protect.

3) Upgrade New Tyre, the first colony in New Phoenicia, to a city. [10 PP]

4) Produce two army division in New Tyre after that. [6 PP]

5) Issue two colonist charters to the two claimed areas of land. [14 PP]

6) Issue one land explorer in South America and one in Africa [the African explorer is to search the Atlantic coast]. [10 PP]

7) Finish sending the 5 Naval Squadrons with the five Army Divisions to New Phoenicia. Spread them amongst the colonies without military precense. After that is done, send four Naval Squadrons back to Carthago Novo and leave one to patrol the waters around New Phoenicia.

Incans:
to Mamlukes:
This is a great proposal of yours !, despite the fact that i had to put the major priests under arrest folllowing their protests, we accept.
We are sending 15 PPs in gold and other goods this turn. Perhaps this is the beggining of a great friendship.
the other 15 PPs will be sent once we gather the gold for transport (next turn)

The Czar was an old man, and frail at that. His days were apparently numbered. However, his health was not constant; one day he could suddenly be deathly ill, with a priest standing over him ready to give the last rites, and yet make a sudden recovery before the week ended, fully capable of carrying out his duties. He could live for several more years, or he could be dead before the next harvest. Either way his son, Crown Prince Ivan, the Prince of Moscow, would become the next ruler of the Russian people.

The Czar was aware of his declining health. He knew that his life was in God's hands and had already written out his final testament. (There was no need for a will--everyone knew who would get everything once the Czar died.) He had also called his son to St. Petersburg, away from his Moscovian estates, to have what might be his final conversation with him.

****

"My son, I believe you are well aware of why I called for you."

"Yes, Father." In fact, the whole country was probably aware. Very rarely do a Czar and his son have a face-to-face talk with one another when the latter becomes fit to assume his role as a prince, unless there is great need to do so.

The Czar's tone was soft, like when Ivan had been a young boy, and unlike his usual, cold, gruff voice that he used when speaking about matters of state. "Ivan, you will soon inherit my title and lands. In your hands will be the lives of many, and the ability to extinguish them. You will wield the power to do anything you want--but with that power comes responsibility, and you will need to use good judgement in excercising it. Do you think you can do that?"

There was a short pause. "Yes, Father."

"Are you certain? I will understand if you do not wish to be Czar; 'Heavy is the head that wears the crown.' Should you wish to refuse my burden, you may do so, and the right of inheritance will go to your--"

Prince Ivan, impatient, interrupted, "Father, I am certain! There is no need to tell me this!"

"Calm down, my boy," the Czar admonished, managing to do so while retaining his soft, fatherly tone. Then he continued. "Indeed, if your mind is made up, there is no need for me to speak of that. But there are a great many things I wish to speak of that are much more important. Listen carefully.

"My son, Russia is a great and ancient land. I will not go into detail; you know the history, and time would not permit it anyway. As I was saying, in this land, greatness lies all around us; it simply needs to be awakened, to be stirred from its sleep that we may tap it and use it. For centuries, Russia itself has slept, happy with what it has, content to let others grow and sit back and watch. But need we be spectators forever? We have slumbered long enough; now we must awaken and reach for our destiny!

"The stories tell of great nations in the East; I believe they are true. I also believe that ther is great wealth. I am not talking about wealth in gold, although that certainly may be the case. No, I speak of a greater kind of wealth: the untamed wilderness, open for us to explore and settle; land for us to grow and tame; resources, such as copper and iron, that we may build industries; and even an abundance of fur-bearing animals!"

This last one made Ivan think that his father was going mad. Although he kept his words to himself, the feeling was still conveyed by his widened eyes.

"No, no, no, what I am saying has reason behind it. Here in Russia, we take furs for granted. They are quite commonplace, even what you might call inexpensive. The forests abound with creatures that are hunted for fur. However, I have heard one of my courtiers tell of the time when he overheard a conversation between a European--French, I believe, or was it English...?--Anyway, he told me that he heard that in Europe, such things are luxuries! The man paid several rubles for a fur robe that no Russian noble would have been caught dead in, that was supposedly of only mediocre quality, worth only a few kopecks!

"Anyway, my son, always think about the East! Do not waver in your path to tame it! It is Russia's destiny to rule an empire stretching from the Baltic to whatever sea may lay beyond our borders!"

****

After this conversation, Crown Prince Ivan stayed at the Winter Palace with his father for another two days before returning to Moscow. Meanwhile, the Czar's condition steadily grew worse. Perhaps God had only kept him alive so that he could properly instruct his son. Meanwhile, the people's alarm grew once again, as it seemed their ruler's life was once again in the balance. However, it remained to be seen which way it would tip.

From: Russia
To: Brandenburg Protestants

We'll see what we can do. We must consider other factors along with these. A proper response should come soon.

From: Russia
To: rest of Orthodox Commonwealth (Greece, Byzantines)

We are considering giving direct aid to the Protestants of Brandenburg. If, during the course of such a conflict, we should be attacked by the Catholic Poles, will you intervene against them from the south while we defend ourselves?

To Russia
From Spain
Anyone giving direct aid to the Protestants can consider themselves at war with Spain!

From: Russia
To: Spain

We only said we were considering it. We have taken no official action as yet.

To Russia
From Spain
Well, we're trying to dissuade you from trying....

From: Russia
To: Spain

And what interest do you take in a nation that is closer to us than to you?

@Specialist290, Brandenburg and Russia was never great friends....

To Russia
From Spain
Well....its probably because my allies are fighting IN Brandenburg.....

OOC: I know that, but this is a NES, and things might have been different. In RL, Martin Luther lived and was able to prevent such a large-scale war (temporarily), the Byzantine Empire fell, and the Greeks and Mamelukes never colonized America...

From: Russia

And at whose urging are they fighting? You Westerners need to learn to keep your religious heads in their proper place. If our Metropolitan in Moscow stood up to the Czar, or his superior in Constantinople tried to boss around the Emperor of the Byzantines, the same way that your Pope and bishops do to you, they would be out on the streets in an instant! In Russia (and indeed the entire Orthodox world), the religious authorities stick to their preaching and studying of the Holy Writ and keep their clean noses out of politics. The Byzantine Emperors do not need to be chosen by the Patriarch, unlike your "Holy Roman Emperors." The state is not a tool of the church, nor vice-versa; both are mutually exclusive of the other.
